Learn how to play You Better You Bet as recorded by The Who, from their 1981 album "Face Dances". I'll cover Pete Townshend's rhythm and lead parts, and discuss a bit about the gear he used on it.
Pete's style for me is rooted more as an acoustic/rhythm player who takes that acoustic approach and applies it to his electric playing. That WAY oversimplifies it, but there are tons of examples where it seems how you can hear how he wrote a song on an acoustic guitar, developed his chords and strumming patterns, and then carried that over when he added his electric. For me this song is another example of that. The lead on this song is purely rooted in chords/parts of chords and is among my favorite rock guitar solos ever - you don't need to noodle around in blues scales to build an epic solo! Great example of that.
Related to this lesson is my lesson spotlighting the intro riff that he does - you can find that here • You Better You Bet - T...
Got a suggestion for a piece of a song to cover on an upcoming episode? Leave it in the comments, would love to hear ideas.

Great--origial--post. Too many guitar tutorials on this site simpoly teach the same songs over and over again. Yours is only one of a couple that strive to post original material. Thank you!

When they get to the middle bridge there.. (" I lay on the bed with you...) Pete just digs a little deeper with those chords... it's my favorite part of the song.. also the guitar solo too.

We must be right around the same generation :) This song was really pivotal for me too. One of the things that I think made it so interesting is that it was a song that had a lot of guitar in it, but didn't *sound* like a typical guitar rock song, due to the voicings he used. It was almost more like a keyboard sound the way it was woven into the track. This was probably (though I can't recall) just about my original encounter with The Who (I was 13), so I probably started from here, and then went backwards (seem to recall "Hooligans" being the first album I got, after probably getting "You Better, You Bet" on 45). Thanks for doing this one. The lyrics are pretty crazy, too, right? Pete can sure write lyrics like nobody else can (or would even think to do)!

one more comment (i promise) about pete's soloing -- it's really interesting how the guitarists who did not overplay or were not known as lead players play some of the most awesome and memorable, in my opinion, guitar solos. Examples: "Baba O'Riley", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (Stones), "Sympathy For The Devil" (Stones). but i guess i am just revealing my preferences for great rhythm players...

I’d love to properly learn Don’t Let Go The Coat, also from Face Dances. Thanks.

    I think the chords in the pre-chorus are more like Am Gm F/A C/Bb F/A F5/Ab C/G Gsus4 G

Great post! I learned the solo. You’re guitar seems out of tune though. When I played along with the original track mine was in tune with it. When I play along with your instruction, it is out of tune
