The Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu mela held at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam. This yearly mela is celebrated during the monsoon season that falls during the Assamese month Ahaar, around the middle of June when the sun transits to the zodiac of Mithuna, when the Brahmaputra River is in spate. Why do we celebrate Ambubachi Mela? The festival marks the menstruation period of the goddess, and it is believed that during this time, the earth becomes fertile. Now, the scientific explanation to this amazing phenomenon is that, the first reason to this phenomenon is that the soil of the area is rich in iron content naturally which already gives the water blood-like red colour. According to the Kalika Purana, Kamakhya Temple denotes the spot where Sati used to retire in secret for a carnal union with Shiva, and it was also the place where her yoni (genitals and womb) fell after Shiva's tandav (dance of destruction) with the corpse of Sati. What happens during ambubachi ? "Ambubachi" means spoken with water and it also implies that the rains expected during this month make the earth fertile and ready for procreation.
