The first moments of this film achieve something breathtaking with the swirling camera picking up all the period lusciousness, scenery, costumes, music. It all seems to build toward Bill Nighy's first appearance with that oh-so-careful hand on the brim of the hat in salutation to his staff through the window of the train. "Living" has a way of sneaking up on you, it's cool aloofness giving way to a moment halfway through where you realize how much you love it. The construction goes deeper, further than what could or should be an established, built-in ending into a thriving legacy/mystery which forces all of the other characters to come alive in a way Nighy's character only wishes he could before it's too late. The subtlety of bringing the soft spoken English mores into the climax couldn't be more hushed and muted but that's what makes it so meaningful, once the other characters are finally "Living."
