I was teaching in the Bronx during the 80’s crack explosion. Derrick is exactly on point when he said crack decimated families. The grandparents stepped in but families were broken and it was a hellish time.

Heartbreaking to hear him say “it’s too easy” knowing full well he doesn’t want to be homeless. The system makes you think you’re the problem when you’re not. Food and hygiene products are not exotic amenities being handed out they are necessity’s being provide to extremely destitute people.

I agree with a lot of what this guy has to say and I relate to this alot. This hasn't been one of the most emotionally impactful interviews but it's probably one of my favorites
He is the only person telling the truth about why so many people are homeless. People worry about homeless when they really need to worry about the working class in apartments and stuff. Being homeless you don't have to worry about being evicted etc. I'm glad he spoke a out that.

Derrick is a very smart and empathetic man, and I wish him well. He hit on something that isn't talked about much here but I'd been curious about. Very well-intentioned people who offer food or clothes or cleaning supplies might be making it too easy to stay there, or not do anything -- actually doing the disenfranchised more harm than good, because they don't have incentive. Even he admits that. But how does society help these people climb out of these dark holes? It is profoundly sad.
