One of my treasured possessions is a photograph of myself on my trike in front of of my late fathers Mark 2 Jaguar. This model inspired me so much that in 1966 I announced that I would one day own my own example. My parents laughed and said that by the time I grew up all Jaguar Mark 2 models would be scrapped. How wrong they were and in the late 1990’s up until 2001 I owned a 3.8 litre example. They are the best looking saloon car in the world IMHO.
There is a Polaroid photograph of me aged about nine or ten in my go-kart alongside my Dad's Mk. IV Zodiac. I'd like to have my own Mk. IV one day.
I had a Skyline V35, which I loved. The same idea as the Mark II, but objectively better in every respect (as it should have been, that much later). But in no way has it extinguished my feelings about the Jaguar, and I fear I could still do something foolish one day. Possibly the best looking car of any kind, ever.
I did a stint in a classic car restoration garage, mostly MG's (still have PTSD from rebuilding those). The best moments were working on a MKII Jaaaag, in metallic navy and cream interior. I loved that car and still do. Used to stay after hours just to spend more time buffing the paint, cleaning parts and just admiring every single inch of it. They are a lovable, non pretentious tour de force of engineering and style - my 'some day' car.
I really think you should publicly appreciate Miss HubNut's work even more, Ian, as she's really doing a cracking job making the unit roomier, in the process granting you access to all kinds of things you might not even remember being there (like feeler gauges). I do hope her work isn't rendered useless in a couple of weeks ...😉
Oh we'll do a proper celebration when we get the Pajero Jnr in and all respect with be forthcoming.
Elly is so happy , she runs lovely! Well done Ian ! When I hear the sound of a 2cv it brings back so many memories and even the smell of my first car ,a Acadiane! Wonderful ! Carly you’re so brave, digging in that giant pile of parts , boxes and who knows what !? 👍🏻👍🏻🆙
Elly's looking superb , you must know 2CV's inside and out !
Good old Elly getting some love. Well Done Miss Hubnut with the tidying.
I do enjoy 2CV tinkering, they are from a time when tinkering with cars could be attempted on a driveway on a Sunday afternoon by someone with basic mechanical knowledge.
Great video as always❤.
Old fashioned car maintenance, very rewarding unlike modern engines hey Mr HubNut.
Keep the engine alive by changing the oil every year, even if you haven't racked up the miles. Good job Ian.
With good quality oil.
It's always good to see Elle being worked on. This time general engine maintenance was interesting. Back in the day I read that 2CV's could be awkward to work on but with the front bodywork removed it looks a lot easier. Many thanks for sharing.
Love the tinkering videos Ian
Thank you. I’ve been away from my 2CV for 8 months and we get reunited next week. Can’t wait to show her the NOS Marchal gas cap I bought her.
Great little tinkering video Ian, Elly sounds so sweet.
I had a little scrape on the plastic moulding on the bottom of my driver's door, decided to fix it myself now I have a big scratch on my door 😂. Enjoyed the video as always thank you.
I love seeing Myrtle getting all glossed up, I'm officially envious of you owning this car. You should drive her more.
Just finished this same job this weekend. I blame you for this as your video's made me buy one. :) Most fun I've had with cars in years. Also if I don't have an empty oil bottle handy I change the oil and filter then add in 1 bottle of oil I then cut the side out of that bottle and use that to catch the oil from the valve covers. Also has a built in pour spout.
2CV FTW. Love it since i first rode in one as a child
Love watching these little bits... Thank god you have Miss HubNut organising things!
Best of luck with all the unit tidy up there great progress 👍👍👍
Absolutely brilliant video Ian miss hubnut ❤👍 Job well done Ian there still a fantastic car brilliant
I NEEDED a hubnut Shot. Thank you. Its been that kinda day
That's a good tip, using the spanner to show the exaggerated movement.
Great to see and hear Elly again! My own Dolly the 2CV is promised back to me in a couple of weeks now after over a year away having work done. I can't wait to drive her again!
Ha🔧back to tinkering 🤗bliss sun shining who could want for more .oil change most overlooked maintenance job Well ITS GOT OIL I N IT. 😮 😂 Good to see both of you in garage.👍🍄🐞🌹🌳
Sounds very sweet Ian
Take the jag stuff with you for rustival and give it to the heritage trust
Now that was interesting a small service on Elly especially setting the tappets Now that's something l have never seen before especially on a flat twin engine
Always used to adjust tappets so that there was some drag on them where some people would insist that the gap would be too tight using that method. That was way back on Ford Crossflows, Mini's, 1100 Austin's etc.
Not done tappets for many a year or much mechanicing at all.
Swapped an auto gearbox in a Rover 2600 TC with the car just up on ramps many years back finishing the job on Xmas eve for a friend of my Dad's only for him to tell me and my friend that he had no money. Had hair full of hypoid, ATF Fluid and other detritus from his rural driveway. 2 days hard graft for nothing. Needless to say - not the best Xmas ever.
Another year, we both welded crashbars onto 3 wagon trailers on Xmas Eve and that business owner, well he bounced a cheque on us. Steadfastly refused to work on anything on Xmas Eve from those points onwards. Got the money in the end, but not when we needed it.
Always tell my friends and anyone who will listen to change their oil, filter, plugs, etc once a year at least irrespective of mileage. Usually do-able yourself for around £60 on most cars which is around a £1 a week over the year so stupid not to.
For the first time in probably thirty years I'm going to do an oil change on the Yaris - wish me luck... apropos valve clearances: I still can't get over the fact that you adjusted the valve clearances on some 1960s Vauxhalls with the engine running!! How on Earth you did that - or what you adjusted for - is beyond me.
My old Lotus Cortina had shims which made the clearances a pain to do . I wish I still had that car though. Thanks for sharing.
Long ago, I had a device that made setting valve cleaances an absolute doddle. I think it was called an SPQR.
Ooo i need some of them storage crates 🎉
Hello Ian, I use some old microwave plastic meal trays to catch the oil from the tappet covers
Another top tip from Ken is a 1L oil bottle with a slot cut in it under the rocker cover catches the oil saves cleaning the mess off the chassis and then pours easily into your waste oil bottle with the cap removed.
Yeah, unfortunately, we'd had a tidy up and throw them all away!
@@HubNut 🤣🤣🤣
It's a good sounding engine that 👌🏻
Speaking of 2CVs I saw 2 racing 2CVs at Cambridge services, being transported.
This video reminds me my car needs a oil change.
Rome wasn't built in a day. Nor was the HubNut garage clean up! Blimey, Ms HubNut has been busy.
Nice video!
Nice 😊
Owatrol is awesome, I got it on Chops recommendation. It has transformed my front door. It also works on faded car plastic.
Nice to see Elly getting some love and also Miss HubNuts progress with the tidying up, must be almost time for a skip 😁
I've seen Chops garage use that Owatrol to great effect. Seems to be really good stuff and I'm thinking of getting some myself.
I wonder if over tightening is why VW Bugs uses a spring clip to hold the covers on?
Top tip. Even with corroded and cleaned feeler gauges or ones of unknown quality., measure with a micrometer or calipers. Disregard what they say they are and go with the measuring instrument tells you.
Glad I don’t have to adjust valves on mine, hydraulic tappets, brilliant invention. Although I’ve been replacing drop links and general servicing on my old Lancer. So nice when you can feel the difference .
Pendine sands childhood memories ian
The 'Gold' feeler blade is actually Brass and is for checking and adjusting points, not valves.
Give boiled linseed oil a try for wathered plastics. It doesn't last forever, but it's pretty good for the price.
I'm glad to see your driveshaft is as mucky looking as mine. I need to change some gaiters.
The middle gaiter leaks a fair bit. It's entirely normal. One end is open, so it can slide on the driveshaft.
I have everything in my garage to do an oil change on my Citroën C1. The only thing I have to do is to do it... (no pressure, everything is fine, the oil is still clear and there is enough of it in the magic three cylinder power plant). Take care, everyone! See you soon --- Martin
T-handled screwdrivers are useful for this task. Easy to see if it has moved.
Having owned Simca's etc from the Talbot era I know all about tappety engines 😂
They ARE noisy things aren't they😮👀😜🎇? .
I liked the Volvo shop's opinion on my B engined SAAB 99's tappety bucket over shims. "Well they have a tolerance of over 0.005" larger than the specified clearance, that's entirely normal."
Ooh wonky camera angle tinkering. Missed those videos!
looks like your tracking is toeing in mate :-)
Ian, you should polish the Deux Chevaux! Especially these front fenders look far to mat! Do it with a machine and make it shine! 😊
It's satin paint. They were painted to match the roof that was fitted at the time.
@@HubNut But the rear fenders are shining... 🤔
Yay tinkering time
peanut/groundnut oil works great on plastic trims, and costs a couple of quid.
I often ponder why Citroen stuck with the little 2cv speedo rather than the larger "fan" one. 🙂
Charleston and Club had the larger Speedo until the end. Little one was for the 'poverty' models.
Just another day in Hub-Land😅. I've been going through some oil changes myself with my gang. Not as much tidying going on as it should at my place 😮........
Donate the Jag stuff to the Coventry motor museum? Chops Garage swears by Owatrol.
Should take the Smart to the beach races, most sand dune vehicles are rear engine, rear wheel drives.
Sadly the race vehicles have to be pre-1949 American.
hubnut, you should employ the kids, to archive the jaguar stuff. and put it on line?
4:55 Could be the angle of the camera, it looks like your tracking is off slightly. As the tyre is wearing more on the outside.
trackings out on tyres
11:03 loose white connector behind the switchgear
It's the parking switch for the wipers. They won't park so I've disconnected the switch.
Is there a loose connection on the choke lightbulb? Just seemed to be flickering a lot on camera, kind of like how a neon bulb looks when seen on a video, before the engine started up, and of course brightened up as the revs came up, just seemed to be a bit odd to me... :S
Over the years I frequently see 2CVs in full summer heat, well 23/4c with their winter radiator muffs on. I once tried to tell someone that was a bad idea but they got very shirty. Strange people no doubt going to reap what they sow.
Always worrying. That said, it does take a very long time to get the oil temp up, even on warmer days. For most shorter journeys, it probably wouldn't matter. Throw in a few hills or traffic jams and things will definitely get hot...
1:50 Why not donate it to a motoring museum!
Maybe give the Jaguar box to the Jaguar Heritage trust
That Jaguar archive of negs and stuff could be quite valuable both historically and financially, look after it. Do the valve clearances have to be set hot or cold with those figures?
Thanks. Cold.
Let’s see tinkering on Mytel and Chemmy
Doesnt the Charade, drink the boiled dinosaur juice fast enough, that its a continuous replenishment?
thanks for the explanation on how to adjust the valves. 0.25 front and 0.20 rear? Is that always the case or only with standard chillinders or Bigborn chillinders?
Standard or big bore.
Oh I don't think i'd want to take a 2CV on Pendine Sands - it's too near the sea and Sea + 2CV (or other old cars) = rust.
another great video has always Ian and Carly miss/mrs hubnut and hublets and hubmutt 👍
When was the transcript time line of the " oil change "
I probably should check the valves on my 2CV soon. I have a set of feeler gauges somewhere, but I have never done this... I know if the valves are too tight you risk burning the valves, is there a technical downside to valves being slightly too loose apart from sounding a bit tappier and maybe losing a fraction of a horsepower? Do the clearances tend to get tigher or looser over time?
I don't think loose tappets cause a massive issue on 2CVs other than noise. Not great for the valve gear I guess.
Is Ella still rocking the loaner engine or has she got her own again ? , hoping i havnt somehow missed the rebuild of her engine
Warming the oil is a waste of time, just leave it dribbling for ages as most of the bad stuff will be in the bottom of the sump 🤔👍🇮🇪
AY UP MR AND MRS HUBNUT
What the benefit of less fan blades? Less drag on the engine or something to do with inducted air? 🤔
Fewer blades use up less engine power. Means reduced airflow, but those in the know reckon that's not an issue in the UK.
@HubNut Got it. Is the same trick used in the Dyane? I seem to remember mentions of the fan on them being different to a 2CV & does a a very basic, minor job of turbocharging
Would have been interesting to see what oil was used?
Just cheapy 15w40.
Hi Ian on a separate note when doing test drives with ms hubnut please let her talk more about what she thinks of the vehicle it is so annoying when people have someone with them but pretend they are on their own
Not a good idea lobbing off fan blades willy-nilly.
It will throw the thing out of balance. Yes, they are balanced.
As for power difference:
That fan will PULL fresh air into the engine bay and cooling cowling.
Yes, that takes some power when the engine is idling or pootleing along in a trafic jam.
But as soon as the car is at speed the speed of the car actually feeds the fan and basically takes over (ram-air). IMO this negates the parasitic loss of the fan.
Pete's a multiple 2CV racing champion. I think he knows what he's doing. 😉 He knows how to get the best out of a 2CV engine.
Hubnut becomes an Oil Baron. Oops thats Oil Barren sorry...
hello
Does the engine tell you the valve clearances?
It does not.
Thought valve clearance was done so that it isn't tickety (boo).
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
What oil did you use on Elly
Some el-cheapo 15w40.
Tesco were doing 15% off their own brand recently
Worth checking out
How are you so unorganised?
It's a special skill.
