Veteru No, The swimming against a current was what I said was to avoid bumping into things. I didn't say anything about why they swim while they sleep.
Depends where you live and what your nightly room temperature is. If its -30C outside, keeping nice warm +23 or above is quite costly so often nighttime temp can drop down to 18C.
I could listen to you talk all day. Side note on the octopus: another good reason to stop all testing and feeding on them ,they are far too intelligent to be a food source or testing subject... at least in my opinion.
well, if animals only knew that intelligence is a factor in that decision they wouldn't be as hasty! (this contradicts my previous opinion, but that's okay as soon as i say something smart and funny to draw attention to myself. Kind of like this thing in the brackets. Am i typing to myself again? what is wrong with me? Well, i know that i am going to delete key before posting this comment). PSYCH (do people really use this word?)
I had a tarantula and I'm pretty sure she slept too in a way. She would spend most of her day just standing still so it was hard to notice. Whenever I had to do maintenance to the enclosure, add water or feed her, she wouldn't react to the movements or vibrations as if she knew I was there. Some other times, she would instantly freak out as if she was unaware of my presence. Very interesting.
The human sleeping pattern is perhaps the most peculiar of them all, as the mammal will often close its eyes for hours on end and still not fall asleep.
The sleep requirements are probably why certain species don't last in captivity (great white sharks for example) while others actually gain a lifespan advantage by getting better sleep habits.
Funny how I developed some kind of weird sleeping habit when I had a long distance relationship. I usually talk to my girl at midnight while one of my eyes are closed and one is opened while laying at the bed and I honestly felt like I somewhat slept almost every time after we talk.
Add solders - in army I was taught to sleep while standing, on duty, walking or at any situation. As it is said: solder is sleeping, service is passing.
Even though I know what sleep is, it still gives me horror story vibes hearing about groups of animals all going "motionless and unresponsive" for 30 minutes at a time.
two cuttlefish in a conversation: "hey fred, how was your sleep?" fred: "dude, it was weird... i had a dream that i was a neon sign!" other cuttlefish: ..."uh... what's a neon sign?"
Giraffes, frigate birds, and dolphins all have peculiar sleeping adaptations. We got a Pokémon for each of them in Gen 9 (Farigiraf, Palafin, and Kilowattrel). Coincidence? Yeah probably. But it's certainly an interesting one
Probably the noise it makes when they are rubbed against itself / box. Just like chalkboard video (from SciShow), the noise has a frequency that we don't particularly like to hear. I.E.: High freq
People have texture issues for different items. For instance, I have a texture issue with paper. If my hand is wet and I touch paper, I grit my teeth and get goosebumps. Just thinking about it makes me uncomfortable!

0:56 REM sleep, the deepest kind of sleep? Why do I keep hearing this? Isn't this totally wrong? As I remember, REM = Rapid Eye Movement, which is something that happens when an animal is dreaming, which is the lightest kind of sleep you can have (your brain activity is at its maximum, and you will wake up with more ease then). I just checked a couple of sources and they seem to corroborate this, not what's said in the video. Please enlighten me.
Might this suggest that something like REM is inevitable, since it showed up via the evolution of two totally different lineages? Then is it possible that other independent evolutions are inevitable? In which case, could life possibly have evolved in multiple places at different times (not necessarily locally, in the Terran sense), as an inevitability? Perhaps then life is inevitable given the right conditions, yeah?
Dolphins & Ducks: Now with Dual-Core Processors xD
I wonder if they change personality after they switch brain. Each half has their own conscious.
But they still don't have the mighty BLAAAAST PROCESSING!!!
I prefer the cuttlefish, they got RGB lighting ^^
What kind of soundcard are bats running?
but they are both asleep and awake, so wouldn't they be quantom processors?
Some sharks also swim while they sleep, but prefer to find an underwater current so they can swim in place.
Probably to avoid bumping into things.
You watch shark week, don't you
The Anonymous Anomilacarus I actually don't have cable/TV
Actually, Sharks usually sleep-swim to avoid sinking. If a Shark stops swimming, it will sink. I hope I was helpful :)
Veteru No, The swimming against a current was what I said was to avoid bumping into things.
I didn't say anything about why they swim while they sleep.
Square Squid Studios Well, I just told you then
"Accidentally bumped a whale"
**poke it bruh, see if its dead**
They just put "accidentally" in their lab report.
Dead whales are apparently capable of exploding so that probably won't be a good idea lol.
It's amazing how every living being looks adorable when sleeping. Loved the Giraffe most of all. So cute!
not as cute as you ;)
+maxtomious perv
sandy Liao Complimenting someone makes me a perv... nice logic
Have you ever seen a lamprey?
+maxtomious Would have been better if you said " You also look cute when you're sleeping" . missed opportunity 0/10 .You should be ashamed
4:00 So sea creatures spawning vertically in No Man's Sky wasn't a bug, they were just sleeping
I use to switch half of My brain to sleep mode too when I was in school.

Doesn't the Brain rest after Sleep Deprivating Period for 72 hours even if you are consciouslly awake
i find that the animal with the strangest sleeping habit is the college student
Oh. My gosh. Cuttlefish flashing during REM sleep might just be the cutest thing I've ever heard of.
Procrastinating going to sleep, by watching a video about sleep.
i hav no ideaea why i just lookd thiz up.
Me too.
Same
ME

I would love to be able to do uni-hemispheric sleeping, especially during class.
maybe those vertical whales were trying to communicate with an alien space probe
Aaaah, I see you also watched the movie.
Well good, because Vygr gets lonely.
Transparent aluminium!
How do we know he didn't invent it?
Hello....Computer.
One of these days, an octopus is going to come strolling up a beach, with its army of isopods in tow, and declare itself King of Earth.
Lance Manion i would live for that
Homefaring
That was the greatest little Scfi story ever! Homefaring -Robert Silverberg.
Then someone would make calamari out of it.
Can we plx make a whole video for the sleeping while flying thing??? Like.... HOW??? That's so cool
Number 9
People who wear socks to bed
Only half the time!
number 10
people who wake up with their bare feet cold or outside of the blanket.
+Radiant P3guin That's a _good_ thing to me. I'm usually too hot when I sleep, so if part of my body isn't covered it helps keep me cool.
Shots fired, Repeat *SHOTS FIRED!*

Michael, you do such a good job hosting these videos! This was really interesting!
I'd love to hear more about octopuses! always found them so interesting
Giraffes are my spirit animal now
Also that bit on octopus sleep was fascinating 😮
"Giraffes sleep very little..."
Oh wow, very interesting! How little?
"...needing just 5 hours per day."
...um.
Apparently I'm a giraffe?
Horses sleep around only an hour a day
I could listen to you talk all day.
Side note on the octopus: another good reason to stop all testing and feeding on them ,they are far too intelligent to be a food source or testing subject... at least in my opinion.
nothing is ever too intelligent to be a food source or testing subject
Well judging off this comment thread, cannibalism is ok. Now to hunt heh heh heh
Most of this comment section gives me a better understanding of why some animals eat their young!
well, if animals only knew that intelligence is a factor in that decision they wouldn't be as hasty! PSYCH (do people really use this word?)
I rest my case.
I love this channel!! This video was sooooo interesting! Thank you guys for doing all you do, one of my favorite channels
I both hate and love the overused comments that are left on these videos.
but why are there overused comments around my anus?
We're the Giraffes boiled for safety! Wait... Wrong channel
Lmao..You're all the worse
Still do
=)
There's something kind of eerie about the sleeping sperm whales.
They're like giant floating pillars leading the way to an unseen temple.
As I was watching this my skin started flashing and changing colour. It must be time for bed. Goodnight all.
I think Jake and Nog played a prank on you 🖖😀 ua-cam.com/video/6xKHBOrkNlA/v-deo.html
Does going to bed at 4 and waking up at noon count as a odd sleeping habit?
It's different from the norm but isn't necessarily bad.
How do you even manage that? I go to bed at 4 and I'm out until 2 or 3
SDD525 maybe they do, but work nights. You don't know their life!
@@raney150 Exactly! That's actually my normal sleep schedule for work.
@@raney150 I work till 6 am sleep till noon-1 lol. I love when I get up and people call me lazy its like.... what do you expect me to do? Sleepwork?
I once dreamt when I was awoke, and then I awoke to a dream, just to go back to being awake while still sleeping.
wtf
Inception?
lol
Tits and ass
+Man from Nantucket it felt something like that.
I love this guy, he's so cute and speaks so pleasantly :)
2:30 Well that might explain birds flying into planes.
Can you do one on cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture when I was 19 and would love to learn more!
I'm so glad I can comfortably sleep in my bed whenever I'm tired ^_^
What did the bird say when he forgot his glasses?
Aw, frigate.
Great episode! Top notch! Fascinating and detailed, and you even gave examples of questions science hasn't answered yet! 10 out of 10!
I stay up to 1 *looks at clock* 2 in the morning watchinf nerdy science videos that I love, then sleep until like... 12
can scishow please also use imperial measurements like they used to where they would say 3000 km or 1864 miles.
This host speaks very well!
Aww that picture of the giraffe sleeping is the cutest thing ever

I love this guy's voice and the way he talks so fucking much. I just want him to softly speak random sleep facts into my ear.
Sleep is something you do before you have kids
Your wife is someone you do and then you have kids.
Kids is something you do before you have kids

I love watching my puppy sleep, because occasionally he laps at a invisible water bowl or leg kicks like he's chasing. Also snores, reaaaaally loud.

I also have a weird sleeping habit: listening to SciShow!
Uni-hemispheric sleeping! I need a whole episode on that!
Funny how I developed some kind of weird sleeping habit when I had a long distance relationship. I usually talk to my girl at midnight while one of my eyes are closed and one is opened while laying at the bed and I honestly felt like I somewhat slept almost every time after we talk.
You guys make me love science even more!
Wow, dolphins have it hard. Conscious breathing and also need to go to the surface every few minutes.
Add solders - in army I was taught to sleep while standing, on duty, walking or at any situation. As it is said: solder is sleeping, service is passing.
It'd be great if I could use Uni-hemispheric sleep
I knew about the sleeping standing up and the uni-hemispheric sleep, but these other ones are new to me. Neat.
Really love this show, so informative.
Even though I know what sleep is, it still gives me horror story vibes hearing about groups of animals all going "motionless and unresponsive" for 30 minutes at a time.
i've fallen asleep while swimming once - it felt like lucid dreaming
i wonder what octopuses dream about.

I just showed this video to my daughter because she loves watching animals sleep.
Her response: Does that guy blink?
Me: Hahaha rarely
Why is the comment section so weird these days?

I am thankful for Sci Show.
That duck fact made me laugh.

Remarkable and fascinating! Thank you, SciShow, for answering questions I’ve had for years, and some that have never occurred to me! 😉🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️💥

What'd be hilarious was if suddenly the guy started yawning at the end and said "oh god I need sleep" and walked away or whatnot.

imagine being such a parasite to a specific type of fish that it evolves a whole separate trait that basically says "screw you specifically" to you
Some marine mammals, e.g. seals, practice units hemispheric sleep while at sea but bi-hemisperic sleep when on land.

Omg, I just got a Gary Johnson ad before this video, I didn't know him before, but know I want him as president
the vertical sleeping whale, I don't know why but I think that would make for an epic movie scene
