Passengers trapped in a subway are among at least 18 people killed in widespread flooding that hit China’s central Henan province on July 20, 2021. Video showed people trapped in carriages and on platforms in the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, by the flooding caused when nearly a year’s worth of rain fell over three days starting July 17. At least a dozen of those killed were people trapped in train carriages and on platforms. About 200,000 people have been displaced in the province. Local authorities have also warned about a 20-metre (66ft) breach in the Yihetan dam in the city of Luoyang, saying that the structure "could collapse at any time". Some viewers may find images in this video disturbing.

People getting trapped like that in subway trains is truly horrifying!

CHINESE INFRASTRUCTURE being recently built should be able to handle the amount of rainfall they get in the area in which it's built. Yet every year we see modern subway stations flooding and new construction dams being damaged/ washed away. In America they have FUNCTIONAL storm water drains so this exact thing doesn't happen. From the looks of the video the occupied subway is doing the job of stomwater drain. Most you will ever see is less than a foot of water on the road if the drain gets clogged by debris. Plus don't get me started on the sewer gas EXPLOSIONS that occur regularly in china.

Shows the need for elevated housing, and robust drainage system. I can't imagine how much a country the size of China would need. Underground transport/tunnels was always gonna be at high risk without proper underground planning.
this is happening everywhere i am scared now
Zhengzhou, or Henan Province as a whole, has historically been a water-scarce area, so their urban planning is bound to be inadequate in terms of drainage. The weather this year is really unusual. Who could have expected such a once-in-a-millennium rainstorm in a region that has traditionally been short of water
Heavy rains are common in China. The underground tunnels already have drainage systems. But 200mm in one hour was just insane. That exceeded the designed capacity.
Not matter how well you build a city, with 600mm per day of rain there's no way it won't flood.
