He wanted all 5, or none at all. They had just collectively, been on the cover of Paris Vogue magazine & we’re in very high demand.
You must find his autobiographical film. It’s called Freedom. He did the entire thing, up until the last segment. He had passed away, and if I’m not mistaken, his sister had the final chapter completed. George didn’t live long enough to complete it.
      It’s excellent!

Totally! They wouldn’t understand .. No matter how we try to explain. A definite “had to be there “ situation. Boy did they miss out. I even knew then how special the time was and how nobody would ever understand in the future .. Magical AF⭐️🤍⭐️

Very interesting what you say about being exceptionally attractive. Melissa Etheridge said in a article I read that she was a massive fan of George. She said what made her sad was that a lot of people could not get past how gorgeous he was long enough to just listen to what a phenomenal songwriter and composer he was.

George was very autobiographical. That’s one of the reasons I love him so much and have always been drawn to his lyrics. If you were a lifelong fan then you knew every phase that he went through in his life. Struggles with loneliness, struggles with Sony, bereavement and loss, times when he was super happy and times where his heart hurt because of war hunger, conflict. He was always raw and transparent. He never had a song that I know of, that had filler lyrics. All his lyrics made sense and told you his true story. I love him so much because he left us a beautiful catalog of music. Even more, he was just a loving selfless human being. The amount of money he gave away to so many causes without needing that pat on the back by the media or his peers says a lot. Please please keep discovering more of his music. The evolution of his songwriting is mind blowing. His voice aged so beautifully. Kissing a fool, Cowboys and Angels, Spinning the Wheel, You have Been Loved, are absolutely gorgeous.

I searched reactions to this song. The first 3, I couldn’t even get through the first 2 minutes of them for many reasons. Then I found this.
You grasped the intention of the lyrics in no time. He was in conflict with Sony. They wanted the “Wham” version, but he wasn’t a boy any more. He was a man, and an extremely talented one. If I’m not mistaken, this was the last contractional album he made with them. Years of court hearings, but he finally got out of his contract.
He then went on to record much of his best. R.I.P. George. You carved your path, lived your life, and many of us hold your music deep in our hearts and souls. ♥️✌️🎶

Anton, you should watch his statement after the Sony court case, George said he wrote the songs , produced the songs and recorded the songs, but the songs will always belong to Sony. This is why he wasn’t in the video, it was an F you to Sony.

Marc Ronson (Uptown Funk producer) called this album the Mona Lisa of Albums. He's right. Iconic song, lyrics, video, visuals. Never been topped. The jacket, jukebox and guitar are from Faith video and he blows them up. No plastic surgery. Brand new face is figurative.

At this time many people didn't know he was gay and even though George probably didn't intend for ppl to think this, this was a song THEY associated with him being his coming out song, even though he probably only intended it to be freedom from his record label.
Notice he burned his jacket. That was the jacket he wore in his "Faith" video. Another top 10 song of his at the time, I think.

I believe the reason it was called "Freedom '90" was because in the duo WHAM! in the earlier 80s, they had a song titled "Freedom" more about someone being fairly non-committal in a (seemingly) hetero relationship- as he was portraying back then. Therefore, to me, this song was his "coming out party". The symbolism burning 🔥 his jacket from the "Faith" album and showing us he was letting it all go for his truth of being a gay man. That was all my interpretation - which of course could be wrong and I don't know if he ever spoke about what was in his mind in writing it. However, I also know he started to have conflicts with his record company, and yes somewhat with fame itself. Prince was also an artist by that point who was speaking and writing about his conflicts with the music business, his record company, etc.... so much so that Prince had the word "Slave" written on his cheek for a while for that reason (no, it was not any reference to black history). Again, what I'm writing was either my interpretation (George) and the word on the street and from interviews (Prince).

he used to use the original 90s supermodels in his videos but this one got all of them together ( the term Supermodel was created exclusively because of those models because they were the closest you could get to perfection ) Naomi Campell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington, the burning of the leather jacket and the lack of George on the video was symbolic of him freeing himself from that sexy symbol status he reached ( when he was always with that jacket ) was also because he was tired of portraiting the heterosexual heartthrob on the media

i find it fascinating that your description of your journey through how you "were" presenting yourself in the beginnings was resulting in inflated anxiety ("i hate saying this but, if i don't, no one will know i exist"), & you are critiquing a song embodying that exact sentiment of expression/honesty through this song itself by the artist about himself is spot on! George got to a moment of "whoa, i'm not being me.. i'm not expressing my true self.. i'm portraying a lie just to satisfy a fantasy for the ppl/the corporate bigwigs.." George Michael just wanted to "clear the slate" while, quite literally "burning" all the main visual items (probably dictated to him to be) used in his first solo album single ("Faith") was quite the refreshing "new start" to write his own honesty.. thus an attempt at alleviating his own anxiety in order to express himself for his true self.. you echo that through your own experiences you expressed.. we're all human.. thank you for taking the artistic as well as the psychoanalytical approaches to this "groovy" song/video reactions.. hence "freedom" to be one's self.. please continue to "be you," just as Mr. Michael chose to continue his life's work, & thank you for your honestly!

George Michael did not have plastic surgery . His former wham member Andrew Ridgely did have a nose job after wham broke up .
Now I have a few things to say about your reactions in general . Firstly I do appreciate the energy you put into your reactions . I rarely agree with what you think of the song and or videos , but it’s not about agreeing with the reactor . It’s about hearing someone else’s ideas .
However , I think you need a bit more knowledge about this song and video . I believe your missed an important aspect of this video . It was directed by the great film director David Fincher . I assume you know who this is . I think if you googled and researched the director , the making of the video , even if it’s Wikipedia I think you would get a lot more out of this culturally important song and video . Keep trying , keep educating yourself on the artists you react to .
I am not interested in you or your psyche and I find your self reflecting insanely boring but I think it’s wonderful that you are striving for peace and self improvement . Your self reflecting I am sure may help lots of your viewers . So although I don’t enjoy it is my guess others love it . Good for all of you . Glad the artists are guiding you and bravo for trying to improve yourself . Don’t doubt yourself , you are doing great and I wish all the best in 2022 and beyond .

This was also in the midst of George’s fight with Sony. They wanted him to be a certain type of pop star and he wanted his music to speak for itself. The “face” lyric is about how George changed his image from feminine boy when he was with Wham! to this new created image his label told him would make him a star. He’s saying the constraint of keeping up that image and focusing on that above the music was killing him.
His next few albums would step away from that image focused idea and focus soley on the music. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was the immediate result of that fight and for many of us its his best album.
Not to dismiss Faith at all. Faith was groundbreaking. So many amazing singles that were cutting edge with the latest advancements in music technology at the time. Monkey and Hard Day are my favorites. But his labels idea of how to market it was the disconnect. Watch your own video of the first single. You called it hilarious and immediately commented on Georges Butt shots. You are not alone. The song is not meant to be hilarious and the message was lost because of the video. That’s what started his legal battle with his label…which he lost. Knowing that, listen to his later albums and you can literally track that pain.

Getting a brand-new face is a metaphor for MTV reinventing him after WHAM broke up. George getting all these super models to lip sync the song was just his way thumbing his nose to Sony. He had to produce new music, but his contract did not state he had to be in the music video.

I love the fact that George was fighting against being a “pretty face”, and managed to usher in the age of the supermodel. It was no small feat to get 5 of the biggest faces on the planet together for a video shoot- especially when all these women were from different agencies ( Claudia Schiffer was also asked to be in the video and her agency flatly said, “NO”.) George got the idea from a British Vogue cover by Peter Lindbergh featuring the 5 models in this video ( Naomi, Linda, Christy, Tatiana and Cindy ). In the only industry where women are paid more - the female models made 4 times more than the male models featured, and the guys were also asked to do a full day of reshoots for nothing. Hands down one of my top 3 videos ever. David Fincher is a genius.

Great Reaction. This song goes even deeper. Yes, It relates to his image and his contract. However, getting even more personal, I believe its his coming out song. Even though those short shorts and neon gloves, and everything about "Wake Me Up (Before You Go)" is a dead giveaway, George Michael was still very much a heterosexual six symbol icon. He was not out yet. Back then, that was a BIG deal. It could potentially ruin your career, and even your life to an extent - much more than today, or even in the past 10 years.
"Gotta have some faith in the sound
It's the one good thing that I've got
    I won't let you down
So please don't give me up"
These lyrics above are like a contract with himself and to his audience. Hey, Im gay, my music speaks for itself, and its still genuine and true.
"But today the way I play the game is not the same, no way
Think I'm gonna get me some happy
I think there's something you should know
(I think it's time I told you so)
There's something deep inside of me
(There's someone else I've got to be)"
This is pretty blatant in coming out - being someone else, that was hidden inside him. "Gonna get me some happy" - another word for gay. He could have chosen to phrase that any other way.
Also the album title "Listen Without Prejudice" very much fits his feeling of being a closeted gay man, but living as a heterosexual sex symbol

  • @rosemiller2990

No George never had plastic surgery. He actually said he was against doing anything to himself. What he meant by that line was that he was telling the boys at MTV he had a brand face because he was no longer going to be that sex symbol that he was during the faith era. His brand new face was basically being true to himself and writing the kind of music and not parading himself anymore for the camera.

Anton, you've made my heart happy, thank you!! The jacket, jukebox and guitar were all used in his video for Faith when he redid his image. Blowing them up was so bad ass, he was so bad ass. Who else would make a song and music video (Outside) about his own arrest that was a huge f u to to the Beverly Hills police that entrapped him... allegedly? He was a genius lyricist and that's what he wanted to be known for the most. Yes, he was gorgeous but he didn't think so which I think said so much about him as a man. Talking about his charity after he died my fave was when he was watching a game show where the couple wanted to use the winnings to fund IVF treatment to have a baby. They lost. George immediately called the show and requested to anonymously donate what they needed. He gave somebody the gift of life, his work with the homeless, HIV/AIDS... he saved so many. The world shit on him because of his addictions. I think it was the only way he could handle life, though obviously he needed therapy and he DID get clean. Just too late. My fave GM songs are hands down A Different Corner (which is my fave of all time, any artist) and Spinning The Wheel. I also adore Freeek just because it was a very cheeky song that highlighted how much of a freak he was...lol. Jesus To A Child is special because it's another one of those unflinching pieces that shows his grief at losing his partner to HIV/AIDS. It's very special to me personally. His entire album Older was dedicated to his partner and was absolutely phenomenal. There's so, so many gems from him. White Light was this amazing piece he wrote that, to me, showed he still had it even though he died about 5 years later. Which also makes it very painful to listen to.

    Lyrics:
    I won't let you down
I will not give you up
Gotta have some faith in the sound
It's the one good thing that I've got
    I won't let you down
So please don't give me up
Because I would really, really love to stick around
    Oh, yeah
Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn't know what I wanted to be (Didn't know what I wanted to be)
I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me (And I guess it was enough for me)
To win the race, a prettier face
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV (Rock and roll TV)
But today the way I play the game is not the same, no way
Think I'm gonna get me some happy
I think there's something you should know
(I think it's time I told you so)
There's something deep inside of me
(There's someone else I've got to be)
Take back your picture in a frame
(Take back your singing in the rain)
    I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
    All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you and you don't belong to me, yeah yeah
Freedom (I won't let you down)
Freedom (I will not give you up)
Freedom (Gotta have some faith in the sound)
You've got to give what you take (It's the one good thing that I've got)
Freedom (I won't let you down)
Freedom (So please don't give me up)
    Freedom ('Cause I would really)
You've got to give what you take (really love to stick around)
Heaven knows we sure had some fun, boy
What a kick just a buddy and me (What a kick just a buddy and me)
We had every big-shot goodtime band on the run, boy
We were living in a fantasy (We were living in a fantasy)
We won the race, got out of the place
Went back home, got a brand new face for the boys on MTV (Boys on MTV)
But today the way I play the game has got to change, oh yeah
Now I'm gonna get myself happy
I think there's something you should know
(I think it's time I stopped the show)
There's something deep inside of me
(There's someone I forgot to be)
Take back your picture in a frame
(Don't think that I'll I be back again)
    I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
    All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you and you don't belong to me, yeah yeah
Freedom (I won't let you down)
Freedom (I will not give you up)
Freedom (Gotta have some faith in the sound)
You got to give what you take
(It's the one good thing that I've got)
Freedom (I won't let you down)
Freedom (So please don't give me up)
    Freedom ('Cause I would really)
You got to give what you take (really love to stick around)
Well, it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well
    Posing for another picture
    Everybody's got to sell
But when you shake your ass
    They notice fast
And some mistakes were build to last
    That's what you get
    (That's what you get)
I say that's what you get
(I say that's what you get for changing your mind)
That's what you get for changing your mind
    (That's what you get)
(That's what you get) And after all this time
    I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
    All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me, yeah yeah
    Freedom (Oh)
    Freedom
    (My) Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take
Freedom (I'll hold on to my)
    Freedom
    (My) Freedom
You got to give what, to give what, give what you take
    Yeah!
You got to give what, give to what, to give
May not be what you want from me
Just the way it's got to be
    Lose the face now
    I've got to live

My friends and I called this the “holy sh*t! video” for years after we stared in disbelief at the premiere on tv as in:
“Holy sh*t! that’s Linda Evangelista!” (And having just her in the video would’ve been waaay more than enough to blow our young minds) followed by
“Holy sh*t, that’s Naomi Campbell!” then “Holy sh*t! that’s Christy Turlington!” and “Holy Sh’t that’s Cindy” and “Holy sh*t that’s Tatyana too!”
And even today, especially with the timeless mastery that is George’s writing and vision, holy sh*t this is still an iconic song and video lol

Linda Evangelista, Christie Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz. The Greatest and Original Supermodels in one video. When this came out I flipped my lid over this video It was on constant repeat. Also another great voice, brilliant live as well.
As for you, dude, just be yourself :) For me, when I need to smile, I just watch you react to stuff nd you can tell if you like it, your smile becomes infectious and you will make others smile. We all grow and change and as we experience things we ride those waves and become different guises of ourselves depending on what we have going on around us. I'm a composer and have to work all over the place, and people always think, oh he's this or that, but really, only I truly know who I am and then the people who matter come next.

Hey Anton you seem like a goog guy but the bass line truly makes this song. Deon Estus RIP. Died 2021. He was with George since WHAM!
    Twitter when he died;
Estus played bass with many notable musicians, including Tina Turner, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa and Annie Lennox."
His friends and fellow musicians are sharing their memories of him today: ‘He made everything fun…champagne on ice, frisbee and seemingly endless laughter’," the post reads. "His wonderful spirit and his talent will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Deon."
The official Twitter account for George Michael also offered condolences, saying that he was much more than just an "unbelievably talented" and respected bass player, he was loved and treasured by his family and friends.

This is one of my favourite George Michael songs, along with the one that started it all (& that started the reason for THIS song - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - "& when you shake your _ss, they notice fast, some mistakes were built to last." One of the things that we loved about George MIchael was his free spirited joyful dancing in that song. Most "white" guys in the 80s couldn't dance - not throwing their hips into it like George Michael did - then again he was Greek, so that might explain why he wasn't "white boy standard" or else because he was gay.
This song not only had great lyrics, vocals & music, (& visuals - esp. for the guys [or lesbians]) but was also great because it DID prove George Michael's point. His point was that HIS TALENT could make a song popular, all on its own. It wasn't his face or dance moves that were needed (although they don't hurt!) This song WAS popular - even though NOT ONE SINGLE FACE in this video was George Michael's.

This music video was infamously known for not going well. It went way over budget with the supermodels costing $4000 a hour. It was one of the most expensive music videos for its time. There were on set sqabbles over money and the director almost quit.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, George Michael was seen first as a teen bopper (Wham!) and then a sex symbol (Faith), but it wasn't until Listen without Prejudice vo. 1 that the audience could truly see GM for the great musician and lyrist that he was. He was one of the greatest musicians of our time, and I wish more people can see it. To truly appreciate his talent, you just need to read the songs that he wrote like Freedom 90.

This video was revolutionary for not having the artist in it it was directed by David Fincher who directed Gone girl.
He did a lot of very stylistic videos in the '90s for Billy idol, Aerosmith and more prominent artists.
This video featured all the supermodels from the 90s and what I love was the destruction of all the iconography from George Michael's past.
The destruction of the guitar and the jukebox from the Faith video.
This song is about becoming an image you don't want, George Michael's looks overtook his talent and he became just a hot ass and he didn't like that.
He knew the rules he just didn't know how to play the game because it made him one of the biggest stars of the time but his sexuality was put into question and his ass was plastered everywhere and it hypersexualized him. He takes some culpability because he has some very risque songs but this was his rebellion.
