@@John_SilviHere’s a tip, always eat more than you usual eat before a deadlift day. It is literally the MOST taxing exercise. That surplus of calories pre workout will help you break through.
Deficit, paused deadlift. i.e. a 3" pause from a 3" deficit. This makes your brace and strength bulletproof in the start position, forcing you to be hyper-efficient through the lift. It took me from 200kg to 300kg in about 2 years.
I don’t think that’s the key for me, already fucking bottomed out at the start position, and tbh feels harder from a 14 inch I love to smash it from below the feet, deficits are actually harder than floor as far as weight goes but feels easier as tension is better
Man, seeing those 5 plate RDLs is something else. I see people pulling double my PR or doing it for reps all the time, but something about never even unloading it is nasty 😅
As a Master's competitor ( 57), the holy grail for my deadlift was doing all my lifts stood on a 1 1/2" bumper plate. Right up to 3-4 weeks out from competition, then i switch to the floor. I'd plateaued for years round 250kg , but doing deficits got me up to 265kg in less than a year.
As a lifter that accidentally spent 2 years pulling from a 2 inch deficit I can attest that it changes everything when you switch to standard height. I thought I was plateaued but as soon as I got it to standard height weights that would've been a heavy single or double turned into multiple sets of 6 weight.
@joerapo yeah. I made homemade concrete plates to fit my 1 inch set I've been using for years and thought I made them to the same size as Olympic plates but it turns out I hadn't. I've got some oly plates now so the heights standardized and it made a world of difference. Immediately went from 495 being a heavy double to pulling 515 for 3×6 at rpe 8.
Same. The rec center I use has these metal plates that are shorter. I've been there for years. As soon as I went to another gym it's like an instant 20 lbs more with their bumper plates.
This couldnt be at a better time . I just got back in my groove after a bout of ego lifting / not warming up enough put me out of "peak deadlift form" for about 6 months.
I think one exercise that I have slept on is single leg RDLs. When I started doing them I definitely noticed a drastic weakness in my left side and my gluteus medius was sore for the first time. I’m going to keep pushing them
i cleared 315 as a start after only doing a few months of deadlifts but the big thing about deadlifts is that most guys who can put out big numbers are usually super jacked. Big arms, big forearms and built quads. And training for a big back. What I found is stiff leg, trap bar, deficit lifts, RDL's, unracks, squat, and OHP all can improve your deadlift capability. And core workouts. You need a solid core in order to pull off highweight PR's or risk snapping your back. Lol
After struggling in the mid 600s for years, really concentrating on barbell rows moved my deadlift into the 700s. Right after my deadlift exercise, rows from mid shin with a little english, doing sets of 5, adding weight each set until I couldn't get 5 or I thought I had a little too much english. Straps, no belt. After being stuck at 660ish for 5 years I got 671 and just missed 689 in about 8 months. Another 6 months after that I got 700 and 716 at a meet. Now I tell anybody who will listen about it.
I have two excercises that are not deadlift variagtions. Barbell rows, no pendley, but kind of a RDL deadlift hybrid. Like cailer woolam demonstrated. And the back extension "deadlift" that pete rubish advocated, using a barbell really makes it require glute drive.
I like this rack pull strategy. I'm a short-armed deadlifter too and the legs off the ground and the bent over position can limit me when I'm very strong once I get to back strength. I like good mornings and zercher squats.
I need to get some blocks if I'm gonna do rack pulls. I work out at home, and I don't feel like endangering my one bar by pulling it from the rack pins.
The 6 Plate Deadlift @0:17 with a pronated Grip without using straps or grip helpers is very impressive, really sticks out the most for me. (Not saying the other lifts were not impressive, but pulling 6 Plates without straps pronated is just so absurd strong grip strength)
@@grantwaylNo not only the bar, you can’t even do that since you can’t even “dead” lift it, I understand the idea he’s getting behind, but unless you’re a complete beginner with no posterior chain development, then you’ll be fine practicing with a plate or something similar (if you’re really cautious, half a plate each side)
Wondering if testosterone affects focus and energy? The book You Are Stronger Than You Think from Cryptic Lore dives deep into this and offers practical tips
Starting to try a bit of strength training, doing basic deadlifts 5x5. 3 times a week, increasing the weight every workout (only very gradual by like 5.0kg). Biggest issue I have, coming from bodybuilding training, is rest. Using a 5-minute rest period, I time it to make sure. But coming from 60-90 seconds rest between sets. 5 minutes rest at the moment seems like major overkill. So the question is what do you do in a 5-minute rest period?
7:12 had to rewatch that set a few times to make sure if it's, like, spliced footage or AI assisted or something, why are the reps so smooth and similar, wtf
I was coming back from a back tweak there, so pretty light and working on bracing and efficient hinging.... typical work sets sure do not look like that!
Guys can you explain this to me; Bromley always says that he has short arms and a long torso but when he pulls conventional i think his legs are pretty straight just like a lifter with a short torso and long legs and arms. I understand that he has a longer torso but why does it look like he lifts like a short torso guy? Is it because he doesnt actually habe THAT long of a torso or is it because of some technoque thing that i am missing?
A short torso guy is going to typically end up way more pitched over. Their femurs are longer so you can't lower into the bar as effectively. He lifts like a long torso guy because he can start with a way more closed knee angle and upright torso
I competed in powerlifting for over 30 years and what I found also worked for my deadlifts, was not deadlifting! I did the old West Side Barbell approach for them.....trained weaknesses and also did a ton of box squats. Also added reverse hypers. I would tug 3 weeks out from a big meet just to get my set up right and feel the pull.....if my squats were good for my cycle, my deads were spot on too! Good stuff though in the video! I agree that it's easy to overtrain the deads, especially in conjunction with the squats and other lifts. Thank you!
I'm someone who has short arm/long leg syndrome so doing deadlifts really drains my nervous system and I would backslide in strength. Took conventional deadlifts out of my program and my other lifts are growing like a weed. I'll still do RDLs on Squat day to practice hinge pattern. Guess I just benefit from doing little to no deadlifts but I'm sure eventually I'll need to train conventional deadlifts again just need to go with what works for now. Was pulling heavy twice a month but now I do Zercher Squats and Rows on my former Deadlift day.
Like other commenter said, for the average male, a 405 deadlift and 225 bench is a pretty good sign you’re intermediate. You, depending on body weight, are early to late intermediate. Learn to program 4-6 week blocks starting off easy and ending at RPE 9-10
