My name is Kaiya Pelletier and I am documenting my metal journey as I discover and listen to metal music for the first time ever. I'm in my mid 20's and I've been a singer songwriter and performer for over 10 years. Currently I live in Stillwater, Oklahoma and I am in the process of recording my 4th album. I have a Bloodhound named Spooner, I love Mexican food, collecting Stephen King novels, collecting CD's and cassettes and my favorite movies are tied between Jurassic Park and Alien.

Anything deemed a threat to any of their man-made book faith-based reality is something to panic about. 🔭☀🌎 Anyone on the left trying to ban straight marriage? But, they're under attack!! Religious Conservatives (some even democrat like Tipper Gore) and the Christian Coalition, the original and true cancel culture woke with likes of Jesus. They don't want anyone to burn, unless its at the stake. A woman not wearing a towel on her head can still equal death in some countries.
But I blame 3 years of Biden, Hollywood, soybois, music, and video games for all the violence and worlds problems. While offering more organized religion for the solution for world peace and unity, after 2000+ years of fighting.
You missed the part where Michelle Remembers was proven to be complete BS 💀
Do you wanna make out or cuddle while watching a rom-com? No pressure.
Tipper Gore was a marketing genius. The Parental Advisory Label made the albums seem more rebellious and it helped sell albums. I love the irony.
Having grown up in that era, I can personally say that that sticker only made that album more sought after by kids. Thank you Tipper for enriching my youth!🤣
@@ronin4713 💯
I remember Stephen Tyler thanking her for the grammy for Pump. lol
Sometimes, I wonder if it was all part of a plan.
@@jjrbarnett Tipper was a true believer. Was she used? Thats certainly possible.
One of our teachers at High School warned us of the “dangers” of Heavy Metal and that there were backwards messages etc. This was in the mid 1980s. We knew it to be absurd back then. Seems even more ridiculous now. Anyway, I bought a ticket to see Ozzy when he played in our city…
It's not absurd because it can have curses and a life of bad luck in it, you lose.
@@drmidnight680-kz2le Grow up. There is no such thing as Satan and God. They are man made fairy stories, and check your spelling. I think you meant lose not “loose”.
@@drmidnight680-kz2le The only way to 'lose' in That scenario is if anyone is dumb enought to believe it!😳😮😊😁😂😂🐒👻🎃🐔
@@drmidnight680-kz2le Just stop
@@drmidnight680-kz2le were you raised on leaded paint chips?
Born in 1971. So a child in the 70's. Teenager in the 80's. In my 20's in the 90's. What a time to be alive. It rocked.
I can tell you from my experience that every Metal Head was accused of being a devil worshipper during the time of the Satanic Panic. I remember being accused of devil worship in the later part of the Satanic Panic just for wearing Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper T-shirts. Funny because Alice Cooper has been a born again Christian for quite a long time.
I understand, unfortunatly it's hard to argue your point when they won't listen because Satan is just talking through you.
The worst time I had was in line to get inside at an Iron Maiden concert (World Slavery Tour) there was a literal bus load of bible thumpers who all had video camera's and were shouting at us, sticking cameras in our faces saying "don't go in there, son, you will go straight to hell. Stay out here with us & we'll protect you from the devil. All really rude, loud and obnoxious "Christians" there. That was just getting into the venue.
It was the best Maiden show I've ever seen though.
✌️☮️
Now it's the same just replace metal with gay/drag
I was accused of that when I was a teen kn the 2000s. I grew up in an Arab country (Jordan), in a consecrated Christian family and attended a private Greek Orthodox Christian school all my school years
Specifically when I was 13, I got into metal and was so happy about the cool music I found and so told a lot of my friends, classmates and relatives, only to get an insane backlash and start getting called a devil worshiper, f-word and all kinds of other slurs
But I embraced it completely and became goth for a while (I'm still goth in my heart)
It made me quite infamous. Some people thought I could actually curse them 😂
Me too on iron maiden shirt as well..Eddie was Satan born again on a t shirt..
Technically you are, no accustation, just fact
I grew up through this and remember it well. When I was a teen in high school Metal was very much a guilty pleasure and I usually listened through headphones cos my mother is very Christian.
My mom was christian but didn't mind my music - even LIKED some!
My dad - a borderline atheist - however, was convinced I was involved in Satan worship 🤦🏻♂️
School and stuff sucked 😐
My grandfather I guess talked to my mother long time ago saying “he listens to that STEEL MUSIC!!!” hahaha
It’s hilarious that he called heavy metal “steel music” 😂😂😂
The Satanic panic never ended.
Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Great topic, I'm glad you are covering it! My experience with the satanic panic was likely typical of the time. I grew up in the 80's and 90's in the Midwest in a small a tight-knit, very conservative christian farming community. I went to private christian school from kindergarten through high school. I remember the stories flying around about Satan worshippers sacrificing kids and the evils of rock music, and the fervor and fear that they caused. The pastor often preached about it. My parents invited the pastor over and we viewed the film "Hell's Bells" meant to scare my siblings and I away from rock and metal music. I thought these stories and the panic were ridiculous and used the aforementioned film to find more bands to listen to. My christian high school held a cd and tape burning, which I also thought was ridiculous. I DO blame my parents and other community adults for buying into this panic- the truth was out there and discoverable. There was NO evidence that any of the stories were true. Suffice it to say that I did not burn my Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, Motley Crue, and other rock and metal albums; I listened to them.
The Bible itself & religion was invented to induce fear & keep people in control. It's ass backwards! That's why I love metal It's a big middle finger to that!
And people say this generation is sensitive 😂
As a child of the 80’s I’ve got to say it was the satanic panic that scared the shit out of me. I could hear the music and have no clue it was what they were talking about but things people told me about the bands terrified me! I remember my kindergarten teacher telling us KISS stood for kids in satins service and that terrified me but if i heard a KISS song i wouldn’t have ever guessed it was then lol
I grew up through the whole Satanic Panic thing. I can say Charles Manson and The Rolling Stones concert at Altamont really put an end to the whole "peace and love" thing from the sixties and set the tone for a much darker time that eventually ushered in the "Panic". The early 80s were awesome though, discovering Mercyful Fate, Venom, Slayer for the first time.
Coven got started back then also when the Altamont with the Rolling Stone and Charlie Mason happen as the sametime the Church of Satan and Rosemary Baby were out
The book “Michelle Remembers” is was 100% fiction.
Fr. While I do believe Michelle really said everything that was said in the book, she was definitely manipulated and coursed to fit her thoughts for an agenda, in this case Satanism.
It was exactly the Satanic Panic that drove me to heavy metal and D&D back in the day. There used to be pamphlets handed out by church groups listing bands that kids should not listen to, like Mercyful Fate, Ruthless, Slayer, and of course Iron Maiden. And of course, I got into all those bands. Once death metal came around, with Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, I took to it like a duck to water!
I used to find those pamphlets and Christian comics stuffed in my locker at school. I was a giant, long haired, greasy teen that walked around wearing an Iron Maiden T-shirt and D&D books in my backpack. All while living in the bible belt.
It didn't help that a friend, as a joke, told people that I was a satanic priest.
It had the Streisand Effect when they demonized heavy metal. Totally the opposite effect with kids that they thought it would. 😂
@@FWDSUXARSE They were also projecting.
Excellent video.
I’m a 54 year old Metal Head, who turned out fairly well adjusted, as did my children.
My son is starting his own Death Metal band, in Washington.
Not my genre, but he’s got excellent vocals.
I’m a Catholic, he turned out Agnostic.
We share the same love and interest in playing guitar, and music in general.
I’ve grown particularly fond of Scandinavian groups, they combine more classical music, and folk, with more Heavy Metal imagery.
The Satanic Panic is still alive and well.
Where ever there is profit to be made, there will always be “Prophets”, whom I like to refer to, as literary capitalists, exploiting people’s ignorance and superstitious fears, so they can part them fraudulently from their hard earned money.
Most metal head are totally normal, well adjusted good people. This was totally ridiculous, I hate that the Qanon nutcases are trying to bring this back that thousands of children are being kidnapped, murdered and their blood is drunk.
This is a super well-done video. Official documentary quality. Keep metal alive \m/
Thank you!! I really appreciate it 🙏🏻❤ Planning on doing more vids like this in the near future.
@@imaKaiyaYou should, and it's pronounced Heraldo!
A really good video, you should absolutely be proud of it.We had the exact same hysteria here in Sweden and i heard about it all the time.
This was a great and well thought out video. Stay Metal. I grew up in the south, and was literally born on Halloween and naturally liked darker colors and themes and a very early age. Because of all that i had a shit ton of rumors about me, everything from obviously being a satanist. And shit like i had buried animals at the end of my driveway, because i had crosses that my grandmother had put up cause she cant see in the dark very well, so she had them at the end of the driveway so she could see where to turn. Of course it didnt help none when you wore band shirts like Cannibal Corpse, Incantation Mayhem. Literally when i first got into the metal and darker stuff, i was one of the only 3 metalheads at my school. Yeah shit sucked for a while.
Girl, Bravo! I grew up in all of this, watching skeptically due to so many chopped, crappy vids. But this is the best, most in depth video I have ever seen. You covered so much of the high points that I cannot even give you any grand points you left out. I am still a metalhead, always will be. What's funny is, if you look around, metal is not the driving force of satanic tones anymore, it's pop music, Hollywierd (it's always been Hollywood first with Satanism. Did you know that the choice wood that magic wands were made of Holly trees?) and the CIA, FBI and politicians driving it nowadays. I look back and see 80s metal as warning us what to watch out for. Anyways, you did a wonderful job on this video. Thank you for this, I will definitely share, watch again and continue to view more of your product. Save the children, this is not over, the satanic rituals are still going strong. 10th man. What a great quote! P.S. God, I hated the P.M.R.C.! Lol
Holy shit. Someone learned nothing from the video
I am a music major in college and Metal is my favorite music. Death Metal is my favorite genre of extreme music. I also love Black Metal and Speed Thrash. This is a great video that educates about the world I live in. Metal rules supreme!
Love that you've used synthwave style music in this, a genre that's definitely picked up and using in part the Satanic panic imagery and more in their music and live shows. Bands like Carpenter Brut, Perturbator, Dance With The Dead, Nightstalker and more.
Perturbator are especially amazing
@@eon14873 Synthwave kicks so much ass!
Excellent video.
You just forgot one thing. Deep Purple (the other band that created Heavy Metal alongside Black Sabbath) released their famous "Made in Japan" live álbum. One of the songs there, "The Mule", openly saying that they are "Lucifer's Friends, a slave of the Mule".
There was a band called "Lucifers Friends" in 1970 also.
Great job on your video! I lived through the Satanic Panic and you have taught me more about it than I previously knew, despite being familiar with the crazy Geraldo show where he named Ozzy as the Prince of Darkness.
ricky kasso is from my hometown 😭😭😭 the murder was about drugs. not satan or whatever. and it’s heartbreaking. there was a lot of sensational content about it at the time that was use to totally smear our town and continue perpetuating the stereotype of scary metal kids. so sad😕
I personally grew up during the "Satanic panic," having turned 14 in 1980. It was during this time that I began to listen to rock music, which having grown up in a religious home, my father did NOT appreciate my kind of music, which BTW wasn't death metal but groups such as Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath (ALL of which I STILL love to this day!). I also read the Satanic bible out of curiosity more than anything else, and experimented with a 'Ouija board, ' omg!! Needless to say, my father did NOT appreciate any of this and he personally broke my rock albums and Ouija board!! That'll show me! Nope!! That caused me to rebel all the more!! So, in a weird way I can identify with those who were wrongly accused of being 'satanists!' And all along my father had been 'physically abusing ' my mother whom I protected as much as I able to. To this day I don't care for organized religion, having experienced what I went through, but to each their own. The 80s were definitely a crazy time to have been through. Thanks for creating this video!
These fake Christian hypocrites crack me up. I remember those clowns on TV when I was a kid trying to scare people into sending them money.
im a relatively young metal head and i still get comments about "going to hell" and "repenting" from rock music... definitely hasn't gone completely
For sure, I've seen whole channels almost dedicated to trying to convince people that rock/metal is satanic... still. It's crazy
I myself am Christian, but wow I realize how crazy some of them can be, freaking out over the smallest of things. I'm glad I grew up with parents that were chill with things that most Christians lost their minds on
Also, I'm more of a rock fan, not so much metal (mostly due to stylistic preferences), but there's still some metal bands I like, like SoaD
Awesome channel girl. Love it! Been into metal since 4th grade and haven’t left the metal scene I’m 31 have a 11 year old daughter and she’s into metal. Keep the ball a rolling!
I heard about the McMartin case on a podcast and its mindblowing how insane the accusations got
Well done! Nicely researched - well delivered in narrative - well supported in images. I’m 70, so I’m too old for it (though I remember it in the news) and you are too young, but I believe you have nailed it.
Dee Snider, Frank Zappa, John Denver
All went against the pmrc, one of these things is not like the other. but i respect Denver for protesting with them
This is why I love Venom and Slayer. To hear their satanic content, one needs to play them forwards.
Very well researched. I started getting into thrash metal in the late 80s around the age of 12. Growing my hair long etc. My mom would constantly throw out my "Satanic" albums. Still love bands like Maiden, Death, Behemoth, etc.
Nice shirt girl! Excellant video, I was a metal head as a kid and had to deal with a mom who was enveloped by this stupid shit, I’m glad it’s being talked about regularly, finally, I’ve been waiting awhile for this to be common knowledge, a lot of years. (You said deBUted, you say it like “day beud”. Also it’s Anton levey lol sorry I’m just letting ya know, great video :) also also you’re absolutely correct about slayer being the birth of death metal, I fully agree.
The whole part about "saving children" around 32:00 sounds eeriely familiar...
I was growing up in 80's and 90's were my teen years. I started to listen to metal in 1988 and Death Metal was just rolling in with bands like Death, Morbid Angel and couple of years later Deicide, Unleashed and so on... We didn't really gave a crap about all this occult and Satanic stuff. What was important the most was aggression and low growling vocals. But as someone growing up in non-English speaking country most of the lyrics didn't even matter and all we knew was some snippets of interviews translated to our language.
Big time Metalhead since I was young and still an, I remember the Satanic Panic and the whole Geraldo thing. I am niw 53 and still a Metalhead! Subbed to your channel.
Oh yes! I remember this very very well! Too well! My love for metal and D&D started in the 1980s when my uncle played Judas Priest's "Green Manalishi." (originally by Fleetwood Mac) and I played my first dungeon campaign. I was hooked on both immediately. I remember the metal broadcasts in FM radio! "Metal shop! The show with teeth!" I was heckled for being a "burnout", "outcast", "nerd" and the list goes on. In those early days, a lot of the music was labeled as hard rock. Those years was a cultural shift for me. I was a latch key kid & an immigrant's son. My father being Japanese; born and raised as a Southern Baptist in the Philippines and my mother being Chinese-Catholic and Philippine born and raised did not like my tastes. They still don't . Looking back I found myself thinking how fragile the human psyche is. Now a days I live in North East Japan due to a job transfer. I still listen to metal and goth. I still play D&D.
The HBO movie "Indictment" was terrific-Best HBO film I've ever seen. Watch it when you get a chance.
Black Sabbath was tremendously misunderstood. The dark references were more of a warning, than an endorsement of Satan!
I'm from northport n.y., and grew up under the dark cloud that kasso caused. Watch the doc "the Acid King" it was made just a couple years ago. Kasso had nothing to do with the knights of the black circle, other than they were "kids" who lived in the same town.
Black Oak Arkansas was also accused this backwards playing satanic content--given their most familiar hit--'*"Jim Dandy.'"
Unsure if anyone mentioned, Metal: A headbangers journey, plus all follow up by Sam Dunn is worth checking out. He did a great job
Ozzy says they were all jamming one night and there was a Movie Theater across the street. A Horror Film was showing.
Someone said to the effect, that a lot of people go to Horror Movies, maybe we should play freaky, scary music. That's how it started.
There were a lot of people freaked out about Satan worship. I think there have always been people participating. I think there are a lot of rumors and such too. I went to a lot of Concerts back then, didn't go to death metal, but bands like Black Sabbath. I didn't see any Satan worship.
I lived through this! It was rough with parents and classmates convinced anyone who listened to Metal was a Devil worshipper. The hysteria was crazy.
Got into rock at age six in '78. I grew up a HUGE KISS fan. I'm lucky as my parents encouraged my musical exploration.
I grew up at the ass end of the satanic panic lol but in Appalachia in the late 90s early 00s Satan was real and very scary 😂 my school thought I was a cult leader 😂😂😂 great video 🤘🤘🤘
I grew up in an evangelical family in the 80s, so I am well too familiar with the Sataniv panic. For me, it meant having all my He-Man and Thundercats toys thrown away. I grew up being terrified of heavy metal music. Today, it's not my favorite music, but I do like some Metallica and Ozzie Ozborne and appreciate the genre for what it actually is.
Who doesn't love Satan and metal?!
My parents were still worried about the music i listen to being satanic well into the 2010's. I still listen to it and if anything i wish more of them were actually anti-christian
the first Led Zeppelin album was released in 1969, in 1968 a test pressing was released as an advance on december 30 but is not considered the official release date.
Thank for bringing up a topic that 10000000 people before you talked about and they didnt read it from a sheet.
Very excellent and awsome video
The panic was a massive mix of real and fake issues. Looking into the Franklin Scandal and things like the kidnapping of Johnny Gosh will unearth a whole other side of what was going on. Real issues often get astroturfed with ludicrous ones.
I remember the PMRC. A fkng witch hunt. Frank Zappa tore them a new a-hole.
To this day it cracks me up how old people took metal lyrics seriously. Yes Tipper, Slayer actually sacrificed people at the altar, absolutely.
Great content and analysis, however, how can somebody talk about the Satanic panic, the 80's, Death Metal, and even The Exorcist, without talking about POSSESSED where it all began with the album "SEVEN CHURCHES"?
My parents was scared of my room, especially my Mom, Iron Maiden number of the beast poster along with Peice of Mind Poster next to Ozzy speak of the devil poster with warlock Doro Pesch, and of course Slayer poster, Black Sabbath poster also with the music being played, in a fixed up basement was my room, head bangers ball play on TV, along with scary Movies and Elvira lol, beet all off i learned to play guitar and Bass guitar took classical lessons to play like Randy Roads, Tony Ionmi, Black Sabbath was actually very instrumental is so cool so talented and musically inclined they are along with so many more, i still Jammm ! Heavy Metal 2023 and i will keep on 😜 -💀 🎉
The best part is the original Death shirt from the 90’s
Hey Cool Death Shirt. I live in ALtamonte Springs the hometown of Chuck Schuldiner and the band Death. I live minutes from his old house that is still owned by friends of his family. Yes back then times were challenging. People you didn't even know would say things as you walked by just for wearing your Metallica or Iron Maiden shirt etc. In other times groups of men looking to flex would literally get in our face or shoulder check us. Over all as metal heads in the 80's and 90's we were considered by some as lower class citizens. Police would harass us always assuming we were up to some kind of crimes. Servers at restaurants would lower their level of service and condescendingly talk down to us. Nobody would hire us for jobs ...we could only get jobs where other long hairs were hired. Passers by on the road would yell "get a hair cut!!!!" . The "get a haircut " thing became so popular that fellow metal heads would often endearingly say to each other " get a haircut". Doesn't that sound familiar? You had to keep your head on a swivel as I recall. Random moments in public or at school were never taken for granted as you never knew when trouble would find you. We did fight back especially at my HS back then. But you still had to be cautious in public and it sucked. How in the hell are we fans of bands outselling Pop music considered the outcasts??? It didnt make sense. But I did want to share one last thing. If you were just moving through public and you saw someone else wearing a metal T-shirt you instantly praised them with the devil horns and screaming "hell yeah". Those moments brought so much comfort and reassuring good time feelings . In some weird way we cared for each other as an extended community and pumped other metal heads up even if we didnt know them. We were one big family all going though the same shit and it was on at the concerts we would all attend. If you want more history, Im happy to help. Dont even get me started on the Naphobia parties or the Crypt. I could go on for hours.
I am glad Napalm Death is mentioned here. I recall back in the mid 1990's as a 16-year-old answering the door to some Jehovah's Witnesses wearing a Napalm Death shirt. My brother couldn't stop laughing 😂.
Heavy metal music, by nature is supposed to offend. The satanic panic era was a tip of the hat that it was doing its job.
Early 80's as a kid I was told that AC/DC stood for Anti-Christ/Devil's Children and KISS abbreviated Knights In Satan's Service. Looking back on the bands now, it is more ridiculous now then it was then.
Like seeing images in clouds, you hear what you want to hear when playing a record backwards.
He didn’t impersonate actual celebrities but Kenny was as spontaneous as Robin Williams or Jim Cary & the risqué comic king of mainstream British radio at least during his life & he deserves to live on because he never needed to be cruel to anyone to get laughs . God knows British local & national radio is a now tragic thing devoid of fun compared to his days in this world. 😁❤️
The above comment probably applies to the previous video I’d watched about the COMIC GENIUS Kenny Everett 🙄❤️🏴
@imaKaiya Great video! 💯But there are two things that I would like to point out. #1 The name (Geraldo) is pronounced {HEraldo/HAIRaldo}. In Spanish the letter 'G' pronounced like 'C', a Spanish G is either “hard” or “soft”. Depending on what letter it's followed by. A hard G sounds like “go”, and a soft 'G' sounds like an English 'H' (which also sounds like a Spanish 'J'.
#2 ''John Denver'' was considered more [folk soft rock, pop] then Country & Western. In fact it wasn't until the mid-to-late 1970s that Country radio stations began playing his songs. And it was usually only a select few.
6:10 is a watermill not a castle though, Mapledurham Watermill
The building in the background of the first Black Sabbath album cover is NOT a "castle." It's the Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire, England. Yeeesh.
I had Stryper albums in the front of my vinyl stack. When I listened to Slayer, Metallica, or DRI My parents would bust into my room and I just passed it off(or attempted too )as Christian Metal.
I remember the satanic panic of the 1980s as being a scary but also surreal time, apart from worrying if your own scene is goinh to be the next one dragged, kicking and screaming, into the court of moral outrage where a bunch of nylon wearing people were determined to relive the good old days of the witch trials like those of the self named 'Witch finder general' or what went on in Salem
These strange people really did believe in a cabal of Harry Potter like magicians and their talking animals that would fly children down to rituals around the country where a child would usually get sacrificed, by their teachers.
The fact that none of these supposed ritual victims ever disappeared from the school roles or from being seen in public later on made no difference, "they must be look-a-like demons" would be their excuse. There was never logic or common sense only excuses and false witness for every answer.
Dangerous people.
Don't forget about Coven! They were doing openly satanic rock before Sabbath and had the first recorded black mass ritual. However, Black Sabbath's debut album preceded Coven's by a few months and the rest is history.
This is great would you be able to do another one the hysteria against goths that happened in the late 90s early 2000s?
@Ichijou_Matsomoku308 all I remember from what I've watched was goths getting blamed for columbine and them getting attacked because of it and aurelio Voltaire going on tv doing an important interview about it.
Does anyone remember those little comic books Christians would pass out while picketing metal concerts in the 80's? 😂
I burn those dumb things. I once put one in a toilet and peed on it.
it ws so bad tha new people moving into my area back in the days got pamphlets on "How to Recognize a Satanic Cult in Your Area."
When I was 14 (so 1998-99), my mother freaked out over my love of metal, so she brought me to a church to be exorcised. I brought an alkaselzer tab and a blood capsule with me, and soon after the evangelist started praying, I feigned a cough, slipping them into my mouth and bit down. I then dropped to the floor and recoted the "Invocation to Satan" from The Satanic Bible, in death metal inhales, with my eyes rolled back in my head.😂😂😂😂😂
BTW, LaVey AND Aquino "worked" on Manson, every time he got arrested, then had him released again. They hated the hippy movement, and were the architects of the Manson Family. Sadie Manson (Susan Atkins) was an agent. It was upon her arrival, that Manson went from being "Jesus" to being "Satan".... I have this from Diane (LaVey) Hegarty.
I could tell you some tails..... and his name wasn't "Anthony", in was Anton, though his friends did call him Tony. Coincidentally, she told me my humor reminded her of his.
Ah do tell!!
14:05 corpse paint started in the 90s with black metal fans also black metal was a known fanbase who burnt down churches
Miss the days of flipping back records in the quest for a demonic message or connection.
I like the older style metal from the 70s and 80s. Most of the growly stuff where you can't even make out the lyrics I don't like, though there are a few songs that are ok.
Looking back ylou wonder how a band who wore giant crosses and wrote Christian themed lyrics from time to time was ever seen as "Satanic"
I was a teenager in the 80s and remember alot of this. I still like rock music especially metal. I always will. I actually hate the devil. I just always liked the music. But anyway this is a really good and thorough video. 👍
The Beatles back masking sounds like he’s actually saying “Turn me on, Desmond.”
Well done video! Thank you. But not a word about Venom, Bathory, Sodom, Possessed...?
You did a fantastic job! You were 100% correct about the media exploiting the conspiracy to get viewership. It happened all the time. If you don't mind a little constructive criticism, read on.
The first band to exploit the Satanic Panic in the same way the media did was a group called Venom. Venom clearly lacked the musical skill and talent that their predecessors had. Groups like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden had the highest proficiency of musical ability. Venom's singer could barely carry a tune. His vocals were very pitchy and were mostly just talking with grunts and screams. The guitars were absolutely saturated with way too much gain. But, the guitars had to be dialed in that way. Otherwise you would hear just how terrible the playing was. Regardless, Venom was getting exposure on day time talk shows and religious right programming. So much in fact it was the equivalent of getting backed by a major label in the music industry and getting your music played on the radio stations or MTV. Just like that, a band who normally would have zero chance, was relevant. So long as people simply believed you were in league with the Devil people were going to pay attention to your music. A formula that worked!
After this happened, a ton of copycat bands began to follow suit and use the same process to bypass the musical gatekeepers of metal. Vocals devolved into screaming “Cookie Monster” melodies for many of these bands. The guitars were typically of higher caliber than the Vocals. But, in many cases, the guitars were just as bad as the vocals. Using either too much gain or spending way too much energy focusing on lengthy “shreddy” leadwork that would get old fast. This is the origin of how some metal vocals became gurgling screams. It wasn’t a “style”. These guys just couldn’t sing. Young people listening to these bands would later hold these screams and grunts in the highest regard. As if these guys are somehow playing with the musical mastery of a classical musical maestro in an orchestra. The young people upholding these “vocal values” are certainly far more talented than the original guys were. They have done some interesting things with it. Interjecting creativity and musical approaches that make things far more interesting..
That is the story how the Satanic Panic literally impacted the sound of some metal music.
Pink Floyd made an intentional secret message in Empty Spaces to troll people. All it said, "congratulations, you discovered the secret message".
I mean, I was raised with Soundgarden and Type O Negative, and my mother thought THEY were satanic
Believe, is a structure, ... whatever you want to create, you have to destroy something first
The upside-down cross, or the inverted cross, is a symbol with a long history and, in modern times, divergent meanings. As its name implies, an upside-down cross is simply a Latin cross turned so that the crosspiece is closer to the bottom than the top. A person hanging on such a cross would be positioned head-downwards.
For centuries, the inverted cross was considered a Christian symbol, based on an ancient tradition that the apostle Peter was crucified upside down. One version of the story says that Peter, facing martyrdom by crucifixion, requested that his cross be inverted because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. The upside-down cross, sometimes called the Cross of St. Peter or the Petrine cross, thus became a symbol of humility. The inverted cross is sometimes associated with the pope, who Catholics believe can trace his authority back to Peter. Artwork featuring the Petrine cross may contain an overlay of the “keys of heaven,” based on Matthew 16:19.
Recently, however, it is common for the upside-down cross to be used as a symbol of atheism, humanism, and the occult. Several black metal bands use an inverted cross to call attention to their supposed devotion to Satan. Upside-down crosses appear in horror movies such as The Omen and The Conjuring as a signal of demonic activity. The symbol crops up in tattoos, on pendants, and as a logo on t-shirts. Sometimes, it is accompanied by statements such as “Believe in Yourself,” “There Is No God,” “Black Mass,” or “Not Transformed.” In these contexts, the obvious intent of the inverted cross is to declare an opposition to Christianity. Turning the cross upside down becomes a means of denying the truth of Christ and mocking His sacrifice.
So, what is the meaning of an upside-down cross? It depends on the context. When the symbol is used in a church setting, it is most likely a reference to Peter and the manner of his death. In other contexts the inverted cross is often an anti-Christian symbol. In our fallen world, holiness is often mocked and what is good and pure is twisted by the “god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4). The cross, a symbol of Christ, is turned upside down to become a symbol of the devil.
Really good video! Learned so much as I also did not grow up during the panic. I am a little sad you didn't bring up black metal but then again, that'll be a whole video on itself. Subbed!
51. Not even sure if I lived through it. lol. But I know the stereotyping never went away.
rip chuck
12:29 what band or song is that( music solo in background)
Although I was not into metal until the 90’s, I was born in the 70’s and lived through the satanic panic. I always knew it was ridiculous and my parents could care less about those kinds of things. I went to Catholic school, but being in the suburbs of a large city, religion never was that intense and metal being something satanic was never brought up in school or church.
im not into satan never have been i dig the music and only look at most bands who use it as their visuals and topics as gimmicks and entertainment and nothing more
You forgot to mention that he painted the inside of the house all black, jimmy
Fun fact on Jimmy Page and Allister Crowley. Jimmy Page met the underground film maker Kenneth Anger in an occult shop un London. Anger was editing his new film (at the time) : Lucifer Rising. He even ask Page to do the soundtrack. Pace accept but he won't be able to finish the work. Frustrated, Anger will curse Page and Led Zeppelin (a lot of conspiracy theories Will emerge from this... the death of John Bonham, the death of Plant's son, etc.).
The music will be signed by one of the actor un the film : Bobby Beausoleil, a membre of the Manson familly Who recorded the music on jail.
I did a podcast about this true story... but in french.
These are the lyrics to a song on BLACK SABBATH's 1971 LP release MASTER OF REALITY
"AFTER FOREVER" (Words/music by John (Ozzy) Osbourne, T. Butler, T. Iommi, W. Ward)
Have you ever thought about your soul
Can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think
That when you are dead
You just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head
Or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name
That you read in the book
When you were in school?
When you think about death
Do you lose your breath
Or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the pope
On the end of a rope?
Do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth
Yes, I've seen the light
And I've changed my ways
And I'll be prepared
When you're lonely and scared
At the end of our days
Could it be you're afraid
Of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
That God is the only way to love
Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say that you may as well worship the sun?
I think it was true it was people like you
That crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had
Was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure
When your day is near
Say you don't believe
You had the chance
But you turned it down
Now you can't retrieve
Perhaps you'll think before you say
God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize
That He is the one
The only one who can save you now
From all this sin and hate
Or will you jeer at all you hear?
Yes, I think it's too late
i like the background solos goin on non stop haha next time include yngwie disciples of hell n slayer jihad power \m/
Remember when Alice Cooper had that really shocking shock rock song about how he is no longer as polite as he used to be? I'm amazed society survived that.
"No More Mr Nice Guy"
The interesting thing is that some of the nicest, kindest, sweetest and most gentle people I've ever met have been metal heads and horror fans. Yet the media of the 80s and 90s tried to convince people that these were the people to be scared of. I think now people are realizing that metal and horror are both good for relieving built up issues like anxiety, anger and depression without going out and doing violent or dangerous things. That's possibly why those genres attract people who are prone to those issues and why there have been a number of connected tragedies. No matter how good a record or a movie is, sometimes it's not enough to save someone's life. I can say from personal experience though that when I've been going through bouts of depression, heavy music and horror movies tend to help me get through it and I've spoken to several people who have similar experiences.
I’ve been to quite a few metal shows and yes everyone I have met at these shows are super sweet and bubbly.
METALLICA`s Fade to Black made me not want to commit suicide!
they simply created a culture where they could hide in plain site,,, and im a metal head from the eighties
satanic panic = "I don't like it/I don't understand it, so it has to be satanic".
no, it was actually about an underground p@3do ring of weird culty rich people the cultural aspect of it was purposefully overblown to make it seem like it's a crazy idea. it was to cover up for real people being abu$ed in a ritual way.
You know all entertainment is Masonic?

Oof. I lived through this. Got into metal by 1983 (age 10), parents accused me of being in cults and worshipping Satan and being a drug addict (I had literally never touched anything stronger than cough drops at the time) when I was in high school. Also lived in rural Upstate NY, so I was the one kid into death metal & industrial in 1987, so I had a handful of dedicated bullies, etc. Luckily I'm a relatively large guy and was able to defend myself well enough that I was eventually left alone, at least physically. I got attacked in public a couple times by the stereotype jock/preppie college guys in town a couple times as well. Y'know, all the hits. In a lot of ways, mostly involving being the weirdo in town and in my family, I had a "storybook" childhood. 😂
And yeah, Mike Love is an absolute traitor scumbag.
he Occult mprinting of Black Sabbath came from Tony Iommi, as Ozzy has stated several times in interviews. He was yes attracted to the Occult but Iommi was much more into that world.
I'm a bit younger than you but I had some of the same experiences. In high school, there was a clique of us. All us slacker, stoner types hung out with each other. I eventually got into the Dead and started wearing a lot of tie dye. Still do, Lol. But as an adult I spent a year in this very small town and I was basically the town "hippy". No one really liked me. I'd try to talk to people at the one little local bar but no one wanted to have anything to do with me. It was weird to me because, people generally like me. I'm a very nice person. Lol. Ever since I've been drawn to more populated areas.
You were seduced by Lucifer into the dark side. You were a disappointment to your family. You were an evil child.
Yeah, f@ck mike love!!
I’m so lucky I was a 90s kid with rocker parents. I saw the tail end and went to catholic school because that was the only private school option. I think it lasted longer in those environments. My parents listened to Ozzy, Dio, Alice Cooper, etc, and they reassured me ‘no, it’s not satanic. It’s like a watching a movie about wizards and demons and what not.’ They had their posters and albums got burned and thrown out. I could listen to what I wanted and I could play with Ouija Boards and role playing games, and I could watch movies and read books about fantasy stuff. I definitely heard from friends families and the school how many ridiculous things were ‘evil’ or ‘satanic.’ They said kid cartoons were satanic! It was crazy!
I’m a 90s kid who now has children of my own. My husband and I are both metalheads, but I also love a lot of music outside of metal, and my ex/father of my oldest child is a bassist in a thrash band. With that being said, mg oldest hates metal music and calls it the dying song and will cry if you put on almost anything metal including his dad’s own band. My middle child hates metal and will get mad when my music goes from Taylor Swift to anything metal and complain it hurts her ears. My youngest seems to not mind metal though.
You have awesome parents! Telling it how it is.
Ouija boards are a hoax, that's why I never got to play with them. Other than that, my parents were the same.
I know right???? 😂. I was born in 80, but really didn’t get into rock and metal until the early 90s. But hey, it was ok because mom owned Judas Priest and Black Sabbath albums, which is **how** I got into them hahaha.
Catholics are not Christians it's devil's religion . Check out Robert breaker
