Majestic! Thank goodness these graceful yachts have been preserved so that millennials can see what a classic yacht looks like compared to AC75 carbon aircraft. No guardrails - mind your balance!
Stunning yachts, great idea for a video. Being picky I would have liked some of the scenes to last longer. Didn't really have time to focus on anything.

I watched this video breathless. What a skills and elegance. But what really blew up my mind was the fact that, at the moment I wrote this, 21 people disliked it. They might for example like the mountains, well go and watch them and have fun but don’t piss off this piece of craftsmanship.
True, not the fastest, but the sense of power they possess, on a broad reach, under full sail is unsurpassed. Words don't do justice to the sensations of sailing in a 'J - boat'.
As much as I find the tech and short racing of the America's Cup fascinating, this is what SAILING looks like! 80 footers half length apart getting after it! No crash helmets, few cameras onboard, your EYES tell you what the boat, your direct opponent, the rest of the fleet and the WEATHER is doing! Figuring a J boat is, what, 15 million dollars that is a lot of dollars sailing together!
80 footers? Try 130-140' overall length. The waterline is around 80' alone... Then there's those gracious, beautiful overhangs. I design sailboats, but never have I been able to draw a boat this beautiful.
Reminds me of the Americas cup in Perth, watching beautiful yachts smashing through huge southern ocean swells in the sun doing 15knts, get that back on TV with today's drone technology it could be way more exciting than the 'follow the leader' F1 and football.
I’d say there’s room for both, a bit like how there’s room for all sorts of car racing. I love watching these for the size, the beauty and the classic shapes, but the AC yachts are stunning to watch because of the pure technical achievement and the speed of the things
They were something to see. I was out there as a spectator for both of the races that this video has been made from. It was all part of the AC35 events in Bermuda 2017. They did an offshore & an inshore race. IIRC they were supposed to do a race on the AC 35 course in the Great Sound but it was cancelled due to lack of wind. An unforgettable sight even if you are not a sailor. I am not. I agree, the clips in the video are way too short. It really does not do justice to the boats. The foiling cats are better seen on TV. I served as a spectator marshal boat skipper for the AC35 cat racing. Up close they are incredibly fast & quiet. An experience to remember but not particularly fun to do. We were the first boats out, setting down the course marker bouys with the transmitter attached that give you the lines you see on the water on TV. No the water is not marked. Under direction of the course directors we often had to move those markers mid race due to wind shifts. All interesting stuff but 6-8 hours without a break in a small18' RIB getting wet wears you down.
Absolutely stunning. This is what the Americas Cup should be. What's up with the black sails? This is the romantic side of sailing. This is exatly what I would do if I had obscene amounts of money. Thank you.
Back in the mid 1960s, I had the great good fortune of working as cook aboard the Cambria, one of the last remaining J class cutters. Most of what you watched in this film clip are modern reproductions. I joined the yacht's compliment in Marseilles and sailed the Cote d'Azure and Italian Riviera for several months. It was what you would imagine ... phenomenal.
Amazing images! J Class... what huge, breathtakingly beautiful sailing vessels! (The music, on the other hand, quickly turns into Hans Zimmer-like ghastly monotony, with the poor string section grinding away like robots)
Some of the 5 original J class yachts are about 100 years old. The Americas cup trophy is the oldest trophy in the world. The J class were the best Americas cup class.
Foils make speed but elegant monohulls will forever hold my heart.
Absolutely!
J class is the shape a child would draw a yacht, but refined to such a degree it brings tears to a grown mans eyes with its breath taking beauty.
There is nothing like it!!!!!!
I understand the desire to make boats fly as in Americas cup but a return to J boats would be amazing.
I agree. The race was upwind to gybe and watch each boat set their respective spinnaker is like watching a giant flower bloom.
speed increase is the first goal for a racing
