Although the nation was not yet at war in January 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used his annual message to Congress to proclaim the Four Freedoms as a de facto war standard to one and all.
Building on his reflections into the nature of freedom in the months beforehand, he enumerated for his audience each of the freedoms, stressing that they were not just a national ideal, but one that was needed “everywhere in the world.” Seven months later, in a secret meeting with Winston Churchill at sea, the two leaders signed the Atlantic Charter, whose principals built on the Four Freedoms and gave the president’s notion even more publicity.
Despite these highly public moments, however, the concept of the Four Freedoms failed to resonate on Capitol Hill, in journalistic reports, or even with the American public. Not even the government’s official Four Freedoms pamphlet, released six months after Pearl Harbor, was able to attract much attention. As pollster George Gallup noted, the president’s rallying cry had still “not registered a very deep imprint here at home.” By early 1943, staffers within the Office of War Information had begun to conclude in internal memoranda that FDR’s Four Freedoms theme had turned into an embarrassing flop.
It was not until Norman Rockwell painted his Four Freedoms that Americans could really understand what they were fighting for and why the Four Freedoms were so important to the country and the world.

I’m not a teacher or American and watching and enjoying. FDR is such an inspiration and interesting man. I’m grateful as a U.K. resident for the US and Canadian aid in WII.

@@mrubeeone thanks for sharing this🤗. I sure did hear FDR be echoed loud and clear! She's correct in her line of thinking. Here I sit at 2am another flood just hit Texas and were not fully recovered from the 2017 Harvey Flood. My husband and I have " so called Good Jobs" I'm blessed I have health care, my home , a job but 750 dollars month for my insulin I need to live is outrageous. The savings we had went for flood repairs and down payment on car that we lost in flood .I have mild scoliosis but I'm on my feet all the time as a Correctional Officer because it pays more than my career choice of a public school teacher , which is what I went to college for 😑 so I hurt all the time. With that good insurance I can't get a whole back MRI only am upper or a lower but not a complete MRI and thats Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield. How can I get a complete picture of my individualized health plan of action and do what is best for me if I'm denied full medical screening? Fair and just for all is what America needs. I'm ready to move forward and embrace a change for better. Rant over 😊

Kelly Lindsey Oh wow! Thanks for responding, Kelly, and sharing your story. Our nation is in a pretty dark place right now, especially with the news of the House launching an impeachment investigation. But I also have great hope. I am a self employed graphic designer, my Dad was career army, was a POW with the Japanese, survived that, then also served in Korea. After WWII, Dad was stationed in Italy, and met my Mom, they got married and had us six kids, raising us all on our family farm. So I guess that history informs everything I do. Mom and Dad saw war first hand and as hard as things are in this country, I know that we have survived worse. So, bringing everything full circle, when I saw what AOC was proposing, I was reminded of FDR, found this video and found your comment. I can’t help but think that’s a small sign that ultimately, we truly are all connected. FDR and Eleanor had great love for the people of this country, and it’s not hard to see that that spirit is still alive. People are pretty negative about AOC, calling her extremist or too radical. But I see her introduction of this legislation reminiscent of FDR’s commitment to make things better, and to rely on the goodness of our people to bring these plans to fruition. Hang in there, Kelly - all the very best to you! Keep the faith, we will get there together!

@@marubione thanks for sharing your story and thoughts as well. My dad was Army as well , Vietnam era, Grandpa was WW2 era, my mom was Navy. :) probably why I can be stubborn but thats my survival mode...lol but America is definitely facing a critical change, hopefully for the better. Across the nation we all can agree that something is on the horizon but this FDR speech, and Mr. Rogers always telling us to " Look for the helpers " is what we need to do...and if you can't find a helper or find a change, like Ghandi said be that change you wish to see in the world. Those are 3 of the persons speeches / ideals that align with my personal thoughts. Its the very core of simplicity and need . One thing is for certain across all generations and all walks of life...nothing is free and without cost. Have a great productive day!

@@NathanLongacre-jo6cx You are absolutely correct. The Democratic Party changed. JFK was a Democrat. Reagan was a Republican, after him the Democratic Party was different. I lived and witnessed it. The Squad are insurrectionists planted to destroy our country.

Well.... except the whole Japanese internment camps thing. That was pretty cringe. Like, I agree, I think the one exception was Lincoln, but I think we can all agree, internment camps are the peak of cringe.
Also dumping Wallace in favor of Truman as his VP for his fourth term. It’s hard to argue that that decision isn’t the one that put us on our nightmare path of warmongering we’ve been on post world war 2

FDR was a disaster for the American people. His idiotic "New Deal" policies lengthened the depression by 8 years. Compare the British economy after the 1929 to the American economy. Britain in the 30s had a quick recovery, because they embraced free market capitalism whereas the US econnomy wallowed in the doldrums until the war. It was only after Roosevelt lifted the restrictions on profits, lowered punitive taxes on industry and unleashed the engines of capitalism that America recovered.
After the war is was exactly the opposite. Britain went down the socialist road and tanked their economy, whreas the Amercan economy just shifted gears to non-miliatry porduction and just kept on rolling. It wasn't the lend-lease debt that killed the British economy is was the massive spending on social programs and the tightening of restrictions on businesses.
