Never warn someone verbally that you will cause them bodily harm or death, as it may be considered to be an assault, but do say stay back. Their giving off threat cues plus your verbal command to stay back will put them in legal jeopardy if they advance toward you. Impromptu weapons such as wasp spray, flashlight or stick, and knife will be treated in the same way as the use of a legal weapon, such as OC or CS spray, baton, or handgun. The Force that you use, must be a reasonable response, and not exceed the amount of force being used against you. There are some exceptions when there is a disparity of force being used against you, but usually that has to do with multiple attackers. So, Initially using a baton as an impact weapon against someone near your size would be considered excessive, but if you can’t leave and the attacker won’t stop attacking you, then use a big flashlight, stick, or a baton to strike at whatever is inbound to hurt you, such as, fists, feet, knees, shin, forearm or elbow. The head, neck, spine, solar plexus, and groin, are off limits unless lethal force is being used against you. Remember you may not be charged criminally but you still can be sued and loose.

Thank you for the comment! Try to remember that all of this information is implied and usually beyond the scope of a 5 minute UA-cam video! 😂 Dr. Morey has taught Martial arts and defensive tactics professionally for more than 30 years and is well aware of the issues you raise. The tough part is getting it done in a short video that is only about the basic mechanics of swinging a stick!

Nice video, but your ready position of the stick behind your head, etc is not viable. Just adds more distance to travel for blocking or striking! I have been practicing arnis since 1974. Have never seen this until recently on this and other videos. Thanks!

This position is the result of real world, practical applications which will preclude the attempts of an opponent grabbing the stick. It also gives plausible defense of any "ill" intentions of the stick wielder. Thank you for your comment!
