  • Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92) was the leading portrait painter of the 18th century, and 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of his birth. An imaginative and creative artist, Reynolds’ portraits were admired for their innovative compositions and ability to capture an individual’s distinctive personality. The National Trust cares for the largest body and widest distribution of works by Joshua Reynolds in the British historic house setting. This collection is formed of 76 of his oil paintings, 607 print copies of his works, with more in bound volumes, and 77 copies of his written works.
In this video, we join Dr John Chu, Senior National Curator, and Rebecca Hellen, Senior National Conservator, at Knole and the Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio in Kent to celebrate Reynolds. They tell us about his history - sharing what was special about Reynolds in his own lifetime and why we continue to look at his artwork in the present day. You’ll also hear about some of the conservation work that’s being done on a few of his paintings.
We’d like to thank the Royal Oak Foundation and John Maynard for their continued support.
