As an instructor in a past life, the phrase "Those who can, do. and those who can't, teach." has always bothered me. Those teachers that are from the "can't" spectrum are poor instructors as well. When you are lucky enough to have a "Can" instructor, you will understand the knowledge given and understanding is 1000 times better then memorizing. We are fortunate enough to have a top end pro that can teach as well, a dynamic duo. Well done Niels. I just discovered your videos and being someone that formally taught technical instruction in the past, I instantly recognized both knowledge and instructional technique in you. I love the science of pool and love to teach others and your videos just got added to my must watch series of pool lessons. PS I am no one of consequence in the pool world but I love teaching and learning pool. Most recently bridging at the pivot point with BHE and FHE (Back and Front Hand English), has been a game changer for cue ball control.

one of the better instructionals ive seen. the funnel concept is a revelation. ive heard of "crossing the position line" often in commentaries , but never has it been explained. bert kinnister, the best pool instructor in the game, taught neils the game, and it shows here. too many "instructionals" on youtube, like sharivari and the like, waste your time with impractical or basic knowledge, and as a result you learn nothing

@@Soniccues I agree with your opinion on the phrase. It’s definitely better to have a teacher who can demonstrate instead of just teaching theory alone, but to me, I think the meaning comes from the perspective of someone who can no longer do, as is the case with coaches, for example. While young, they can perform at peak levels. Once retired, they dedicate themselves to teaching from all the experience acquired. At least Neils can still do both.

Great instruction Niels, for your top point -playing into funnels you might want to add a graphic onto the video to show what you mean...your final acceptable position area is triangle shaped and you're encouraging entering from the furthest end. Maybe draw that triangle onscreen so people can visualize what you're describing.

Great instruction as always, Niels. I've always heard of the "funnel" as playing into a "wedge" for position.
For beginners to the concept, it might be a good idea to explain that the funnel is called that because it widens the farther you get from the object ball. I think it helps people to visualize the proper zone they should be looking for as well as emphasizing the increased margin for error in speed as well as direction.
Love watching you play, some of the most solid fundamentals out there. A great pro for a beginner to model their foundation after. Keep up the good work!

Great video Neils, I think for beginners its worth mentioning that you need to be on the correct side of the ball. meaning that the pocket line of the object ball into the pocket. so when playing position come off a rail and make sure you come into position but also make sure that you are on the left or right of the pocket line (object ball going through the pocket).
So having ball in hand is really important to create the angle that will ultimately get you in that position zone with maximum margin of error (speed) rather than (direction).
Planning perfect position is an art especially when the layouts are extremely difficult.

Excellent. How could you get 43,000 views in 9 days?! By breaking down position to planning only 3 shots ahead I will not feel overwhelmed by the entire table. Playing into the funnel leaves so much more room for error. Following is much easier to control than drawing and going 3 rails can be much better than 2 rails. I never even thought of that.
I retired and am taking up pool again after a 50 year lay off and am amazed at how uncomfortable I feel at the table. It's not because of age related physical limitations. I used to feel completely comfortable at the table. I'm in good shape but need practice to properly align my body so as to be able to hit the ball without unintended English. Do you have a video on proper stance? Thanks Niels for the clear voice and easily understandable audio!

Excellent 😊 I see your cue is under your dominant eye. I heard you only have good vision out of that eye. Is that true? Thanks again for a great tutorial!

Wow you really explain it so well. I hope you can give some tips about the grip because I'm really struggling on it because they said it's very stiff

Thank you!! The grip should be like you’re squeezing it and then relax it. Then it should feel nice. Not too loose and not too tight 👍🏼👍🏼

Great video! Subscribed! It's nice to see someone demonstrating their advice while illustrating the simple things that may not be so obvious. Some times a great player sees it in their head and can execute, but cannot articulate to a protege or someone simply asking for advice. Thank you. Look forward to future videos! Cheers
