The Ruger GP-100 revolver was named as such because the number "100" in its model name signifies its robustness and strength. The "GP" stands for "General Purpose," indicating its versatility and suitability for a wide range of applications. Ruger wanted to emphasize that the GP-100 was designed to be a rugged and durable firearm capable of handling a variety of ammunition loads. The choice of "100" in the model name was meant to convey a sense of strength and power, suggesting that the revolver could withstand heavy use and recoil. The number "100" is not meant to represent a specific feature or characteristic of the firearm, but rather serves as a marketing designation to highlight its overall durability and reliability.
It is commonly believed that the "GP" stands for "General Purpose", but that is incorrect. The GP actually stands for "Government Procurement" as the revolver was initially intended to be sold to various governmental agencies such as the Border Patrol. With semi-autos taking off in popularity in the '80s and '90s, large sales of the GP 100 to governmental agencies never took off.
This Ruger is awesome. People choose it for a few reasons. Either they don't like Smith or can't afford one. The Smith 686 is nothing to sneeze at. I like Ruger as a company. I like Smith also.

We feel the same! The 686 is the standard, but the GP100 is a close match!
Can't afford one? They're literally $50 apart. The Colt Python is another matter.
The GP100 is so underrated. Just my opinion.
We agree, but want to hear your thoughts! Why do you feel it’s underrated?
Why do you drop the gun down everytime you shoot?
You mean when we first take aim? If so, IDK, but it feels really cool with a revolver.
I think Noah learned that in Romania.
love mine
