Thanks so much for this. I have started sending letters again so I just wrote the entire thing on the inside of the envelope paper and sent it that way. I even used some of the folds as area dividers per say and put different things in different sections (letter, recipe, Easter wishes, etc) and sealed it all up with some washi tape and plopped it in the mail. My recipient LOVED it! Thanks for the post!

The closest I ever came to doing origami was making my own envelopes. I made them as a cure for my own boredom as a High School kid. I used ordinary 8x11 printing paper along with scissors, and scotch tape. If I did it your way, I would need to convert centimeters to inches. 🙂

I used 9x12 inch paper and the final product perfectly fit a check. Just what I needed it for, for dropping off rent. Woo!

    Hi Heather
I have made several envelopes of various sizes from you, but not this one yet.
They sell colored gift papers here. It's a roll - 60 cm to 2 meters, so I'd try it.
    Have a nice day.

Nah no post, just made a booklet card for dads birthday, I only know how to make small envelopes and I need a big one for the booklet card I mentioned.
I'm making this with 2 a4s stuck together.
    Okay not big enough... I'll do 4 a4s ^_^
Thanks, your video helps a lot!
The 4 a4s worked, thanks to your video ^_^

This did not work for a 7x10 inch card. I used a 20x21 inch sheet of paper. The top flap didn’t even fold over to close the envelope.

I greatly appreciate the explaining of how to make an envelope of a desired size. Most origami envelope tutorials simply tell you how to fold and the result is just whatever size your paper folds up to be. Thank you for the added information!

Years ago I made a homemade Dickensian Christmas card. However, without forethought I neglected to consider the envelope size, which was difficult to find. However, with the dimension ratio here, I think my assistant will be able to fold me a custom-made envelope to send to Ireland this month. These videos are excellent instruction, and you have a very pleasant speaking voice.

Ignore the hate. I thought you explained it pretty well. If you didn't talk at all, people would complain. You're talking "a lot" to explain to people and they just aren't grateful. You explained very well. Guess that's why this is a tutorial. Also, there's a mute button folks, learn how to use it. (And I don't mean for the video)

  • @margaretm3923

Very nice envelope, and very well explained. I made a small version to try it out and it works very well. The only problem is that it takes a lot of paper. I make regular envelopes with one sheet of paper or card stock 81/2" by 11". I guess this would be good for special envelopes, but too expensive for making lots of them. Thanks for the tutorial.........I will make this again for special cards.

Question. Are these dimensions for the paper after its folded? should I fold my letter first, measure it then based off of the folded letter do my math for the envelope? how do I know how big of paper to start with for the unfolded envelope?

This works rely well! I have made a few, but I don't think the ratios she gave work very well. I think those only work if you are making an envelope with the same ratios as a normal one, but a different size. I have tried to make one for a birthday card, and the shape always comes out about the same. Great video though.

I think what she actually means by the ratios when sizing your paper is 37cm -> 18.5cm is a ratio of 1:2, not 1 half which is 1.5 which is what she says in the video. The same for the other ratio, 28.5cm -> 9.5cm is a ratio of 1:3, not 1 third which is 1.3.
