Yep, best Miracle Mile ever in terms of it being the best race between two horses. The single best performance will always be Mount Eden's win in the 60's. Still blows my mind when I see how much better he was than anyone else.
I can see you were a fan of Vin Knight, but Bag Limit never won a Miracle Mile and in fact never contested a Miracle Mile. The Harold Park race you were thinking of when Bag Limit sat 3 wide the trip and still won was I believe the "John Player Special Cup" in Aug 1986 over a gruelling 2700m.
This machine can sit, sprint , stay, just about do anything on a race track popular alm what a freak of nature.the way he won the winfield cup at moonee valley no blacks a fake or smoken up or christian cullens or mt eden pure steel can do what he did on a race track you have to separate gentleman from the boys
all4pharlap i am so vinny knight's cousin ask anyone in new zealand and aussie who the knight family is and they will tell you one of the biggest families in harness racing.
bgardiner2000 - There is no speculation at all that they were using EPO, just speculation that you have invented. EPO only came to light in horse racing in Australia in the early 1990's, all of the horses you have stated below, Bag Limit, Popular Alm, Almeta Boy, Jane Ellen, Rockleigh Victory, etc etc were all retired by the early 1990's, the only one still racing was Sinbad Bay and his career was cut short by injury. As you have said below :"After all, look at the great horses they had... they MUST have been using something!" What a very uneducated point of view.
you could be right , or it could be the sprint lane what a joke that is how many races would have pure steel and gammalite won with the sprint lane in operation ?
There's been some speculation about the use of EPO... from what I understand it's a rumour mill issue. After all, look at the great horses they had... they MUST have been using something! Bag Limit, Popular Alm, Sinbad Bay, Almeta Boy, Jane Ellen, Rocklea Victory... the list goes on. One thing you can guarentee... if they were using EPO they weren't orphans.
Vinny probably didn't think Bill's Student would hand the lead up so easily, he would have thought Robinson would've stayed in the death seat with Gammalite.
The Mount would have thrashed him both champions though and i saw him and patted him the Mount. Our Sir Vancelot he must rate up there these horses never had the beautiful metro tracks we have now and heres and oldie Binshaw is he on you tube
If you had to pick the best you've seen in the Southern Hemisphere, based on performances who would you pick? And if you had to pick one based on raw ability who would that be? For me... based on performances I couldn't separate Poppie, Blacks A Fake and Lazarus. But on pure ability... Ride High and Mount Eden.
No Kiwis. Bonnies Chance was undoubtedly the greatest miler of the time, maybe the greatest in Australasian history, and never invited. A disgrace. Poppie a better horse overall but over a mile she could pick him up and carry him.
Yes good point with Bonnies Chance, but the it was a matter of the schedule with NZ and Aust races. The 1983 Miracle Mile $80,000 was run on Feb 4th 1983 and Bonnies Chance was aimed at the $120,000 Auckland Cup run on Feb 12th 1983. Armalight another fantastic NZ mare won the 83 Auckland Cup with Bonnies Chance running a gallant 6th, so you can see why the kiwis didn't run that year with more money on offer at home. I think you are selling Popular Alm very short saying Bonnies Chance would beat him over a mile, you would have very few supporters in your corner with that statement. Cheers.
They will also tell you how much money Vin cheated people out of by taking his own life. A degenerate gambler who still owes people money. A man pays his way in life.
Popular Alm will remain the greatest pacer we will ever witness in our lifetime without a doubt
You want to take a look at Captain Ravishing.
Vinnie knight and poppy they were unstopable, if your truly a harness follower you'll agree, we will never see of these kinds anymore.
poppy and gamma, absolute champions
Popular alm the greatest pacer that we will ever witness
after the death of Vin knight The sport has never recovered ! and no one wants to admit it .
Yep, best Miracle Mile ever in terms of it being the best race between two horses. The single best performance will always be Mount Eden's win in the 60's. Still blows my mind when I see how much better he was than anyone else.
love to see some bag limit, paleface adios, pure steel...ah those were the old days
Gammalite did a fair bit of work to get to the lead. If he had started from inside poppy he wouldn't have got near him.
Gammalite was beaten by the draw.
i should get a clue and figure out how to get my "Vin a Knight to Remember" VHS into youtube, huh.
Bag limit won the miracle mile sitting three wide.
I can see you were a fan of Vin Knight, but Bag Limit never won a Miracle Mile and in fact never contested a Miracle Mile.

there ain't a day that goes by that i don't miss my cousin vinny and poppy was the best better than christian cullen.
@MrHellomum That's a very big statement. One thing for sure is that Poppie was definitely in the best half dozen that have ever graced our tracks.
all4pharlap i am so vinny knight's cousin ask anyone in new zealand and aussie who the knight family is and they will tell you one of the biggest families in harness racing.

LOL... I will forget more about this sport than you will ever know

interesting that vinny would let gammalite go around him and take the lead. guess that's why he was the master.
Vinny probably didn't think Bill's Student would hand the lead up so easily, he would have thought Robinson would've stayed in the death seat with Gammalite.
how would you know?
@bgardiner2000 whatever they had it was a lot more a efficient than trusty bread soda
The Mount would have thrashed him both champions though and i saw him and patted him the Mount. Our Sir Vancelot he must rate up there these horses never had the beautiful metro tracks we have now and heres and oldie Binshaw is he on you tube
Mount Eden and Popular Alm were both great horses, but they were also very unreliable, especially before the mobile starting gate.
The knights were known epo users, takes away from this great horse
Absolute garbage.
Do not forget hondo gratton.true champion.also.were do you stop
Blacks afake.????
it was always said that they had juice (never proven) and it was always said to be EPO
Copper way ,poppy Gammalite ..unbelievable times

The burst of Poppy, the toughness of Gammalite were horses I saw countless times live. And of course all the ones you mentioned amazing horses
Out of interest, who would you rate the top 3 horses in ANZ since 2000?
@@bgardiner2000 I reckon Blacks a Fake and Lazarus . Also Im the mighty Quinn in there and what about Shakamaker.
Leap to Fame triple crown too…

Maybe for you it hasn't
