Is Yama no Susume A Strictly Better Yuru Camp Δ?

  • "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" seems like it would be an apt descriptor at first. But if you just take a quick look at the so-called genre, you never really know what you're getting yourself into. One day you could be watching someone discover passion in their life ala K-On!, and the next you could be watching a team of spies that just happen to be cute girls (Release the Spyce/Princess Principal).
Yama no Susume and Yuru Camp seem similar on the surface. But only on the surface. Which one do you prefer?

I think what bugs me the most about Yuru Camp and Yama no Susume being so often put together is that in key aspects of the narrative they are polar opposites. Yuru Camp is about respecting boundaries, Yama no Susume is (mostly) about getting rid of them. To a point this is also the reason why YC is more of my preference, it handles introversion and solitude in a more constructive and respectful way, while YnS chooses a more conventional way of help and support to push a character out of a situation that is clearly framed as bad.
There's also the issue that YnS is more of a character drama than YC, which is why I even struggle to fully consider it an iyashikei, at least not a "pure" one, right from the beginning. There's a lot of conflict and stakes in it, and it constantly reminds of the ugliest aspects of as you said, the hobby, but also the interrelations. Aoi and Hinata argue a lot and there are plenty of moments of tension and clash throughout. It doesn't treat friendship as a safe space, and this is quite different from the norm in many cute girls doing stuff shows, and it feels refreshing that way.
To a point as well, the hobby is not framed in the same way, and not only due to the negatives. In YC the characters are a lot more involved with camping and its intricacies, they are constantly pushing to learn new stuff and are basically excited to try everything. In YnS you don't see this amount of enthusiasm towards hiking and at some points it's like they don't have anything better to do, and that's why some of my least favorite episodes or scenes have to do with its procedural aspects like buying gear or explaining stuff. I think YnS works better at the friendship and character dynamics side.
In short, they are different, at some points even opposites. Each with their own appeal. I'm far more into what YC does, but the latest season of YnS was a worthy contender and the show grows on me the more I watch, and its character animation in particular is amazing.

@@mmmoendo Unfair in what sense? They are different, fundamentally. Kaede is literally the only one in the group who consistently gets that extra bit of interest in the hobby, beyond the pure and raw experience of hiking. In YC every character spends free time reading camping magazines, buying gear and looking at catalogues, searching and reading outdoors tips and etc. Like daily reminder that Ena's first post-camping reaction is buying a specific magazine and that is how we get to understand that she is interested in the hobby and wants to push it further.
Hinata and Aoi love hiking, where did I say they didn't. They definitely do not love buying stuff or reading tons of info every day about their hobby, and that is how the series often frames its most procedural aspects instead of the rewarding ones: as necessary steps. It's simply a different approach from YC where gathering every piece and bit of info and material is a hobby in itself. The girls get excited when they go shopping, like absurdly excited. They get hooked reading magazines, thinking about the stuff they'll buy and use. Nowhere I am saying that hiking is a diversion (from what?) in YnS, I'm saying that the attachment to the least climactic aspects of it is not the same.

@@mmmoendo "Aoi and Rin are completely different characters" yeah that point is clear. Literally everything I posted comparing both characters amounts to this, so I don't know what is your point here.
Yama no Susume is not about introversion and solitude? Aoi is introverted. She is very, extremely introverted. Introversion doesn't just appear always as something benign and Aoi is like that due to past events that lead to social anxiety and fear. This is precisely how YnS frames the character trait as something that needs handling and fixing, because it stems from negative experiences that need to be healed or improved.
The reason I enjoy Rin's type more than Aoi's type of introversion as a source of narrative is because there's so many examples of the latter. Some more justified than others, but opening up is more often than not framed as something always inequivocally better than spending time alone. There's also plenty of social constructs and urges aimed towards fighting introversion.
And I love how Yama no Susume frames and executes it. Literally one of my favorite parts of the series and certainly its most healing aspect to me. But.
Whatever, sorry that I'm answering this late but among the pile of useless UA-cam recs I get I didn't read your notification, if it was ever sent at all xD

    • @SpaRkofFiRe
      @SpaRkofFiRe 4 роки тому +9

Sorry I'm late to this conversation, and I pretty much agree with most of your comment except for this one bit
"In YnS you don't see this amount of enthusiasm towards hiking and at some points it's like they don't have anything better to do"
and later you said "They definitely do not love buying stuff or reading tons of info every day about their hobby, and that is how the series often frames its most procedural aspects instead of the rewarding ones: as necessary steps."
I'd like to hear some examples of this because these characters have always been excited about everything about their hobby, *including* the extra bits like reading magazines and buying gear. Aoi gets an actual part-time job for the first time, an endeavor that gave her a lot of anxiety at first, all for the sake of buying the more expensive climbing gear. Why would she put herself in that situation if she didn't love the specific act of buying gear? In season 3, we see Aoi buy some expensive climbing boots even though it was made clear to her just before that they weren't obligatory, just because she thought they looked cute. And in multiple occasions we see both Hinata and Aoi looking through hiking magazines to look for different mountains to climb, something they could easily just ask Kaede to do for them. They just wouldn't be spending this much time and money doing these extra things if they didn't love doing it.

As someone who has a bit of experience doing serious hikes/backpacking/mountain climbing I was expecting to enjoy Yama no Susume a lot more than Yuru camp, but it turned out to be the opposite. I really struggled to relate to the characters in yns but watching Rin in Yuru camp I had so many “she’s literally me!!!” moments. I absolutely adore Yuru camp’s portrayal of introversion, it’s not something you see in a lot of anime and it’s super refreshing. The only moments I really enjoyed in yama no susume were the climbing scenes.
Also Yuru camp has given me some BOMB ass recipes… I made that tomato yakisoba stuff from the newest season and it’s so good oml

Seeing Yama no Susume's 3rd season recently, I have to say the 'friendship' and character growth part of the series is also excellent, especially how conflicts between Aoi and Hinata play out and how both of these contrasting characters think and developed over the course of the series (though I guess Hinata didn't change that much).
Yuru Camp on the other hand, besides its fantastic portrayal and acceptance of introvertism and outrovertism, just has this extremely comfy and relaxing atmosphere, this amusing humor and that kiss-ass soundtrack. Frigging brilliant show.
So yeah, both are great shows.

This video raises a very important point that I appreciate from my favorite, super positive youtuber. I think for most shows, even those that are very similar on a surface level, the small differences in the details are very important. Every person has unique tastes, and you can't rely on another persons opinion, to judge whether a show is going to be right for you or not.
The shows that most exemplify this for me are K-On, BanG Dream, and Love Live. All of which I watched within two years of each other, in that order.
For me, only BanG Dream truly hooked me into the franchise and characters. I've seen it beginning to end three times now, with plans to rewatch it again all in one go this weekend. Not to say I didn't enjoy the other two, and I have a great deal of respect for K-On for what it did for CGDCT. So naturally, it pains me greatly whenever I hear people write BanG Dream as a boring, unoriginal story with nothing special to it. I'm sure plenty of people have that opinion, but plenty of people also DON'T have that opinion. For me, it's an extremely relatable and unique work, and I get more out of it with every watch. I seethe at the thought of people who haven't even watched all of the first episode, let alone to completion when they call it an "Off-brand K-On" or "On-brand Love Live", or say it "falls flat on it's face". And I'm just made sad by the people who did watch it all the way through and weren't able to connect with it the way I did.
And what pains me the most is how many people will judge it without ever giving it a chance, or go into it without a clear head, wanting to be proven in their assumptions that it's "Just a knock off K-On".

I'd say Yuru Camp is objectively better. Better pacing, better characters, and it has more respect people's boundaries. But I still persobally enjoy Yama no Susume more because I am more attracted to mountain hiking than winter camping. So even if one show is objectively better, it may not be more enjoyable since that's mostly subjective

Some of the anime I enjoyed the most were probably more enjoyable because I didn't know what I was getting into. Madoka Magica looked like something in which Madoka would overcome a few normal challenges after becoming a Mahou Shoujo. Made in Abyss's cover art made it look like an anime aimed at kids. I somehow went into Kemono Friends thinking that this would be about some animal-girls helping a lost human girl find her parents in an otherwise ordinary safari park, and that it was also just for kids (and sure, it is actually suitable for kids).

I really liked both shows, but I definitely favor Yuru Camp and I have to be honest on one matter: I found Aoi and Hinata's fighting every two episodes and bickering over nothing extremely annoying and useless. Far from finding it useful for character development, the impression that they give me is that they can just barely stand each other and are only "forced" to stick together in this endless loop of petty remarks (real or made up in their own minds) and fights because of the "childhood friends" stuff. As far as chemistry between an indoors introvert and an outdoors extrovert goes, I think that the girls from Houkago Teibou Nisshi are far more likable and better matched.

I'm not entirely sure why that's such a big problem; in my opinion, it's realistic for 2 people who call themselves friends to not always get along. The first couple of episodes pretty well establish that the 2 girls were friends as children and that they want to reconnect after being separated for several years; the fact that they have contrasting personalities is because they didn't continue to stay friends, and wound up developing different interests as a result, I'd say
