I never heard anybody sing this but Gram and Gene, and i don't wanna hear anybody else. Gene's is the only other voice that could deliver it -- he has that pathos, that sincerity. Carla's harmony is understated and fitting. I wonder what Gram would've thought of this; hope he'd have liked it.

I had to go and listen to Gram's then! I'm with you Declan Murphy. Gene's voice is not only deeply emotional, it's at ease, effortless in its expression. Both Gram and the guy who sang in the recent No Other band sound like it was an effort to sing at that level of emotion. Gene is so clear and pure, no angst. Ironic given he certainly had plenty! but makes it such a pleasure to listen to.
This is one musical giant paying homage to another. It is Gram's finest hour and anyone who tackles this masterpiece signs a pledge that they will only be permitted to take their talent and emotions to the doorstep, and not into the soul of Hot Burrito #1.
David Murray that’s certainly a fair critique...but name another song that Gram sang like this one, and I can name 20 that Gene slayed. Including one with the Burrito Brothers. I love Gram, but if Phil Kaufman hadn’t gotten involved after GP died (with every right, in my opinion) Gene would be the guy most remembered. I love Gram, and he did some amazing things, but Gene had done more by the time he finished his second solo record than Gram ever accomplished.

In a world unmarred by drugs, inflated egos, and personality disorder, McGuinn and Crosby would've realized that fact, The original Byrds would've extended their career another eight years, and Gene would've had a shorter solo career. All of which would've been okay by me. It's great that Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke remained, from my understanding, true friends to Gene through the years. In retrospect all three were really the soul of the group.
The 3 Amigos anchoring the bottom line eh? Yes, would have been wondeeful if the original 5 could have hung together harmoniously in more than one way for a few years longer, particularly for Gene but I guess then we may have not got the gift of Dillard & Clark or the writing that culminated in White Light or No Other.... each in the lead of creation of country rock, the singer-songwriter and concept album progressions. So sad that drugs, alcohol and the initially slow recognition of each of those aforsaid developments in popular music created the basis of grief in Gene’s career and contributed to his too early loss of life. A sensative, creative with the voice and a willingness to reveal his heart and soul, both lyrically and in performance. RIP and Thank You Gene Clark. 🌹🎼
Well said, Pam, but it's a rare genius who finds his or her comfort zone of both recognition and understanding in the times they live in. Gene was one of those. Dylan and Shane MacGowan are examples of those who luckily overcame that fate. And perhaps worse than the drink, drugs, and morbid fears of failure for Gene was the toxic presence of David Crosby in his life. The guy with a singular talent, those incomparable high harmonies, sniping at the guy who literally could've carried The Byrds forward lyrically, musically, vocally very nearly by himself. I'd guess that Chris and Michael had front row seats to the destruction that was going on.
