- New 'anniversary' edition (in HD and with improved audio) of Hayley Westenra 海莉 ヘイリー singing at the National Memorial Day Concert 2011 in Washington DC. Pie Jesu is from Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Requiem' and this live broadcast was by PBS TV station Thirteen.
Sung as part of a tribute to Richard Githens who died in the Vietnam War, in the presence of his daughter Michelle Githens-Baugh who is shown in the video. To read Michelle's moving comments about this tribute, visit the HWI website, it is at the foot of the following page:

This is an incredible performance. I have listened to many versions of Pie Jesu over the years and this ranks among the very top.
Hayley Westenra is clearly pitch perfect here and her Soprano range is absolutely true. She is blessed with an abundance of natural talent and deserves to be at the very top. Her version of I Dreamed A Dream is also well worth a listen.
Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote this in memory of his father in 1982. He combined the traditional Pie Jesu text with that of the Agnus Dei (translation below)

Hayley has no peer for her pure vocal tone. It's awe inspiring and beautiful.
I love is aria a lot, Pie Jesu was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, this piece that he wrote was in memory of the fallen in Northern, Ireland.
For those who are critical of Hayley's performance, here is some context. The 19 minutes Vietnam War segment of the National Memorial Concert, ending with Hayley and this Pie Jesu, is available here: ua-cam.com/video/D8-rPXXtUvo/v-deo.html . It is a highly emotional tribute to a soldier who died in that war and whose then baby daughter Michelle, is in the front row of the audience and is shown. Her story had many people in tears, including actress A J Cook while she was portraying the part of Michelle. Hayley must have been emotionally affected too, it was perhaps one of her two most difficult performances ever (the other being the Christchurch Earthquake Memorial concert). To understand the context, you really have to watch that video all the way through, and few people will get through it with no tears.

Voices do mature and in Hayley's case... THAT happened..
She's also been having vocal training so her technique makes her voice sound more compact, hence the "it is different"..
Seriously, singers like her can't sing exactly the same song as they grow older.. It changes, That's part of the beauty 🙂

Hayley was at times brilliant and moving in this piece, and at other times- a bit tentative. I am familiar enough with Miss W. to know that she can and has done a bit better. That being said, this is still better than most soprano soloists would/could do.
I wish she would sing this again, it is interesting to hear her voice and tambor change as she has aged and matures into the woman she is here, and the woman she is now.
A performance that gets even better with every hearing. The ever so slight break in her voice makes this all the more moving.

I love Hayley’s singing but even better, I met my beautiful girlfriend Tricia through watching Hayley singing Qaunta qaulia on UA-cam.
I remember playing Quanta Qualia for a friend and he couldn't believe a human was singing it.
Her voice is so much lower and more mellow now but with some of her music, the versions when she was under 18 are, for me, more enjoyable. Don't get me wrong, but she kicked Sarah Brightman's butt with the other version in China when she was 15. I don't usually notice this much difference in a female singers voice within such a few years but this is a very different, and mature, Haley.
The version from when she was 15 is from her preformance in Auckland, New Zealand, not China. But I do agree, I prefer her younger version as well.

Tears from her first note. I've seen her sing this at age 15, (which I personally think was better but that's just me,) and the only comparable performance is Celtic Woman with Chloe Agnew. The live version is here on youtube, if you like this performance, I think you'll also like that. This piece, if well-sung, is so very moving, especially to the more-sensitive souls amongst us. And Hayley does sing this so incredibly well.
Definitely better when she was 15.

her younger more fragile version was a big success, and years are training improved her vibrato but flattened her resonance , not a bad performance but she needs to learn to let it go in front of crowds like this one

Critics are entitled to their point of view. But i would have thought sensitivity was a more appropriate response here, given the nature of the occasion. Well for me it would be anyway. Was Haleys performance that bad? I don't think so. Minor blemishes at most. And what a pathetic example of a total lack of EMPATHY behind the deliberately derisive reference to a so called 'grieving grandma'. What do we take from such a comment? That she isn't entitled to any dignity in her sadness? YEAH! REAL HUMAN COMPASSION ON DISPLAY THERE! - FOR SURE!!
