Universal may not loose as much money as you may think by not increasing ticket prices. They're offering some really good deals on tickets. People who think they've gotten a really good deal are more likely to spend more within the park for food, premium experiences and souvenirs. I don't know the psychology behind it, but it's something I saw all the time when working at an attractions venue.
If Universal plays this up by tempting people to spend more by doing seasonal, limited edition, and playing up the fact that their food and souvenirs are brand new people will spend even more money. So I think they'll loose money on ticketing but between the likely higher sales of things in the park and people staying at Universal resorts more to double down on the deals I think they will make absolute bank overall.

This is what they said I think during their earnings call too. They're focused on getting guests to spend money throughout their vacation so if you price tickets too high, guests will still come but they won't feel like spending as much on food, snacks, merchandise, express passes, etc. Short term loss for a longer term gain here.

The real money maker at the parks has never been the gate ticket price. The only places where the ticket is a majority ofnthe earning is probably a Six Flags park due to them being mostly for rides and not really themed experienced and shopping.

when we had eisner, WDW burger prices were comparable to mcdonald's burger prices, but they were better burgers. pizza? same. rooms? same. even the deluxe resorts prices were comparable to regular hotel prices in big cities. the result were frequent park sellouts, lots of happy families, and an entire generation that became disney adults, that bought AP's every year, buy merch all the time, etc.

It's the same tried-and-true tactic cruise lines have been using for years. They don't make money on ticket sales, but they make lots of money on what people spend onboard.
In-park/in-resort spending is the game Disney and Universal are really playing.

You are missing maybe the most important point. To attend Epic Universe as a non-passholder, you HAVE to buy a multi day ticket that only allows you in Epic 1 day. You are being forced to buy tickets to USF and IOA. How will most people even have time to visit Disney at all if they already have tickets to Universal's legacy parks? IOA and USF will likely not be cannibalized at all and should see attendance increases due to this multi-day ticket requirement.

That's what I thought they'd do, only allow Epic Universe admission to those who buy the multi-day passes. So sure it's "only" $22 increase over last year, but you must buy 2 additional days, so if all you care about is Epic Universe it's actually closer to a $250 increase... more so on the peak days (which probably will be all of them)

Devils advocate here though, you can maybe look at it this way. By the time the initial hype has died down for EU and you can just buy single day tickets (2026 onwards) Disney will potentially be starting to open the first of many new areas, attractions and lands, which is probably spanning the next 2/3-10 years, potentially giving them a longer game plan of people returning for multiple trips as new things gradually open.

@@funkydino that's what most people are glossing over. Disney was focusing on other projects during this time period. Disney knows that 2025 and 2026 belong to Universal. I think starting in 2027, Disney is going to start coming back with an absolute vengeance.

Disney has lost its way completely.
They are creatively bankrupt at imagineering and any new ride is either a clone or something with a major IP attached to it. Once Bob Iger retires they need to hire an external CEO someone like Michael Eisner in his early days. Someone that will let the creatives be creative and come up with world class attractions even if that means there is no pre-existing IP attached to it.

    @GoogalyB 14 днів тому +8

Something I think is very important to mention is the year after Epic’s opening. Besides a refurbished Big Thunder Mountain, Disney currently has NOTHING planned for 2026 at WDW. Those big new rides and areas that they announced won’t be finished until 2027 AT THE EARLIEST. That gives Epic Universe a full year of uninterrupted time to itself while Disney is building those attractions.
2026 is also when Universal will start implementing Epic into all of their usual park bundles and deals, which will likely make it even more enticing to go there alongside the other legacy parks. That’s not even considering that Kids Resort Universal is building in Texas, which currently has a 2026 opening date, which will give people in the area even LESS reason to go to Disney unless they do some MAJOR deals or price cuts.

I've said it once I'll say it again, Disney screwed themselves in the long term by focusing on killing their competition in the short term. They created a half-assed park in Hollywood Studios to try to undercut Universal's launch, and they created another in Animal Kingdom to undercut Busch Gardens. With these two they weren't focused on creating long term parks with solid plans. They didn't think about how insane of a task upkeeping 4 parks at once with both maintenance and new attractions is. They wanted quick and easy solutions to kill competition, and now they're paying for it because they expanded too far. Disney's offerings in 2025 are great if you're considering it for 2 or 3 parks, but for 4? It's absolutely not enough.

MGM Studios was always supposed to be a half-day park, it was birthed out of a proposed Epcot ride/pavilion. Turning it into a theme park with news of Universals moving in next door was the opposite of shortsighted; It succeeded in turning WDW into a true multi-day resort. It was the right move regardless of what Universal was doing (with their disastrous park out the gate lol).
Regarding Animal Kingdom, it obviously opened unfinished; We can blame Iger for it still remaining an unfinished half-day park, since he has put very little into the most recent park at WDW. That said, I'm not sure why you think it was merely a Busch gardens competitor, when Busch gardens existed since the 1950s and WDW was long established as a multi-day destination by the 90s...BG was not much of a legitimate lure bringing tourists away from WDW by the late 90s lol. Universal is also forcing people to go to their parks by bundling Epic tickets with the multi park pass. I actually think too when you look at the demographics that like Universal will probably shift to Sea World who has better coasters and universal visitors skew older and more interested in thrill rides. I would bet Disney has no interest in competing with the opening of Epic and is more focused down the line to do their own grand openings with the revamped villains park and Encanto areas.

At that point they should just close the park for a year and have time to do the retheme and touch-ups to the park. I can see them closing even earlier in 2025, like 5pm or something around there.

Disney's biggest problem is they no longer have the talent that brought the Disney difference. From their new attractions to in park entertainment, it's clear they've lost their way and even worse, the management is now overrun with people who don't understand what made Disney, Disney. Which is why Hollywood Studios now has a 200+ pound chick dancing in the park to Shake it Off as part of their Holiday entertainment.

    • @elevenb6967

But did you die? I mean, you do understand that most of the people who were around when "Disney was being made, Disney" are either dead, or dying, don't you? There's this thing called procreation, where babies are born. And when they are born, they're not born old. They will eventually grow. In the midst of all that, things change, and tastes change.
Young people don't want the in-park holiday entertainment to consist of waifs dancing to the likes of Guy Lombardo, the Everly Brothers, or Lawrence Welk's orchestra. Those days are over, man. Long gone, in fact. And that's just something that you're going to have to get used to. As someone who visited Disney World most years between 1977-2016 and Universal Orlando nearly every year 2002-present, Universal is our go-to park in when we visit Orlando from NC. Disney's idiotic decision to delve into politics is the core reason for their poor dropping attendance, nose dive in sales of their products/services. They lost this revenue, raised prices/cut perks/services/quality to make up the losses, which drove away more guests, etc. This isn't rocket science. Liberal or Conservative, I care not what a company's politics are. Just keep it out of my face and don't lecture me. No matter Universal's politics, they keep it out of the park experience and everyone feels at ease. I was at Universal February 2024 and will be there in January and November of 2025. One week trips each time. Ride for ride, park for park, hotel for hotel, Universal Orlando is an exponentially better value per dollar than Disney World, and the gap will widen further after Epic Universe opens. Disney has no one to blame but themselves. Don't create the storm, then whine when it rains.

    VIDEO RECAP:
Universal’s new Epic Universe theme park will pose a challenge to Disney in 2025. To compete, Disney must offer new attractions, as Universal’s existing parks will not receive any new additions. Disney plans to introduce a nighttime parade at Magic Kingdom, a Zootopia 3D show at Animal Kingdom, and a refurbished Test Track 3.0 at Epcot.
Disney World’s 2025 additions, including Little Mermaid and Villains Live, are positive but not enough to persuade visitors to choose Disney over Universal. Animal Kingdom is expected to suffer due to the closure of Dinosaur and other attractions, while Magic Kingdom and Epcot are likely to benefit from the new additions. Universal’s Epic Universe is expected to have a significant impact on Disney’s attendance, with Animal Kingdom likely to be the most affected park.
