After getting married on February 18, 1978, Philip and Brenda Nicholas relocated to Los Angeles and formed a new group simply called Nicholas. The teamed up with another Motown executive, Kenneth Washburn, who sank $50,000 into Nicholas's first album, but Motown couldn't manufacture it because it didn't fall within the company's musical demographic. No major company would buy the record, so Philip's brother, Lonnie, sold his own house and loaned the money to Nicholas to manufacture the album themselves. Nicholas formed Message Records in 1981, although Philip continued to work as an accountant with the U.S. Defense Department, while Brenda held a secretarial job.
Finally, their first album, "Tell The World", was released and the group was rounded out with Linda Laury Harold and Steve Jackson. A local DJ who owed them a favor played the record enough for it to create a buzz in the L. A. gospel community. On the strength of the single, "God's Woman", the album began to sell. Churches began to call with concert dates. By the time their second album, "Words Can't Express", was issued in 1983, the group had become a top draw in gospel. The album reached the Top Ten on Billboard's spiritual chart and remained on the chart for 81 weeks.
After arguing with Lonnie over the direction of the company, Philip gave him Message Records and formed Command Records in 1985. They reduced themselves to duo status and secured national distribution via Lexicon/Light Records, one of the largest gospel distributors at the time. In July 1985, the album "Dedicated" was released to great fanfare within the gospel world. The album was voted Billboard's number one spiritual album of 1986 and eventually picked up both Grammy and Dove award nominations. The title song was a soulful love song that recalled the best of R & B duos such as Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell. The same year, Command grossed over $750,000. At the time Philip said, "We are not driving Rolls-Royces yet. I don't want to go through that change. But, I do drive a nice, new sporty car. And instead of making $300 per performance, we are now getting $3,000 to $4,000." Over the next decade, Nicholas created further hits such as "Tell Somebody", "God's Woman", "Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus", "A Completed Woman" and "The Closer I Get To You" (a gospel remake of the Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway classic).
This was my favorite song to hear live in a concert. Brenda and Ms. Elmore would hit those angelic high notes and take us all into high worship of the Lord. I miss those days.❤️

Nicholas was my favorite gospel group from the 80's. They do not get the credit they deserve. I still love them..

I remember singing, in my bedroom mirror, to every song on this album when I was a teenager ... I wish I could find the entire album here on UA-cam... Thank you for posting this. I close my eyes and I'm right back in my childhood bedroom singing this song in my hairbrush microphone.... GLORY to His name!!! 🙌🏾
Back in the day our church Liberty Temple Full Gospel ⛪ Church Tv program used this song at the end of each program. Hearing it now since 1988 brings joy and tears. Thank you Jesus.
This song has long been one of my favorite gospel songs from since I was a little girl. I especially love the ending half of the song. I have always imagined that this is the closet that I could come to hearing what angels sounded like. Such beautiful voices and such an amazing vocal range.
I stayed with their mother Rev Nicholas in the early 80s in West Chester Pa, because there were no rooms left in the dorms at West Chester University. From their I learned of their music and have loved it ever since! Especially this song and God's Woman!
I just witnessed these angelic voices sing on a classic TBN praise from1982 held at Pastor E.V. Hill Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Las Angeles, CA
That entire album was wonderful.....I have the CD and i Still listen to it on a weekly basis!!

Thank you for posting this song which spurred my acceptance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the evening I first heard Nicholas sing "Highest Praise" at the "YOUTH ALIVE" event at Clifford Park in Nassau. Bahamas. MAY GOD CONTINUALLY BLESS THEIR FAMILY!!!

Love this song since the first time I heard it back in 1981. I always lose it @2:10 as my friend Aladrian Slade Elmore is the featured contralto hitting those high notes.
