আমার গাইড আমার phd টাই শেষ করে দিয়েছে।
পিএইচডির গাইডরা অনিয়ন্ত্রিত ক্ষমতা উপভোগ করেন তাদের কর্মদক্ষতার কোনো মূল্যায়ন হয় না, তাদের পারিশ্রমিকও তাদের পারফরম্যান্সের সাথে সংযুক্ত নয়. কোনো প্রজেক্টে ব্যর্থতার দায়ভার তাদের নিতে হয় না. ছাত্রের পরিশ্রমলব্ধ গবেষণাপত্রটি প্রকাশ করতেও তাদের অনীহা. অনেকেই ছাত্রদের থেকে অনৈতিকভাবে অন্যান্য কাজ করিয়ে থাকেন. এইগুলো বন্ধ হওয়া প্রয়োজন. বছরের শেষে পারফরমেন্স রিভিউ ও সেই অনুযায়ী স্যালারি অ্যাওয়ার্ড দেওয়া হোক. Clear and achievable performance goal সামনে রাখা হোক বছরের শুরুতেই. কোনো ছাত্রকে ৫-৬ বছরের বেশি রাখা যাবে না, যাদের পিএইচডি করার যোগ্যতা নেই বলে বিবেচিত হবে তাদের প্রথম ২-৩ বছরের মধ্যেই বের করে দিতে হবে. আমি মূলতঃ যেটা বলতে চাই সেটা হলো এই গাইড নামক ভগবানদের performance benchmarking জরুরি ভিত্তিতে implement করে ফেলা
খুব বেদনাদায়ক ঘটনা। এই ঘটনা শুনে আমরা খুব মর্মাহত। আমি ছেলে Iiser Kolkata য় পাঁচ বছর ২০১৫থেকে ২০২০ পর্যন্ত পড়াশোনা করেছে BS MS । এবং এই দাদাকে চিনতেন। আমার ছেলে ও খুব দুঃখিত। বর্তমানে আমাদের ছেলে USA তে PhD করছে। আমরা সবসময়ই চিন্তায় থাকি । সবাই আশির্বাদ করবেন ছেলে যেন ভালো থাকে।
আমি যে দাদার কাছে physics পড়েছিলাম তিনি তার research guide এর মেয়ে কে school এ নিয়ে যাওয়া নিয়ে আসা ও করতেন। system কে আরও well managed করতে হবে , ভিক্ষা বন্ধ করে আর Research এ সরকারকে বেশি spend করতে হবে যদি দেশ কে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যেতে হয় তো ।

দেখো তিনি স্বেচ্ছায় করেছিলেন না তুষ্ট করতে বা চাপের ফলে করেছিলেন সেটা জানা দরকার। দেখো আমি আই এস আই থেকে পি এইচ ডি করেছি এই বছরের শুরুর দিকে। তো এখন কোনো অফিসিয়াল রিলেশনশিপ নেই। কিন্তু আমার গাইড তো কশ্মিন কালে কোন ক্ষেত্রে কোন ফেবার নেনই নি বরং সবদিক থেকে আমায় গাইড, উৎসাহিত ও রক্ষা করেছেন। আমার তো এখনো ইচ্ছা করে কোনদিন যদি তিনি তাঁর জন্য কিছু করার সুযোগ দেন তো আমি ধন্য হব।
তবে তার মানে এটা নয় কেউ কোন অন্যায়কর কাজ করেনা। দেখো অ্যাকাডেমিতে 90% ভাল, 9% কিছু এমন ভুল করেছে যাতে মারাত্মক ক্ষতি হয়েছে স্টুডেন্টের আর 1% হল হাড়বজ্জাত। এবার এটা যদি অন্য সিভিল প্রফেশনে দেখ তাহলে কিছু ক্ষেত্রে বেশি বা কম। কিন্তু পি এইডি একটা অনেক ঘোলাটে ব্যাপার এটা অন্ধকারের মধ্য থেকে উৎসারিত আলো বের করার বিষয়। এবার গবেষক যেহেতু অজানার খোঁজে বেড়িয়েছে জ্ঞাত কোন কিছু তার ক্ষেত্রে খাটবেনা।

দীর্ঘ সাতবছর গবেষণার সাথে যুক্ত থাকার সুবাদে বলতে পারি, research institute নিয়ে আমাদের সমাজে প্রচুর মিথ আছে। কত অধ্যাপক/অধ্যাপিকা যে এর অপব্যবহার করেন, সেটা বলতে গেলে গোটা দিন লেগে যাবে! আজ সময় এসেছে এঁদের দেওয়া সম্মানের হিসেব বুঝে নেওয়ার!!

দেশে বেশিদিন রিসার্চ করিনি, অভিজ্ঞতা অত্যন্ত সীমিত। ২০০৮ এ সামার প্রজেক্ট - গাইড জি মুগেস IISc Bangalore এর। তিনি অত্যন্ত ভালো লোক, আমার মতো সামান্য সামার স্টুডেন্ট এর সাথেও উনি রিসার্চ প্রোগ্রেস নিয়ে কথা বলতেন, পরামর্শ দিতেন। পিএইচডি স্টুডেন্টদের সাথেও হেলদি ও এক্সপেক্টড এডভাইসর-স্টুডেন্ট সম্পর্ক ছিল বলে মনে হয়েছে। দ্বিতীয়জন IITK-র পি কে ভরদ্বাজ, পুরো MSc প্রোজেক্টে একদিনও কথা বলেছিলেন কিনা মনে পরেনা। পিএইচডির স্টুডেন্টদের সাথে তাঁর সম্পর্ক নিয়ে ধারনা নেই, দেখেশুনে অনুমান তা ভক্ত-প্রভু সম্পর্কের মতো। আমি ভুল হতেও পারি। অনেক গল্প শুনেছি, পিএইচডি স্টুডেন্ট প্রফেসরের বাজার করে, বাচ্ছাকে স্কুলে নিয়ে যায়, এসবের সত্য মিথ্যা জানিনা - হয়তো আইসোলেটেড ইন্সিডেন্স, রেগুলার বলে মানতে কষ্ট হয়। শুভদীপ রায়ের গাইড শুনছি তাকে গবেষণায় সাহায্য করেনি।
আমার ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতা, আমাকেও আমার পিএইচডি গাইড হাও ইয়ান ইন্টেলেকচুয়ালি খুব একটা সাহায্য করেনি, কিন্তু রিসোর্স দিয়ে করেছেন। কো এডাভাইসর ইয়ান লিউ বরং কিছুটা সাহায্য করেছেন। একই অভিজ্ঞতা আমার বেশ কিছু বন্ধুরও যারা ইউরোপ ও আমেরিকায় পিএইচডি করেছে। এটা সাধারণত হয় যখন পি আই এমন একটা ফিল্ডে রিসার্চ শুরু করেন যেটা সম্বন্ধে তাঁর নিজেরও স্পষ্ট ধারনা নেই। রিসোর্স লিমিটেড সেট আপে এটা খুব ফ্রাস্ট্রেটিং।
আরও একটা ব্যাপার আমার মনে হয়, সেটা ইন্ডিয়ার রিসার্চ ইন্সটিটিউটে সতীর্থদের থেকে আসা একটা পিয়ার প্রেসার। কার, ক'টা পাবলিকেশন কতদিনের মধ্যে হোল, কে কোথায় পোস্টডক পেল এই নিয়ে একটা অসুস্থ পরিবেশ আছে। একজনের পাব্লিকেশনে হলে সেলিব্রেশন, খাওয়া দাওয়া, এসব সেই ছেলে বা মেয়েটির উপর চাপ ফেলে যার চারবছর পরেও পেপার এর ঝুলি শূন্য। উচ্চশিক্ষার সফিস্টিকেশনের কারনে এটা ঠিক প্রতিযোগিতার পর্যায়ে না গেলেও, এই প্রেসার ফল্গুধারার মত সব সময় প্রবহমান। এর কারন হয়ত আমাদের দেশে চাকরি বাকরির অপ্রতুলতা। তাই শুরু থেকেই you can't be just good, you have to be excellent. এই প্রতি্যোগিতা আমাদের একদম প্রাইমারি থেকে শুরু হয়, এবং এছাড়া উপায়ও নেই। এডভান্সড ওয়েস্টার্ন ইকোনমিতে এটা নেই। তাই এই শুভদীপ রায় যদি এই সব দেশে জন্মাত, এবং তার গাইড যদি সাহায্য নাও করতো, তার পিএইচডি যদি আশানুরূপ সফল নাও হোত, সে এট লিস্ট আত্মহত্যা করতো না। কেবল পড়াশোনার বিফলতার কারনে আত্মহত্যা ভারতবর্ষে অত্যন্ত বেশি।

আমি একজন গবেষক। একটা কথাই বলতে চাই... ভালো গাইড পাওয়া ভাগ্যের ব্যাপার। একজন গবেষক কিসের ওপর দিয়ে যায়, সেটা কেবল সেই জানে 😔
একদম ঠিক বলেছেন আপনি। আর গাইডদের শয়তানি আটকাতে তো সেরকম কোনো শক্তপোক্ত আইন নেই, তাই তাদের অনেকেই জাস্ট যা-খুশি-তাই করে বেড়ায়।

প্রচুর ক্রাইম হয় সুপারভাইজার এর দ্বারা । কিন্তু যার বিরুদ্ধে কোনো আইনি পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া যায় না । ওনারা নিজের স্বার্থে ব্যবহার করে , এমন কি বাড়ির কাজেও ।
আবারও একটা প্রমান যে আমাদের সমাজে পচনটা কতটা গভীর।কতটা ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। কিন্তু আমরা নির্বিকার।আমাদের কিছু যায় আসে না।
বিষয়টার আরো গভীরে যাওয়ার অনুরোধ রাখছি । বিশেষ করে প্রফেসর চিরন্জিব মিএর ভূমিকা অবগতের জন্য । উক্ত বিষয়ে যেন আরো পর্ব হয় ।

দিদি স্টুডেন্ট মৃত্যু বা "স্টুডেন্ট সুইসাইড" নিয়ে কিছু বলুন।শিক্ষা ব্যবস্তা নিয়ে কিছু বলুন। বহু দিনের গতে বাঁধা শিক্ষা নিয়ে কিছু বলুন।
আমার পরিচিত একটি মেয়ে, খুবই মেধাবী, ফুল স্কলারশিপ নিয়ে আমেরিকার এক নামী ইন্সটিটিউটের প্রথম বর্ষের ছাত্রী । তার এক অধ্যাপিকা তাকে একটি পেপারে উপযুক্ত নম্বর না দেওয়ায় ও একটু অবাক হয়ে তাঁকে জিজ্ঞেস করে সে কি ভাবে লিখলে আরও ভালো করতে পারে, তিনি কোন সদুত্তর দিতে পারেননি শুধু বলেছেন, "তুমি যা পাবার যোগ্য তাই পেয়ে ছ "। ঐ কথা শুনে মেয়ে টি খুব দুঃখ পায় ও কান্নাকাটি করে , ওর মা ওকে পরামর্শ দেন বিভাগীয় প্রধান এর সংগে দেখা করে এই একই প্রশ্ন করতে । সাময়িক ভাবে সমাধান হয়েছে । পরে জানা গেছে ঐ ইন্সটিটিউটের বেশ কিছু ছাত্র ছাত্রীরা আত্মঘাতী হয়েছেন শিককে শিক্ষিকা দের কারণে । ঐ মেয়ে টিকে তার মা সময় মত পরামর্শ না দিলে পরিণতি অন্য রকম হতে পারত। মা বাবা সবসময় জানতে পারেন না সন্তান এর সমস্যার কথা। ভালো কাউনসেলিং এর বিশেষ প্রয়োজন । আত্ম বিশ্বাস নেই যাদের, তাদের তুলে ধরতে হবে ।
আজকাল অনেক ছেলেমেয়েই মা বাবা র একমাত্র সন্তান । আদরযত্ন টা ভালমতন হয়।তাছাড়া বাবা মা সব কর্মরত হ ওয়ায় একাকীত্ব ও গ্রাস করে অনেক সময়। অবহেলা অনাদর, লাঞ্ছনা এ সব সহ্য করার ক্ষমতা এদের মধ্যে কম । তাই দিন দিন আত্মহত্যার প্রবণতা বাড়ছে।

অসংখ্য ধন্যবাদ এই বিষয়টা সকলের সামনে আরো ভালো ভাবে তুলে ধরার জন্য। আমি নিজে একজন IISER এর স্কলার, ভীষণ ভাবে সব কিছু চাপা দেওয়ার চেষ্টা চলছে। ভীষণ দুঃখজনক, মেনে নেওয়া কঠিন।

খুবই মর্মান্তিক। কোনো অঘটন না ঘটলে যেন কারোর টনক নড়ে না। শুভদীপ রায় জীবন দিয়ে সিস্টেম এর ত্রুটি চোখে আঙুল দিয়ে দেখিয়ে গেলেন।

শুভদীপ এর লেখা ওই চারটে বাক্য আমার ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতার পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ প্রতিফলন। ঠিক ৬ বছরের মাথায় এই একই কারণে PhD ছেড়ে দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়ে ফেলেছিলাম। অনেক অনেক লড়াই করে অবশেষে ৮ বছরে PhD শেষ করতে পেরেছি।
আমি ভাগ্যবান যে ঠিক এই সময় আমার ভগবানকে পেয়েছিলাম আমার পাশে, পেশায় যিনি মনোচিকিৎসক। নিজের মেয়ের মত করে আমাকে যিনি উৎসাহ যুগিয়ে গেছেন।
কিন্তু সবাই আমার মত ভাগ্যবান হয় না।
PhD life এর ট্রমা র কারণে এখনও আমাকে নিয়মিত মনোচিকিৎসকের সান্নিধ্যে থাকতে হয়। And this is the price we are paying to achieve the highest degree, pan India.
ইন্ডিয়াতে higher education এ ব্যয় সরকার দিনের পর দিন কমিয়ে চলেছে। বাইরের দেশে PhD স্কলার রা কত stipend পায় আর আমাদের দেশে কত পায় সেটার তুলনা হয় না। তার ওপর এইসব মান্ধাতা আমলের চিন্তা ধারণা সম্পন্ন কিছু guide, যারা নিজেদের কমতি গুলো ঢাকতে phd স্কলারদের ওপর frustration বের করেন।

বেদনাদায়ক, হতাশাজনক। তবে এই সমস্যা সর্বত্র। একটু অন্যরকমভাবে হয়তো! আমি শিল্প-সাহিত্য জগতে যেসব অসভ্যতার, অমানবিকতার, হেনস্থার শিকার হয়েছি, অকল্পনীয়। কেউ নেই যে একটু সঠিক পথের দিশা দেবে! প্রতিভার সঠিক মূল্যায়ন হবে! উল্টে আরও নেতিবাচকতায় ডুবিয়ে দেবে। আমিও শেষ হয়ে যাচ্ছিলাম। অনেক কষ্টে এখন ধাতস্থ হয়েছি। ধিক্কার এইসব অসুস্থ মানসিকতার 'শিক্ষকদের'(এই অভিধায় ডাকতেও ইচ্ছে করে না আজকাল)। ধিক্কার, ধিক্কার, ধিক্কার।
It’s true .. same was happened in JU .. one of my friends was doing PhD on electronics but his mentor was characterless old professor and had affair with a married girl who was also doing PhD under him. He cried a lot as his efforts was never acknowledged and the mentor was not allowing to do the lab .every time that professor and that lady locked the lab from inside and not allowed anyone to enter anyone. Fortunately my friend cleared SET and kicked off the PhD program and joined Asst professor. Unfortunately kno news channel e nai sobai SSKM a honubrata niye busy

I have achieved my PhD from a North American University but under supervision of an Indian American Professor. I got similar treatment even worse in sense, he kept my papers under controll didnt publish till 8 years even after my completion of my PhD He tried his best to steal my work, made me to work at his home do household chores and even after all these he continuously tried to send me back to India but only since I got Scholarships from University so he couldn't.
Whole world knows this corruption in research world but nobody will do anything about it. System requires a change asap
I am doing Ph. D. in chemistry. Same situation is here. I know how does it feel when supervisor neglects or doesn't help u in ur research. My supervisor doesn't provide me chemicals and don't give me acess to use instruments. He is a very bias person and particularly only gives importance to one girl in the lab and gave her to access everything. If u give some quality research idea, he will tell to do it together with the girl. My batchmate quit Ph. D. I couldn't help chasing my dream.I was depressed and also suicidal in 2019. So many nights I stayed awake crying and the unbearable mental torture lead me to commit suicide. However, I was outspoken and always share with family and friends. With the help of God and some true friends help me to came out of the situation and carrying out my research by taking help from some friends for instrumental facilities. Now I have become strong and determined that I will show the professor what I can do without his guidance. It's not my situation, thousands of researchers are facing same situation. But ur life is valuable... If u r diamond doesn't matter where u r... U will shine one day..

কোন ও আশা নেই। এরকম আগেও অনেক এ ধরণের ঘটনা ঘটেছে।কিন্তু কোন ও তরফ থেকেই কোনও রকম স্টেপ নেওয়া হয় না।
একদম ঠিক কথা, কোন আশা নেই। শুভদীপ যদি অশিক্ষিত গরীব হতো, তাহলে পরিবারের হাতে কিছু টাকা দিয়ে মুখ চাপা দেওয়ার সম্ভাবনা ছিল। কিন্তু শিক্ষিত, উচ্চ শিক্ষিত ছেলে মেয়েরা এখন সমাজের আপদ বিশেষ। তাদের স্বাধীন স্বচ্ছ চিন্তাশক্তি এবং সততা শাসকদের ঘুম কেড়ে নেয়। তাই এসব প্রজাতি যতো কম হয়,ততোই ভাল।

Mr. Guha is right. Many supervisors do not guide and even do not suggest a research topic. But they put their name as author of research paper. Anonymous student feedback may improve the situation. As a long time academic, I suggest that students choose supervisor after talking to his students.

My boyfriend is a Research Scholar of IISER Kolkata. He always says that his guide is not guiding him properly and also his colleagues are not that much co operative. He's so much depressed and tensed for his research work. I hope after this incident every research scholar of IISER will get the proper guidance of their guides.
I am from Gurgaon Haryana basically from West Bengal Singur Hooghly. My daughter got rank of AIR 764 JAM . I thought she must take Admission in IISER Mohali because during this long journey students get enough money. My daughter expressed such situation which she heard from seminar and other friends. She refused to take Admission in IISER around 15 days ago . I was sad about her decision. Today , I think she is right. Integrated PhD is not so easy for any girl. The toughest thing is that if anybody left before completing PhD, will not get MSC degree. Considered as a plain graduate after westing so many years.

It's really tragic that we had to lose such a Brilliant & Promising Scientist due to the lack of proper reach-out solutions, which might have helped this upcoming Scientist to get a hold of himself psychologically and avoid taking such a drastic step.
Firstly, Thank you for collating such a tragic yet very badly needed session, on such a malaise within our Upper Educational institutions and so called intelligensia (read Teachers, Professors, Lecturers, Research Guides etc) in charge of such places of Higher Learning, who far from facilitating, do significantly more to dampen the enthusiasm of such Bright, Intellectual Gems, just to ensure their continued personal preeminence and covering-up their personal inadequacies.
Thanks to your Guest on the show for articulating the deep rot in most of our Educational & Research institutions. It was really Shocking to know that we have lost nearly 170,000 Promising Scientists/Students of higher learning in the last 24 years (Avg. >7,000 every year). In any case we end up losing thousands of such Brilliant Minds to Foreign Countries, with better facilities and safeguards and opportunities for these people, who also don't see a promise of being able to put to fruitful use their accomplishments in our own country due to mindless people in Government.

This is common even in some Western institutes but with some differences. I met a person about 30 years ago whose supervisor published his student's thesis in his own name at the very last stage of the research. Our friend became suicidal to discover that his guide took away all the benefit of his hard work. Don't know if such things also happen in India.
In India, it is common for supervisors to put their name in research papers without any contribution. This is also prevelant in many other countries. Academics do not speak out as most are involved in this malpractice. Those not in this malpractice are silenced.
I have studied both in the top most Institute of India and in an american University as well but unfortunately I have found this corruption is global. Every where in research world supervisors are demons but yes not all. There are good supervisors as well but the majority is like this one at IISER.
In American Univ. If one got admitted with scholarships then they can go and complain against supervisors and get a chance to change as well but in India thats not the case. I am not sure in which country your friend has done the PhD but if he has had evidences that. Its his work then he could sue his supervisor and complain to university authorities as well.
In India, I have had female supervisors putting their names as first author (without doing any work or generating ideas, just by editing manuscripts). Abroad, I have had supervisors who took away the credit/benefits of my hard work by pretending /implying that they are most knowledgeable, and by pretending/implying that it is they who have made me work hard - which is not the case because researchers such as myself work for our career advancement. Sometimes, the element of 'sexual harassment' is imposed on short-term staff for silencing purposes, just so the malpractices can go on in favor of long-term employees...

I completely agree with Mr. Debjyoti. In the Indian education system, we give too much power to the 'guides' who often tend to either misguide or do not guide. Some of them aren't even fit to be called supervisors or principal investigators. These people do not read about recent research or know how to do research, they simply get paid to boss around. I have quite a few friends who left academia or are planning to leave academia for this sole reason, even after going through this hell for over 4-5 years.
I am both sad and angry about the suicides that are becoming so common in many higher education institutes, yet the system is not changing, the culprit profs aren't even being held accountable! Instead, everything is being swept under the rug. THIS NEEDS TO STOP!!!

I escaped to the US for my PhD but did see how things were, even in an elite institution such as an IIT: during my Masters I remember, the PhD students would be sent to the market to buy groceries by the wife of the research guide. The quality of PhDs from even elite institutions are mostly mediocre, although there are plenty of well meaning students. But the quality of both students and faculty are dropping steeply as institutes mushroom. As a Dean of a newly launched institute belonging to an industrial tycoon, I was horrified to see the quality of faculty guiding the students. These faculty were not even competent to teach high school. And likewise for the students, most couldn’t write a sentence correctly in full..

It is well known that PhD students are entitled for a stipend in their first 5 years of their PhD degree, within which most student achieve their degrees. Those who are unable to complete in due stipend time overcome this financial barrier through mere dedication and love for their work work and complete the work in the 6th year. Rarely do we find a student completing PhD in his 7th, 8th year unless he himself voluntarily plans to do so. However it is not well known that PhD registration in the institute stands null and void after the student fails to submit the thesis at the end of the 8th year. Subhadip with more than three research articles was clearly on the way towards his degree, and this unfortunate outcome is not as a result of research frustration. Thus detailed investigation is always on the cards. There are many instances where guides consider their most senior experienced and helpful research student as an personal asset and employ them in guiding newcomers. Longer the senior student takes care of the lab the lazier the guide can afford. Subhadip has proved to be a successful mentor to the new scholar and the guide may have deferred the thesis submission beyond the 8th year against his wishes/plans.
I would request MS.Poulomi to go for an investigative journalism on this fact that how worthless people has been recruited in these National Institutes over India. Many of them are nonacademic from their core, they got their jobs only because of their bosses who are in the recruitment board and want to secure their chairs, post retirement through recruitment of these 'Yesmen' in different Institutes. These filthy thugs should not be called scientists. I was a Ph.D student 20 years back in IACS, kolkata and can produce many references to such worthless scientists around. Thank god, I chose a safer way, to leave my country after my Ph.D since I didn't have that courage.

Higher Education system is very crucial in India because govt.are not serious in this matter. In most advance countries govt. as well as corporates invest huge money for research work. That is why talented persons leaves our country for better prospect and to fulfill their aspiration. All parties in India are engaged with their agenda for their political gain but no nationalistic approach is seen for the betterment of our scholer as well as our country.
Its not only in India but even in America and Canada. I faced similar even worse from my supervisor who was Indian American. Even he did the same with me and tried his best so that I don't get the degree but only since I was on Univ. Scholarships so he couldn't stop me.
