I have one of those motors, and I have been using it for years on my pontoon boat. I plumbed in a secondary gas tank on mine and it draws the gas in as I go so there is never a need to stop and fuel. That was the biggest pain ever since the tank on the motor is tiny. I have a video about it on my channel, however, it is in Russian. If you would like I can make a video about how I made up a secondary jerry can gas tank. There is no electricity involved it just works on suction, and it works awesome!!
I’ve always said to myself “ Who buys these things”... My questions has been answered! The smirk on your face during the 1st launch was “Priceless” “Liked and subscribed” thanks for the post
Aluminum boat the buttered backups but if you had a little homemade driver bolt have been nice little trunk trying to get to your spot motor. No water skiing.
I put this exact same motor on my kayak mounted between the outrigger and the kayak. I cut shortened and welded the shaft around 7'' shorter as it was way to long for what I needed. I also put a custom made exhaust extension that points the exhaust out and away from your ears, as you mentioned it is damn noisy. Half of the trouble with this little motor is, the plastic propeller flexes, you can upgrade the propeller to a cast aluminium one for under $30.00 and you will get a little more speed, around 15 kls ph top speed. The motor is very reliable but sucks a lot of juice, on a calm day out in the kayak I will only get around two kilometers out of a tank. This little motor is great for a kayak as it's light, a proper 2 to 4hp outboard motor is way to heavy for my kayak and this no brand is 5 times cheaper.
Whipper snipper is a new one for me. I've heard weed wacker or weed whipper. I've always been partial to edge trimmer, but I'm adopting Whipper sniper from now on.
That's the same engine/clutch assembly I have on my post hole auger and it has worked flawlessly for 10 years. Just run the gas out of it at the end of the season so the carb doesn't get gummy.
Mark Osborne - Well said. I would just had a small detail that I never miss. When finishing the gas and engine stopping squirt some WD40 or similar into the intake. Next season had gas and enjoy. :-)
Yep , you got that right . Just spent half a day cleaning out my Mariner outboard (1970's) carb after leaving it for 10 months. The old fuel had eaten into the fuel bowl and left a coating of AL oxide , god only knows what they're sticking in fuel these days .
Just as a curiosity. A few hours ago I took the dust and spider webs from my preferred toy. A 50cc moped that haven't been started since last year (Summer). Thankfully for me I follow my own advise. I simply open the fuel petcock shake it a bit to start the fuel flow. After a couple of kicks there she was back to all it's 50cc 2 stroke glory. The ritual never failed in this past 3 years. BTW the mix has 2 stroke synthetic other than that it's the fuel from last year. ;-)
I opted for the 2 stroke wet version because the exhaust goes down under the waterline so it’s significantly quieter.. not fast by any means but it’ll do the job
For that sort of money you can’t really condemn that little out board and if your happy with it then fair enough , but I would sooner go for a decent seagull silver century ,I know that they are an old motor now but the spares are still readily available and looked after they will last for years
As far as the choke, [ | ] would be open, [ -- ] would be closed. Close it to start the engine cold, open it after a minute or two. I do miss AUS, I was stationed on the RAAF base in Darwin, NT when I was in the USMC back in '93. Loved it there.
Can see a good reason for the speed your able to obtain, I think it has alot more to do with your aerodynamic hair cut. I'm certain should you of removed you sunnys you would gain more speed. Over all great presentation, definitely good value for money.
I see a design flaw already the exhaust is pointing straight up in the Run position so if you're caught in the rain or you leave it outside in the rain your exhaust will fill with water into your piston you get the idea.
of course this is a large weed whacker motor, with a bicycle twist grip control, and an OB lower unit. Tanaka made an even smaller OB ( 30 cc) using what was then a bicycle motor ( bike bug) in the 70's. The noise is opressive.. but it works.
I have a 3hp long-tail version of this waiting for me to weld up a boat from three 44g drums. As you say, time will tell. If I need more power, I'll mount two 3hp long-tails in parallel.😂
I have a eBay purchase 4 stroke, 1.5HP Petrol Power Outboard Engine and mounted on my kayak. Seller says 20km/h with 3 people... I must weight more than 5 people because my kayak was going at 8km/h on full throtle. I use watersnake 24lb with 50ah lithium battery now and it travells at 6km/h. much more peacefull.
Good honest clear review you pays your money and takes your choice Noisy whipper but very cheap price Or pay lot more for dearer heavier pukka outboard half way house would be honda 2.3hp light noisy ish Light but hi price but easy to lift to from tender to mothership..
1.) You never rev brand new engine. It needs at least 10 minutes of working on idle. After that you usually need to break in engine for 8-10 hours. 2.) You don't rev engine without any load !
I've ordered one-delivery awaited. I purchased this motor new, this is not a salt water motor to begin with, a week after having it the throttle cable broke, one of the mounting brackets broke and the exhaust came loose after four hours of use.
I was looking at the 1.5 HP 4 stroke Engine from the same people for the extra $50 although it says it doesn't go as fast I think it will be good for the noise level and less using of fuel. I'm going to make a mount for my kayak hopefully it is not a regretful buy.
I have a Viking nemo, yes it adds some weight but i just lean to one side. It’s not that bad it only weighs like 9kg. I would get the 4 stroke if you are getting one.
hello simon, Connect a pipe (45° copper pipe) to the exhaust outlet and lower it into the water behind the propeller (15cm). exhaust sound decreases (50%)
The biggest problem with this motor is the noise (it's loud - too loud for noise restricted areas) and low performance versus price. Top speed, not the slower continuous cruising speed, averages about 3mph - about as fast as the typical person walks. Could take a long time to cross that lake or travel that river.
Thanks for posting this, I've been looking for a small setup for my canoe, and I've seen the lower ends on sale for around 58$ and I've definitely got a trimmer engine waiting. Seems like for me it'd be a perfect fit, thanks!

Very nice ... but can you add another crop to go back? A brass tube should be placed in the form of an elbow in the exhaust area to protect your face from the heat and smoke. Very nice, my hands. I hope to get this but I am now in Saudi Arabia.

how hard is it to replace the propeller and are they readily available, is there a sheer pin or dose it rely on the clutch as a safety,
