70s और 80s के दशक मे अमिताभ बच्चन का होना फिल्म की सफ़लता की गारंटी माना जाता था। उस दौर में जो फ़िल्मों के बड़े-बड़े फिल्म लेखक हुआ करते थे वो चाहे सलीम-जावेद हों या कादर ख़ान, सभी अमिताभ के करीबी दोस्त थे और वो फिल्म की कहानी भी अमिताभ को ध्यान में रखकर ही लिखा करते थे। इसके बाद वो लोग प्रोड्यूसर लोगों के पास जाकर भी सबसे पहले अमिताभ का नाम ही सजेस्ट करते थे। इससे निर्माता-निर्देशक को लगता था कि अमिताभ बच्चन ही इस रोल में फिट हो पाएंगे। इससे धीरे-धीरे बड़े फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक जैसे यश चोपड़ा, रमेश सिप्पी, ऋषिकेश मुखर्जी, मनमोहन देसाई और प्रकाश मेहरा आदि ने अमिताभ को ही लीड एक्टर मानकर फिल्में बनाई जो सफ़ल भी रही। राजेश खन्ना साहब ने 1969 से 1973 तक लगातार 17 सुपरहिट फिल्में देकर जो स्टारडम देखा वो तो किसी भी एक्टर को आजतक नसीब नहीं हुआ। लेकिन अमिताभ ने लंबी पारी खेल ली। बाकी बड़े एक्टर जैसे धर्मेंद्र, शशि कपूर, विनोद खन्ना और शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा सभी ने अच्छा काम किया लेकिन अमिताभ की पॉपुलिरिटी ज्यादा थी।

It is true that with the beginning of making of "Sholay" Dharmendra was the only big star but as stated by Director Ramesh Sippy at the release time of Sholay Amitabh was Bigger Star after success of Zanjeer, Abhiman, Namak Haraam, Mazboor and Deewar. Hence although Dharmendra's bigger role a Major credit of Sholay movie went to Amitabh Bachchan and after it's historical success he became the biggest star in industry. No doubt Dharmendra was always a big and successfull star with many hit movies but never ever considered level higher star than Amitabh Bachchan right from release of Sholay.
