    People used to tune in for the entertainment. Scott's incessant, vindictive demands for money from strangers are hilarious. This is one TV hustler who really is missed. Thank you, Werner Herzog, for recording him in all his vituperative glory.

      @@CapnSchep A highlight always came when Gene would refuse to talk until he got a stipulated amount in pledges. The camera would zoom in on the old fraud, and he'd sit there in his cowboy hat, scowling at the lens and smoking a cee-gar. He was like something out of a Sam Peckinpaugh movie. I'd cast Jason Robards in the role.

      I remember that a few other priests also had problems with the government in the United States.
      Peter Popoff was caught for fraud and sent to prison for a few years. He is out now, selling holy water and other bs.
      Kent Hovind is a young earth creationist who was sent to prison for not paying taxes. He is out now. Probably selling bs products.
      Perhaps this is why in Russia, they killed off priests and closed churches. Perhaps they were speaking against the bolsheviks. The bolsheviks were violent. They would fuck you up and dump your body into a mass grave.

We decided to have a Hall of Fame and post pictures of our favorite religious speakers on the lintel that separated the old living room from the dining room. Dr. Gene Scott ("Scotty") was one of the men featured. He was in good company with "Through the Bible" savant Dr. J. Vernon McGee, and a metaphysical minister, Dr. Robert Scott ("Scotty"). When I saw this doc, I saw it as a very deep criticism of the church in the US, especially of Evangelicals. How people's faith is treated as a commodity to be sold. Gene was in too deep. His life, his home, his possessions were all owned by the Church, not by him. His desperation to gain that $600 was not because he believed it would be beneficial, but because the Church wanted it. His career,his reputation and his livlihood was dangling by a thread held by the church if he didnt do what they wanted. He saw orphans and poor abused dogs, and he funded orphanages and believed in justice and fairness, he was genuinely a good man. And the church exloited that, using orphans to gain sympathy in return for money they wouldnt spend on good causes.

    • @NGC6144
      @NGC6144 Місяць тому

      I have to disagree with your take on this. He controlled Faith Center, not the other way around. As he stated when he became pastor one of the conditions was that the church board had to unanimously approve him and then all resign. He mentioned from time to time the church board but who was ever on it? If it even existed afterword it seems in name only that functioned like a rubber stamp to his exclusive will. This board obviously couldn't reign him in with some of his outrageous nonsense especially around the 1990s. He talked principles but it was a means to an end. He never could fleece the congregation enough. I'm not saying he was a total hypocrite. To his credit he didn't exploit human suffering for money. On the other hand, he exploited scripture to maximize giving under the guise of principle. And this giving away his wealth to prove himself in the eyes of everyone else is BS. Who did he give it away to, transferred title to his church? He just effectively giving it back to himself and probably with the tax advantages in mind.

    I learned a lot of Bible from Dr Scott. I'm not a penny poorer for the joint participation and the value exchange for what I learned. Like Jesus told Peter, when Peter looked and saw the disciple Jesus loved following in John ch 21, Peter said, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said, "22 Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!"
    I am not Dr Scott's judge. He was a teacher, and a good one at that. a man of faith.

    You can question his sincerity, but not his intellect, a very conflicted man in a lot of ways who can teach on something quite fascinating than the next minute try to guilt you into giving money above and beyond any reality found in biblical scripture a teacher, actor and business man wrapped in bubble of anger and religious duality. I am a Christian but in the end his inner Demons took over an d the God he supposedly preached had already left the building.
