    As a machinist I have to tell you, that's a really nice gyroscope, and I've always wanted to make one but haven't gotten around to it even after over 30 years. Yours may be the inspiration to do it... I have a grandson who would be fascinated by it, especially if he could actually touch one, and feel the resistance... He's so smart I think he would understand it quickly! Thank you so much for sharing this! :o]

      I'll pay $10,000 for a large electric powered gyro on gimbals that flips over every 24 hours as the Earth spins. Small gyros don't seem to be strong enough to change angle as the Earth rotates for some reason.

      @@chesshooligan1282Tru, you can use a god string or cable, and a led or tungsten weight.
      you can also have it mark up a huge box of sand.
      I'd refrain from hanging that in a living room though. A garage can work. The longer the rope and heavier the weight, the longer it wil keep swinging

      They should,i think?; did you make sure you have the disc parallel to the earth's N-S line? meaning,assume on the equator, the disc rotation axis at 90º to the line N-S?
      You can make one,a big one; the supports can be scrap steel bars/angle irons, they DO NOT have to be all nice and round, they can be in a square shape,just the bearings need to be good; the rotor you can get from one of those heavy presses,before hydraulics;
      I think i know what you're thinking ; g-n?; i read it has been tried ,did not work,still i'd like to do some calculations,i'm an engineer

    When the rotational speed of the rotating disk increases, its angular momentum will increase, and thus the rotation axis will become more stable during the sudden rotational movement of the frame.

    • @normand5847

      They use gyro stabilizers in boats, today. They are an option on most pleasure boats over 30 feet. They come standard on some high end luxury yachts and deep sea fishing boats. They're not very massive these days. They only need about three feet of space in the boat.

    The gyro is not resisting motion. Is taking the force inflicted in one axis, and converting it to torque. Two perpendicular forces producing a new resultant force in a perpendicular plane to the previous forces. Basic Gyromechanics.

  • @dwilliams2068
    @dwilliams2068 5 років тому

    It's probably a little known fact that if you constrain a gyroscope such that it cannot tilt when you move it, it does not resist at all. It only resists when it has some slight freedom to tilt towards it's normal tilt direction.

    It would be very interesting if you could set it up with degree marks (on a piece of paper under it) and a fixed camera (above it), for say six hours. It would move 90 degrees, because of the earths rotation is 90 degrees in six hours.

    Dear Ed! I've tested a big gyroscope when I was in the 2 course at the University. But, actually, always in my life I wanted to build one. Can you provide some information about it? What type of bearings are in this gyro? Any dimensions of the gyro itself? Unfortunately, I can't find a video on how to, or any dimension of these gyros. I know that you can make it with whatever size you want, but I like your results! :) Thanks and BR! Bobby

    • @gigicaly
      @gigicaly 8 років тому

      +magdanoz88 I was thinking same thing about the schematics, but you know what? it's not that difficult to build once you understand the basic principles and have the right tools. Sure out of brass looks better but you can use pretty much anything. The basic rules apply to all shapes and sizes. The bearings must be able to handle w/e spin is there and the calibrations must be just right, other than that it's all simple math. My suggestion for you is get information on bearings and start from that to put a plan on paper. Have faith in your mind.

    Wow, I'm 60 and never seen anything like that, now auto-pilot makes sense. It appears to be as if it's gear driven in the rotor's reaction to movement, and I bet it is just as accurate. I'll be damned, I got a toy one I blow up to no tellin how fast with my blow gun in the shop. I always use a saftey squint too. I think I tossed it the last time due to the fact I can't trust myself to be an adult. Thanks for the video, I should'a took science instead of .

      @ScottNolasco  7 років тому +2

      Good question actually!
      While it's hard to see in the video, gyroscopes don't resist the urge to fall, but rather, to *twist* along an axis. So the object you are describing would certainly fall at a normal speed, but it would be hard to turn or re-orientate in another direction.

    • @buggsy5

      A spinning gyro does not lose weight, so cannot cancel gravity and float. There are at least two videos demonstrating this.

      really? .................. earth rotation?

    • @Nintencrow
      @Nintencrow 7 років тому +2

      Yeah. Navigational gyroscopes are suspended in such a way as to keep spinning for hours and also have motors to keep them at around 12.000 RPM. Say you point a spinning gyroscope at the north star and wait a few hours (assuming it doesn't stop), it will still point at the north star after an hour, even though the earth has rotated 1/24 of it's circumference. This is how ships navigate without using magnetic compasses.

    • @jadekayak01
      @jadekayak01 7 років тому

      Eliark your explanation is far to simplified.
      all navigational gyros are automatically corrected for earths rotation by a very precise and compkicated spring arraingement.

    • @Nintencrow
      @Nintencrow 7 років тому +5

      Partly true. I did not claim navigational gyro__compasses__ (which contain two or more gyros and are suspended in liquid, weighted and digitally corrected on top of a "spring arrangement") were affected in the same way. Please read more carefully before accusing me of being wrong about something I know more about than you.
      A balanced, spinning gyroscope left on a flat, stationary surface will always precede according to earth's rotation.
      Edit: I see I may have formulated myself unclearly, but I still never state anything outside of the experimental "system" of a spinning gyro pointed at a star. The rest is your assumption. At any rate, the comment from OGW was not "please give a detailed explanation" but a simple question with a simple answer: "yes".
