Hi, Dr A. :) I'm an electronics graduate, i come here at lunchtime to refresh my memories, go through the basics one more time (again, and again). I must say I'm enjoying your videos and i'm glad there are still some people teaching the basics correctly (without mystification and misunderstanding of concepts). Also, i think the "glass" concept is very effective. Thanks from Belgium ;)

As an electrician I understand the Principles & Concepts of your lectures and also a bunch of well worn formulas that I use in my day to day work but I am fascinated by your very clear mathematical explanations of the theory and the way you illustrate with everyday examples. I don't think I have had Maths presented in such a compelling way. I really enjoy your lectures. Makes me feel like doing a maths degree.

At 1:10 into the presentation, I am reminded (for no reason that I can think of nor describe) The change-over from a coil and points and distributor to a spark plug which has a gap with electricity coming from a battery with a generator recharging the batteries or an alternator which must have its current converted to 12 volts from alternator current. At any rate, I had a BMW Motor cycle, and R80, which had some sort of distributor with points. I sent away for a capacitive discharge ignition. Directions helped me to figure out where the wires should go. And I recall perhaps that a plate went into the distributor to replace the points, but maybe not; it was quite a while ago, the 1970's. I'm guessing that it is possible that some of these effects were at work, in this system. I know that the Capacitive discharge ignition timed a release of current differently than the purely with the points opening and closing the circuit. The other thing I recalled is that during the process, there was an increase going on in the capacitive discharge unit until a certain quantity of volts or amps was reached (in storage) and then a sudden higher velocity current (than points and coil alone) was released through the spark plug wires to the spark plug. I also recall that a proper propagation of the spark needed to occur, while combining the compression of the air/fuel mixture, so that the spark started the explosion within the motorcycle's cylinder at a moment when it could ignite the mixture in a controlled fashion. I recall also that the octane of the air/fuel mixture was important because it had to do with the willingness of the mixture to ignite more or less completely in a, "controlled," fashion with even spark spread. This all had also to do with the compression ration and something called the Stoichometric ratio of air to fuel with an ideal being measured theoretically at sea level I recall that timing was either before or after top dead center, when the piston had compressed the air fuel mixture (which itself was sent into the cylinder by a carburetor of a fuel injector. Some times long or short runners are used and sometimes it is a gravity feed or a fuel rail etc. The idea was to have the fuel entering the cylinder in an exact amount at exactly the right time. (Port injection and direct injection being two of the way to present or introduce fuel into the cylinders.) Whether a carburetor which has jets, or injectors of some variety, the aim was to take that same Stoichometeric 14.7 parts air to one part fuel and to break the mixture up so the molecules of air and fuel were not only together, but while doing so, the small possible size of droplets, evenly spaced within the confines of the cylinder were achieved. This also helped with the control of the burn or explosion (controlled explosion); at the same time, the finer the particles of the mixture could be made as they were dropped, pushed, pullled or forced into the confines of the cylinder would mean a more complete burn of the entire air/fuel mixture in the cylinder.
I recall that compression had a lot to do with the tight seal of the rings of the piston against the walls of the cylinder, cutting off escape of the A/F mixture during the compression stroke from a relative small approximtely circular area of the seal; while at the same time, the A/F mixture intake valve would come open at a timed moment in the cycle to admit the fuel. Further, the exhaust valve would come open theoretically just before, during or after the explosion in the cylinder to allow remaining unburned charge along with gases from the burned or exploded charge, to exit from the cylinder. The piston going up and down in the cylinder would compress or squish the fuel as it rose; and then it would tend to create a vacuum while dropping and creating a larger volume in the down stroke. However the tremendous force of the explosion, burn and gases also were pushing against the piston which then pushed the rod to which it was attached which pushed on a journal of the crank shaft, forcing it to rotate in one plane but with offset positions by 1 to 16 cylinders in automotive engine (except Wankel engines). In reality, the efficiency of an engine is measured again all of the above with the valves having what is known as, "overlap." This mean that during the ,"ignition stroke,", both the intake and the exhaust valves were both open or a period of time, a percentage of the entire four stroke process, at the same time. This brings back the discussion of the CDI or Capacitive Discharge ignition. It was found that just having a hotter spark did not automatically mean more power in the engine and each of its cylinders. That spark had to be of a certain temperature to ignite the perfectly mixed & atomized A/F mixture properly to allow the flame generated by the spark to spread evenly and minimize hot and cool spots within the cylinder. The stronger and more sudden spark caused or allowed for with the CDI, however, allowed the gap of the spark plug to be widened, while the spark jumped across the gap with the same intensity as had previously been performed with a closed circuit via the points and ignition in the distributor. Because the gap was then widened, it was thought that additional surface area would give a better and larger start to the ignition process and thus burn more A/F mixture during the same stroke. Also these CDI's could be slightly better timed in terms of exactly when the spark was released.
Efforts were made to control all of the above. Compression of the fuel; its mixture qualities; and the ability of the spark to propagate properly all changed as the revolutions per minute climbed up the tachometer range, or the useful range of RPM's within the cylinder as the car ran and the engine performed. Through computer controlled experiments in which values of valve overlap; degrees before or after top dead center where ignition occurs (timed over the length of the four-stroke process); design of intake and exhaust ports and the length of fuel rails, runners, etc. (has to do with cooling or chilling the A/F mixture and to some degree the so-called, "ram-air effect" of the charge even in naturally aspirated engines because of the characteristics of, "vacuum," within the intake runners and the exhaust manifolds (headers), cats, and exhaust pipes, mufflers and pipe exits to the outside environment of the air. Further controls were sought with the change of elevation where the engine was functioning, based upon changing elevations during hill and/or mountain driving. (This is because the greater the elevation, the, "thinner the air" becomes; that is the molecules of oxygen per volume become reduced. This pretty much concludes what this talk on coils and magnetism and induction and step-up and step-down coils and even the importance of lambda is all about. It is important to note that I don't understand 99% of what Matt Anderson presents and despite my discussion of the above, I don't really understand how to actually work with an internal combustion engine. Also, I barely hinted at pipe length on intake and exhaust and temperature controls of both A&F and the working engine. I also did not mention the two main manipulations of N.A. engines (Naturally Aspirated), that being forced induction. The two prime methods of forced induction are supercharging and turbo charging. A, "blower," or turbine unit or fan of some kind is used to force more air and fuel into the combustion chamber or cylinder: that is Supercharging and the air comes from outside the engine. Theoretically therefore the temperature of the charge is regulated more or less by the ambient air temperature in which the vehicle operates plus any heat generated by the running of the engine that heats the A/F mixture. Turbo charging takes spent gases that come out under quite a degree of heat from the combustion chamber during the exhaust stroke and gases and route some of these which are under pressure, back into the intake to force at a higher velocity a new charge into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke.
One last note that I recall. In any intake and exhaust movements of air and fuel within the restricted spaces of the intake and exhaust systems, something known as exhaust tuning also occurs. The same thing that astronomers and all forms of scientists have been studying for years about waves of sunlight and radio waves, also apply in the intake and exhaust systems. Control of the waves include both constructive and destructive waves and secondary waves that occur during the processes described previously. The lengths of runners and exhaust systems and their tuning, including types of bends and their number all have impact on efficiency of the internal combustion engine. Efficiency has improved over the history of the I.C.E. because of the development of precisely timed computer controlled ignitions; variable valve timing and exhaust flow. After all of that, the power generated at the crankshaft in the ICE, must be transmitted to the rear wheels and that has also been developed over time. But certainly a good percentage of the generated power to the crankshaft is lost during the transmission of power to the rear wheels. Matt Anderson can tell you a whole lot more about all of that, than I can. But this review has been fun and cathartic. AF

Which university are you teaching sir? I love your video so much, in fact in my life, I have never had the luck of having such a teacher or a professor with that amazing teaching like you. I did have an excellent professor in Social Economic Class but not any of physics and mathematics. My TA in University actually were my teachers, but not professors. Our professors in Toronto Canada usually delivered some lectures that had nothing to do with homework, and most of the time, we did not understand. Basically, they just throw a textbook at us and let us figure it out on our own in the university, and whether or not we failed or passed it was up to us. In high schools, teachers are working so hard to teach high school students, but most of the time, they chat over our voices, being rude, and had no appreciation. And we are high schools or elementary schools teachers are blamed for the by-products of our societies. I think teaching students know how to respect and appreciate teachers must come from the cultural framework and from a small child, not wait until they became adults, then it is too late.

When the plug was pulled from the socket, it wasn't the current change that caused the spark … it was the high voltage that caused the spark. A typical toaster uses 5 amp at 120 volts. Given that E = Ldi/dt, when the plug is pulled, dt is less than 1ms. Depending on the wire resistance and the coil inductance L, the current decays at a much slower rate. Therefore, E is equal to L x 5a / .001s. The voltage can easily be great than 5000 volts at the plug … that's the spark.

5.0-- He assigns Theta to the OBTUSE angle subtended by the 'plate' to Horizontal ?
To solve using COSINE requires ACUTE angle subtended by the 'plate' to VERTICAL
    being (Theta- 90)
Therefore 'plate angled/area presented to Horizontal'= 'plate area x COS(Theta-90)
BETTER alternative would be to solve using SINE -
assign Theta to the ACUTE angle subtended by the 'plate' to Horizontal
Thereby, 'plate angled/area presented to Horizontal'= 'plate area' x SINE.Theta
Trig seems tricky till we nail it, right guys ?

I have a question and I hope you answer..
You said that coils or inductors dont like the change in flux or the magnetic field, because that's nature! Or maybe its linked to energy conservation! But, what does really happen inside!? Whats the practical perspective of this!?
The second question, how did we know that phi=M.I, or in other words how did we know that the generated flux is linear with the current causing it?

in the toy train transformer problem you said the voltage has linear relationship with current but that’s only the case when resistance is same but ...in this case resistance should be different as the resistance is directly proportional to the length of the conductor which is different in primary and secondary coil ...so my question is why the resistance factor is considered same for both coils ??

Not sure I fully understand your question, but note that negative signs generally indicate direction. So the negative sign in Faraday's Law indicates the direction that the current will take. But it's easier to use Lenz's Law to determine this direction.

Hi Matt! small doubt, when we calculate flux of an angled object we used Flux = B*A Cosine, question is why did we use only cosine? why not sine.

    • @yoprofmatt
      @yoprofmatt  7 років тому +5

It's because of the way we define θ which is with respect to the surface normal (perpendicular vector pointing out of the surface). Thus cosθ gives us the amount of field "crossing" the surface, whereas sinθ would give us the field parallel to the surface. For flux we are interested in how many field lines cross the surface, thus we use cosθ.

    • Is light an electromagnetic wave?
    • Is our body electromagnetic?
    • What is the connection between disease and electromagnetic theory?
    • Is electromagnetic theory responsible for natural disasters?
    • Are there links to astrophysics and electromagnetic theories?
The purpose of this study is to explain why everything is electromagnetic.
Accordingly, we have heard of electromagnetism. Accordingly, we get an electromagnet when it takes a nail and passes it around the copper coil with the initial terminal of the copper coil and the opposite end of the copper coil. Thus the electromagnetic properties of the electromagnetic materials are emitted as waves of mixing.
The electronic devices we use, microwave ovens, cell phones, etc., are based on this.
But how many of us know that we and the other living things around us are basically working on these electromagnetic properties?
    Planets and electromagnetism:
Planets are also becoming magnetic. Navagrahas is a Sanskrit word meaning nine rulers.
As we have seen earlier, any object that revolves around positive and negative electric energy turns into an electromagnet.
Likewise, all the atoms in this phenomenon are rotating. Thus, when rotating, light is circulating on one side and darkness on one side. Thus, every cosmic atom is electromagnetic. Therefore, it is the force of gravity in every object.
Thus the planets, which are magnetic atoms, are exposed to the energy around them, including electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic waves, and electromagnetic radiation.
In doing so, the electromagnetic properties of the eigenvalues, with their characteristic capacitance and pulling properties, are modified. This causes natural changes, rages, and disasters to occur.
Our body is also electromagnetic, so our body, due to these electromagnetic properties, experiences growth, change, and disease.
Everything we see, dress, eat, wear and use is every kind of electromagnetic illusion. Therefore, every second is experiencing various physical and mental advances and troubles in our lives. Astrology is predicting this.
Changing nearby objects will change the result. This is Vastu, & witchcraft.
This science has been used by our ancestors in art and spirituality.
    Climate Change:
The above-mentioned seasonal changes occur only after a certain amount of electromagnetic radiation of a flower's flowering, preserving and bearing fruit has been matched to the fivefold composition of the material.
Likewise, electromagnetism causes every life and every atom to change from birth to death.
    Light & Electromagnetic Radiation:
According to today's science, electromagnetic radiation is the light. Accordingly, light is of two types: emitted light and reflected light. The photoelectric effect can be cited as an example.
    Photosynthesis:
Likewise, the received light contains the ores of the light source (asteroids and galaxies). Plants can combine such light to store those minerals as herbs and foods.
    Medical and Electromagnetic Theory:
When our body is deficient in immunity, the disease is caused by a deficiency of minerals in the body. Therefore, when the disease occurs, any minerals in the body are given to us as a drug, whether it is a drug or a chemical.
    Atomic and Electromagnetic Waves:
Practical science says that the nature of matter changes depending on how many orbits in an atom are present. According to practical science, the presence of electrons in the atom is the result of the control of the electrons in a substance, whether it is in solid, liquid, or gas state. The properties of cosmos.

  • @qualquan
    @qualquan 7 місяців тому

The Inductor converts part of the electric current called (I)=Q/t to magnetic flux (BA) . The magnetic field (B) itself is not energy. Energy (E) is a PRODUCT of the current (Q/t) and magnetic flux (BA). Thus E = 1/2 Q/t * BA or 1/2 (I )* BA. So B is just one factor of the energy equation. It is wrong to imply that B is energy or contains energy. Surprisingly B boils down dimensionally to 1/t or the reciprocal of time. The stronger the B the shorter the time interval and greater the velocity, acceleration, voltage and energy where time is the denominator.
Furthermore since E = 1/2 current * BA then for a GIVEN amount of E, when B or BA is increasing current or Q/t will be decreasing and if BA is decreaing then current must increase. L is just BA/I (in Ohm Sec) so E - L* I^2 = the old BA* (I). Point is the inverse relationship between BA and (I) for a fixed E does not require manufacturing te negative feed back of Lenz. because when E is fixed BA and (I) are MATHEMATICALLY inversely related. Analogous to F=ma.. Afterall there is no Lenz for F = ma is there?

Perhaps there is an explanation based on Faraday's own ideas. Because he was troubled by the notion of action at a distance, Faraday suggested the idea that there was a "field" which arises together with the time-varying magnetic field in the region occupied by the energised system. Maxwell took up the idea but tried to explain this by proposing a field of interacting vortices in the luminiferous aether.
We understand from our ideas in electrostatics that the only force which can cause a charge to move from a state of rest is an electric field. Magnetic fields can of course cause charged particles to change direction but only if the particle is actually moving relative to the magnetic field.
The conclusion typically drawn in physics literature is that the time-varying magnetic field causes a mutually induced electric field which acts along the closed loop path - and this causes a current to flow whilst the magnetic field continues to change with time. Other physics texts argue that the time-varying magnetic field is not the "cause" of the mutually induced electric field. Rather it is argued that both the primary induced magnetic field and the mutually induced electric field are effects of one and the same cause - the time varying current in the primary winding. This latter idea has some credibility, since the time-varying magnetic field strength near the closed secondary loop could be negligible - such as the case where the magnetic flux is confined to a highly permeable magnetic circuit. Negligible magnetic flux cuts the secondary loop conductor but current still flows in the secondary loop.
