I didn't believe my friend when I was told that there's a YT video about "dolphins getting high on a pufferfish and just dancing around," and here I am.
I'm not the least bit surprised by this. Tursiops truncatus (the bottlenose dolphin) is one of the most intelligent species in the world, and has a well organized social structure. No sooner does one of them figure something out, but they pass along that knowledge to other members of their social group, and soon they're all doing it and teaching it to their offspring.
It's no more surprising than when our early ancestors witnessed monkeys getting wasted on naturally fermented fruit, and followed their example. I'd have been surprised if dolphins didn't find a way to "get their swerve on."
Just because they caught this on camera doesn't mean they do it regularly. That high is actually poison and even if they're smart animals they don't do this regularly or for fun.
@@dariusus9870 The fact that they passed the fugu around with a practiced motion would argue against your point. They also did so routinely, which means they'd done it many times before and knew exactly what they were doing.
After they finished passing their recreational drug around, the camera recorded them hanging just below the surface of the water, observing their own reflections in "a trance-like state." They knew exactly what they were doing, and exactly what to expect, which also argues against your point.
In other words, this wasn't "a bunch of kids messing around with their first joints," these were adult dolphins doing something they've done many times before, knowing exactly what they were doing and exactly what the result would be.
Bear in mind that almost everything bottlenose dolphins do is "learned behaviour," other than a few instinctive basics (swimming, breathing, using echolocation and only one hemisphere of the brain sleeping at a time). That means that anytime you see a bottlenose dolphin doing anything other than those instinctual activities, you're observing a learned behaviour. Somebody obviously taught them how to "get high" on pufferfish toxin, and (more importantly) how to control their dosage so that they don't die, but end up "tripping balls" instead.
Obviously, bottlenose dolphins are even smarter than scientists previously thought, given the fact that they've evolved a recreational drug culture that is uniquely their own.🤣
You know what else is poisonous? Peyote is an alkaloid toxin, but it's one people have been using for thousands of years. It's even considered a blessed sacrament to certain Native Americans.
You know what else is a poison? Amanita Muscaria, a.k.a. "the flykiller mushroom," which also contains an alkaloid toxin, and has also been used for thousands of years by European pagans. First, it makes you throw up a lot, then it causes an intense high with vivid hallucations.
Druids (and even some early Christian clerics) would undergo the so-called "bull dream," when they needed spiritual guidance; this involved slaughtering a bull, cooking the meat in a stew laced with Amanita Muscaria mushrooms, wrapping the would-be visionary in the raw, untanned hide, then stuffing him full of the stew and leaving him alone to experience divine visions.
Even your run of the mill "magic mushrooms" involve yet another alkaloid toxin, just a considerably milder one than some other mushrooms pack. Hell, even LSD is derived from a toxic mould known as "hound's tooth," that grows on rye grown in damp conditions. Once ingested, this mould causes ergotine poisoning, which may have been responsible for the hysteria behind the Salem witch trials.
Jimson weed, a.k.a. "loco weed" (datura stramonium) is also an alkaloid toxin, yet some people use it to get high too. Personally, I wouldn't mess with "loco weed," but hey, some folks will do almost anything for a buzz.🤣

Although I'm not into drugs myself, other than the occasional bit of hash (which is legal in Canada) I once spent a fair amount of time researching various drug cultures around the world. It seems as though people and other intelligent species (like great apes, dolphins etc) have been finding ways to "get high" for as long as we've been around.🤣
Whether it's via alcohol or various natural products, it seems like most folks just want to "get their swerve on," by any means available to them.😉
