The woman is a credit to herself and I wish he had felt less defensive and heard her reply in full because she deserved to give it. Serious conversations are great when they happen organically. Just love her and would love to hear more off her.
Super proud of this young woman nailing the misogyny double-standard issue - and then we see a classic example of it - dude cutting her off & talking over the top of her to protect his ego & take back control. Go, Jamie-Lee, you're a star. Guts guts guts all the way.
I love Ms. O'Donnell's portrayal of Michelle and even more than that, I love how she addressed the host's question. regarding her age! Can't wait to see her future projects!
Great interview! But I have never once wondered about Jamie-Lee's age. I thought that was a weird question. It is indeed an industry misogynistic question. I don't think they realize it and it was wonderful that Jamie-Lee's pointed it out. Good for her!
To be fair she didn't call him mysogynistic she said the question was. I felt he didn't let her explain her point. He talked over her and shut her down. She was smiling though it and took it very well. If you look at the body language he's leaning over towards her a bit aggressively, trying to shut her up. He used to be a better interviewer. I have to say in my opinion it was very much like Ryan thought, I don't like what you said so let's move on. Nevermind Ryan might have touched on a subject that Jamie Lee might have wanted to express why she finds it so annoying.
By the way, leaning forward can mean the person is trying to show they are very interested in what your saying. You people will find weird things in everything just to be offended
Hearing the controversy I thought she was going to be rude but ffs everyone she was laughing and being friendly and just trying to explain herself. Tubs interrupted her so many times so she couldn't explain her reasoning
She literally called him a misogynist on his show on live tv which could ruin him publicly when all he was doing was asking an innocent question. It’s insane how feminism haS poisoned modern women’s minds
@@adolfryan1930 ah yeah Ryan Tubridy would have his public image ruined after one interview. The original comment wasn't even that bad but she said the comment was misogynistic and when she tried to explain herself he kept interrupting her which made it way worse
Unfortunately, many people miss the context of what she is saying, primarily because Ryan cut her off. Male actors are seen as silver foxes and employable at a ripe age. They enjoy playing characters significantly younger and this goes without anyone raising an eyebrow because society sees male ageing as acceptable, if not admirable. Esteemed female actors have often commented that they are deemed unemployable when they reach the age of 35 because of the bias towards female aging and being seen as 'over the hill' and no longer attractive to a male gaze. That's why we see so many male actors coupled on-screen with female wives, girlfriends (etc) half their age. There are just a few female actors that are lucky to be still considered employable after 40. Many female actors are forced to write, produce and direct their own productions to stay employed. Reese Witherspoon talks about this at length and why she was inspired to start her own successful production company, with female leads. With that said, I find it interesting that so many men feel that they are in a position to lecture on misogyny. This is an experience that they have never experienced and will never experience. As a white person I would never have the audacity to lecture a black person on racism. Women are over being told by men what they should think and ordered to 'get back in your box'. Women are out of the box and they ain't going back in.
@@demongroovemusic Indeed, we've applauded men for having inflated egos for hundreds of years. Many of them govern our countries (badly). About time we finally equal things out.
@@booker4629 Sorry, I didn't realise I'd commented to such a silly person. Two wrongs make a right according to you (and most modern feminists). Do you realise how cringe you are?
She definitely has an inflated ego, but also, in general, women prefer older men and men prefer younger women. Therefore the idea that women over the age of 35 are no longer seen as attractive to the male gaze is true. And its biology that determines that. Not society.
@@MrSchwood It could also be argued that men have a biological urge to rape, kill, pillage, possess what is not theirs and create war. We have unique brain structure as human beings, our old primitive (limbic) brain and new evolved brains (cortex). The new brain allows us to conceptualise complex ideas, forward plan, problem solve, understand things from the other person perspectives (empathy) and adapt and adjust accordingly to changes in our environment. It also regulates the primitive brain from urges that may be fatal or destructive for us and allows us to live in an equal and civilised society. An example being the contrast between Putin and Zelenskyy. One is very much led by his primitive (emotional) brain and the other by new brain compromise and logic. Women no longer accept the danger, destruction and inequalities of a society led my primitive male urges. The difficulty here being that it doesn’t benefit most men for women to be treated as equals so the urge to repress continues. This is not to stereotype, as some men are very evolved as human beings and secure within themselves and as such, wish to develop an equal and fair society for their mothers, sisters, nieces and children. Unfortunately, we have a lot of men who act from their primitive brain and this has no place in modern civilised society.

Ugh, I just can't stand him especially after all the scandal he has been involved in as of late.
@@IrishEagIe mainly because no one asks how old a guy is? when an adult male actor is playing a teen, you don't see interviewers ask them how old they are
@@fintonmainz7845 there's literally not a single incorrect thing she said in her answer (or non-answer). There is too much focus placed on actresses as they age. That is based in misogyny. The reason people are focused on the older actresses in derry girls playing teenagers is because that kind of casting is unheard of. Women turn 30 and start getting offered mother roles to actors not five years younger than them. I'm not saying the question was rooted in misogyny, but I'm glad she took the opportunity to address this instead.
I think he panicked because in today's cancel culture the mere whiff of being called "misogynistic" can turn into a career crisis. Understandable reaction imo.

Clearly she labelled him a misogynist in a typical passive aggressive feminist way. “I’m not really saying your a misogynist but really you are Ryan “ . You lack empathy for men otherwise you would understand why she is wrong and this isn’t an innocent argument
Regardless of whether her comment was 'justified' in your eyes. The way he dealt with it was immature and rude putting his hand in her face. Let her speak her peace she was making a joke out of it
Nah I disagree strongly with this. She made a claim he was misogynistic. Which in today’s world can mean cancelling. He was rightfully angry she labels him as a misogynist when he did absolutely nothing wrong. The lads in Africa and Asia laughing at this. Misogyny? Give it a rest. She doesn’t know how lucky she has it to live in Ireland as a woman
Jamie Lee is amazingly talented but also very intelligent and so grounded too. She handled that question in such an honest yet very polite way, she was highlighting something people may not always be aware of about the misogynistic nature of being an actress and some difficulties women may face. I think Jamie Lee was so courteous and polite so fair play to her! I also sincerely believe the interviewer meant no harm, but it seemed like upon reflection he realised he might have gone too far so he tried to deviate the conversation elsewhere. I think he first should have listened to Jamie Lee’s full response before moving on just to acknowledge her full opinion but perhaps he was just doing what he thought was best by moving on. Sometimes people have delayed responses to things and can take time to register that something they’ve said might’ve gone too far and don’t always find the best solution. I think if he asked something like “What was it like to play a teenager in the 90s?”, it would be more centred around the acting/characterisation/setting as opposed to the individual’s actual age which is not really relevant to anything in this context. I think if the question was posed differently and not about a person’s actual age then it would’ve been totally appropriate. I think what Jamie Lee was getting at here is that in society, for example a more mature man is celebrated (black and pepper hair etc) whereas a woman is often compelled to always look a certain way. Acting gigs should fit the person and their talents as opposed to anything else. I just wanna say as a side comment, Jamie Lee is beautiful! I don’t think there was ill intent and I believe they both were just having an open conversation. The host was pleasant and seemed engaged but he overstepped then kinda acknowledged that. They then proceeded to have a chilled conversation. I think a lesson from this is not to ask someone’s age in a context like this (obviously in certain situations like in relationships it’s vital to know someone’s age which is why I’m saying this) as it’s irrelevant to someone’s ability to portray characters. Many shows (even American films and TV shows) have actors who are playing teenagers who aren’t teenagers in real life. Jamie Lee was incredible as Michelle Mallon. She was class in Derry Girls! The focus should be on how wonderful her acting and work has been instead of personal things about her. She handled that awkward question with such grace and had the courage to speak on something she felt strongly about. Even when she was cut off she was so respectful, very commendable. She’s a really down-to-earth girl, so lovely! Jamie Lee is also smashing it in her new acting endeavours. I think Jamie Lee is brilliantly talented and intelligent.

I get both sides of the argument here about the age question, but he could’ve just researched her age beforehand and complimented her acting without asking the question, and instead simply saying she’s great at playing a 16 year old when she’s not one in real life. Maybe she’s been asked it too many times but I don’t think he did it to push any buttons! It was definitely innocent but could’ve been handled differently. @@JohnJohn-rg1wkI’d say that’s a weak argument: the point of an interview is to ask questions which reveal something new and interesting-not something that can be answered by a quick google search. The point still stands that he could have just as easily complimented her ability to play a teenager while not being one herself, without asking her for her age.
It's not, but sadly it's a reality in the entertainment industry (and most other industries really..) that older professionals can be disqualified or sidelined due to their age, even if they are a better fit for the part/job. Ryan is more than likely aware of this and he should have considered that asking her to state her age on live tv could cost her work. It's not right but it is a reality until people's attitudes change within the public and the industry.

The answer is obvious, through a very quick Google search (which he or his team should have done as part of the research process). The question however is not obvious… It is very common to cast older in these types of projects. He could have worded that a number of ways that wouldn’t have caused awkwardness. “I understand you’re 30 playing a teenager, that’s cool, do you have any similarities to the character when you were her age?. “How do you find playing a teenager? Does it remind you of your school days in Derry?”. “It’s great to see a young local woman being cast, was it weird going back to school again?”. “Playing a teenager again must be fun, how does it compare to your days as a teenage Derry girl?”. A mixture of an overreaction, crossed wires and not to great journalism. Should have been edited tbh just awkward for them both

@@MaryAnn-pd3pm ah yes. Very famous actor needs the Late Late show for promotion

It was an obvious question to ask considering she plays a school kid

I agree with the general sentiment in the comments, however in acting and similar roles age can knock you out for parts,. People who audition tend to go in blind, if the interviewer thinks you are 18 when you are 30 then you will match that role accordingly. If you publicly state your age it can remove you from certain roles out of general bias. There are a lot of hate makers working in society who will attack general insecurities
Can you hide your age from your employer If they request it? I know I don't have that privalege. It's probably already available online in most cases, when you're talking about the ages of famous actors in the public eye.
@@OnTheEdge86 not really sure, but I'm a mature student in college and I was told by my mentor not to put my age on my CV to avoid ageism when applying for internships ... so if that's acceptable then I guess the rule is that they don't have to know. Age old misogynistic question, asked of female actors since the dawn of the movie / TV industry. Lots of women and men play the parts of younger or older characters. Derry Girls is hardly unique in that actors older are a different age to the characters they play. Stupid question. She handled it very well. He, on the other hand, petulantly cut her off when she tried to explain why his question was offensive. I think he was trying to be clever, and thought he had a “good excuse” to ask a question that female actors never like to be asked. It backfired.

It’s not misogynistic to stop someone from talking, it’s simply rude but context is key here. Her age isn't the point mate. Being asked about it constantly by clowns is.
Unfortunately, many people miss the context of what she is saying. That's why we see so many male actors coupled with female wives, girlfriends (etc) half their age.
