- I'm starting strawflower from seed for my cut flower garden. Strawflower is a wonderful cut flower both fresh and dried. The seed should be surface sown. 70-75 degrees F for germination. Most websites say they germinate in 7-10 days. I often see them up in 3 days.
Then I'm pulling three amaryllis bulbs out of dormancy that never went outside this summer. Thanks to The Suburban Gardening Couple on Instagram who shared this working for them! - / suburban.gardening.couple

Dear Danielle, I added “dear” because your video content is so helpful and presented in the loviest manner. During these last days of winter, you are such a joy to wake up to! Hope you have fun with the amaryllis experiment. I grew Strawflowers for the first time last year and using the cool flower method was able to set them out much earlier than normal. They did great, in fact I cut them down once and got another flush of blooms before frost. I grew Swiss Giants and thought that the blooms would be large but the stems were very tall and blooms about average size. But loved all of the colors.Grace is always so cute!
I loved the experiments going on with amaryllis! And I'm so with you with the need for floral therapy this time of year. On my birthday, my hubby always takes me to a conservatory for a garden walk. My request. This year we went to our favorite near Ann Arbor--they have 3 rooms--one is the tropical room, another is a temperate rain forest, and the third is the desert. The tropical one is my favorite--with flowers, vines, trees, a huge indoor fountain, and a waterfall. Those hellebores and panses looked so lovely in your friend's conservatory!
since I started putting my Amaryllis outside in the summer and fertilizing them regularly, plus doing the "down time" - my bulbs have gotten larger, and rebloom consistently (15 bulbs of different kinds)
Hi Danielle It always seems strange to me that in USA you have your amaryllis in the cold weather. Here in Qld Australia they bloom between November and December. 😮 Thank you for all of your wonderful videos 😊. I adore Grace too! She’s so cute. 😊
I have had amazing success with the inexpensive seeds from the local Dollar General, two packets for $1 and they grow like crazy. I need to relate that to my viewers too more so they know they don't have to buy expensive seeds to have a beautiful garden. I often encourage seed starting for those on a tight budget and being able to save $$$ on seeds is a winning move. I did lousy last year with Strawflower but my cousin is giving me all her seeds as she was unhappy with the ones she grew so I will give it another go.

Strawflowers are new for me in Central Texas 8b. I think I.grew them once in New Orleans though, but then gardening there was easy. I cannot wait to have them for flower arrangements later this year.

Love your videos! I just brought two of my three year old amaryllis up from the basement about a week ago and they are getting ready to bloom! I can’t believe the leaves on your Flamingo Dancer amaryllis! That one should definitely rebloom next year! I love straw flowers. I am going to have to look at my dollar store for roam seeds. Great tip! Seeds are getting so expensive. I just placed three seed orders and some of the seed packets were almost $7! Others were around $5! That’s outrageous! And some only had 15 pelleted seeds inside😩

I'm all about the dollar store seeds!! I cringe when so many pay all this extra money with Johnny's lol also, I feel your pain on the fall sown seedlings. Way to much rain an snow here as well. Area I have my love in a mist all rotted and went away😥 luckily every thing else look fine🙂

I love strawflowers. I have yellow ones in my front yard every year, and nothing bothers them. I may try planting some seed and see what happens.

Good news for you: I have Red Lion amaryllis, blooming for the second year, with two flowerstalks😊 In total 6/6 of my amaryllis bulbs are flowering for the second year, only one with just one stalk, the others all have two 😊 I am planning to get a good picture and send it to you this week. @@NorthlawnFlowerFarm No I didn't put them outside, they were inside in their small pots all year along. They were in a south - west facing window though, so plenty of sun and warmth. I gave them some liquid fertilizer, roughly every two weeks, same as for my annual flowers in pots outside. 😊
Strawflower seed is super easy to save too.

Hello Danielle! I have to ask - are the strawflowers in the pics at the end of your video from the dollar store seed? (I know they are from another season). I love the colors! I'm going to do a lot of mixed color seed packs this year as well. Some varieties and colors are hard to find in specific colors. Might as well enjoy the surprise!!!
Just bought an older home. It's littered with surprise lilies(since you're talking about amaryllis) I know the foliage very well. I spotted them and was excited. I also need to move them because they're in the wrong place in the landscape. They're right at the foundation of the house which I'm not crazy about. And we're totally redoing the fence and they're all along the fence. Anyways, have you ever seen people using the flowers for arrangements?

Hi Jacqueline. They will be under lights every day until I start hardening them off in mid March. Your date may be different depending on your last frost. I start putting them out 6 weeks before the last frost after a week of hardening off. I run the lights for 14 hours each day. You can thin them anytime you like by snipping out unnecessary seedlings. I hope that helps!

Danielle, wanted to quickly also mention that I saw an article in the Sunday paper called "Where have all the flowers gone?" which was an article copied from the New York Times. If you google that title and New York Times it should come up. As you will see it is another discussion about expected shortages of flowers for the floral industry. It might be of interest to you and any of your viewers who are flower farmers and know what shortages may occur in the floral industry to see if you can help locally with the need.

I saw in another video that you plant your cool flowers out around March 17, or 6 weeks before your last frost. Let’s imagine that one of the seed packets says that the seed should be started 8 weeks before last frost. Do you then sow it indoors 8 weeks before your planting date of March 17?
I’ve seen milk jugs in your beds in some videos. I’m curious if they are for winter sowing, and if so, which flowers do you sow using that method?
I kept all of mine indoors. Stopped watering in August and then move them to the basement in September and I only had one out of nine re-bloom this year 😕

Hi Danielle! I was laughing at your dog and the cardboard! Cutie. I always leave the empty tp roll on the back of the toilet for our pup and he gets so excited when he thinks "he stole it" and comes tease us with it. I'm growing strawflower for the first time this year! I'm excited about it. They were seeds an Instagram friend shared with me. I also have luck with dollar tree seeds, and they have strawflower again in my area. I didn't buy strawflower from DT yet, but have tried a number of other annual seeds from there with success. Question, if you have a minute to reply. I'm interested in trying fever few after watching one of your recent vids. I'm following your instructions on starting plants from seeds, even buying heat mats. I never had such success. I had some germination in 2 days! but now things look a little leggy, or a lotta leggy. And I have 20 tiny snapdragons in each cell. What should I do? Do I need to start over?
Hi Samara! Are they under lights? Are they flourescent lights? Are the lights two inches from the leaf canopy? It may seen really close but 2 inches with flourescent lights is ideal. You can snip out extra seedlings leaving just one or two per cell.. Please feel free to send me a picture of IG if it's helpful.
As you know I love your videos. Grace was cracking me up, but I think she just needs more exercise. You probably already know that! Do you have time to take her on some long walks? Hi, Danielle. I have a question for you that has nothing to do with this video. I apologize for that. I have a concern about one of my amaryllis plants. It has been doing beautifully this season and had a bloom stalk with 5 or 6 gorgeous flowers that bloomed for several weeks. In the meantime, another bloom stalk started to develop with a good-size bud. However, when it was just a couple inches tall, it started to turn yellowish with brown around the edges. It looked like it was drying up. At the same time, one of the leaves turned completely yellow. There is also some red at the bottom of a couple of the leaves, and the leaves are turning brown and rough to the touch along the edges. The soil is not wet. I put my finger down into it a couple of inches, and it is dry. Today is watering day, however, so I expect it to be dry. I’ve been watering all my amaryllis the same, and they are all doing well so far except this one. The bulb I’m referring to is in a pot with 2 other bulbs, so I’m concerned about what I should do. This doesn’t seem normal. Do you have any suggestions?
Hi friend! It's hard to say for sure but my first thought is possibly red blotch or mosaic virus. Perhaps look into those and see what you think. I had red blotch a few years back and decided to toss that bulb.
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarm Thanks, Danielle.. I will definitely research red blotch. Unfortunately, it looks like the other bulbs in the pot, all the same variety and purchased at the same time, look similar to the bulb I described.
Danielle, I planted ammi in fall for the first time, the plants grew into big dark green clumps but then they got eaten quite a bit by rabbits or voles. It was so disappointing but there are still some small plants left and I’m hoping they’ll recover. We did have some snow, ice and temps to the high teens and they survived uncovered here in 7b. Maybe animal browse is what happened to yours?
Thanks for that information Karen! Definitely a possibility! After the last ice storm the foliage went brown on me. I've never seen that happen before with a cool flower! Did your Ammi foliage go brown?
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarm I don’t think so...I just looked through photos and notes and don’t remember that happening. I planted late October then in early Dec noted the first animal damage. The cold, ice and snow came in Jan and Feb. I’m in Cary, NC. The animals haven’t stopped despite rabbit spray and a loose netting. They did look a little wilty after the really cold nights but the animals ate most of the exterior leaves. The crowns are still there so maybe that’s why they did ok? I bet yours will come back, the roots are underground and should be ok!!
I am new to your channel. Where are located (zone)? I’ve always loved strawflower…where can I get some and will they grow in my area, Ft. Worth, TX (zone 8). Our nurseries do not carry many things I’m interested in. I am ordering things I want to try, like violets and alstromeria.
Hello! I am in 6b, Pennsylvania. I believe you can grow starflower in zone 8. You can find at Johnny's, Geo, Rorhers, and Harris. A local seed store may have the best prices!
Last year after blooming I left my amaryllis bulb outside on my deck forgot about it did not even water it and it is blooming now yah…..

@@Littlebitesofjoy Hi, I hope Danielle doesn't mind me jumping in here to let you know something. It isn't your Zone that determines when you plant or start them, it is the time from your last frost date, which can vary even within your Zone. For instance, I am in California, Zone 8 but so is Dallas Texas, my last frost date is the end of May but in Dallas, Texas it is early March. So find out your last frost date and backtrack from there.
