I think people need to stop stigmatizing other people for being on Medicaid. Low cost/free out-of-pocket healthcare should be a right. Even if it is taxpayer paid, no one, regardless of income should have to worry about affording to pay for healthcare and choosing to forgo treatment to avoid being in debt.

I agree, and it's probably the best part of Obamacare (other than their not being able to deny you coverage if you have a preexisting condition). Before expanded Medicaid, you couldn't get Medicaid unless there were children in the household.

To several commenters, quit with the bootstraps talk. Don’t assume a person’s life based on their opinions. I have a job that pays me more than the median household income in the U.S and I pay a huge amount in taxes. What do I get for my taxes, a volunteer firefighter who doesn’t get paid, a chance to get fleeced by privatized ambulance and get shot by the police? Yes, I do get benefits and my healthcare is tied to my job, something healthcare shouldn’t be tied to. It’s not a benefit when I have to pay a big chunk of my paycheck to have insurance and then have to still pay for treatment because a for-profit insurance company doesn’t want to pay the entire bill.
Tell you what, I’ve been to the other side, and I had Medicaid when I struggled but I never had to worry about getting sick and get in medical debt. Something that I worry about now because I’m paying more to get insurance and will still get into debt because I have to pay a deductible, co-insurance and my treatment options beholden to the whims of a claims adjuster. The system was always designed to benefit for-profit private insurance and healthcare companies.

In Pennsylvania not only do we have oil heat, we still have people whose main form of heat is wood, others use Soft Coal (Bituminous Coal) or Hard Coal (Anthracite Coal) and even propane for heating (Most propane is for cooking but some propane is used for heating). In the urban counties around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh you do not see Coal or wood furnaces (Excepted as secondary or supplemental heating) but once away from those areas and the other urban areas, oil heat is big, followed by coal and wood. furnaces

    • @paulmentzer7658
      @paulmentzer7658 11 місяців тому +1

@@GeeEm1313In Western Pennsylvania such stone furnaces tend to be either long abandoned Iron Furnaces or Coke Ovens. These were very profitable till about 1900 when the newer steel blast furnaces in the Mongohelia and Ohio River valleys starting in 1867 but coming into they own after about 1900.
As to the Coke Ovens, they were profitable till about 1900 when huge oven ovens opened up in the Pittsburgh area and other coal regions that drove the older stone Coke ovens unprofitable.
Please note traditional charcoal was made using wood based systems, so all that is left are small ash pit, as opposed to a stone furnace.

During the Great Depression a lot of homeless people ended up living in the old Coke ovens, most had only been abandoned for 20 to 30 years by the 1930s and being made from stone, a solid set of walls to keep the weather out and large enough to provide a very small apartment for a family and nearby was a large common outhouse that was still usable to keep the area free from most sanitary problems of so many people living close together.

When my husband was laid off several years ago, we applied for Medicaid here in CA because we had young children, I’m disabled and unable to work, the cost to use COBRA was astronomical, and the fines for not having insurance were huge too. We got Medicaid quite easily and my husband got a new job with insurance about 6 weeks later. It took 5 letters and 3 years before they finally took us off. So yes, I’m sure there are many Californians on Medicaid who don’t use it or don’t know they have it.

There are two kinds of Medicaid. I used to work in the system.
One sort is for a parent with dependent children with an absent parent - typically the father, since this is the way society trains men - to become irresponsible. Medicaid in such cases just comes along with the total package, meaning cash aid - "Aid to Parents with Dependent Children" - AFDC. And then there's a sort of Medicaid where the only benefit you get is exactly that - Medicaid. The qualifications are somewhat different.
It seems that the actual goal of Democrats is to have no less than 1/3 the population receiving some kind of public benefit - meaning welfare of one sort or another. I'm guessing the USA has the greatest dichotomy in the whole world between rich and poor. Not much of a middle class any more, which is very specifically the GOAL of Democrats. They believe they've ACHIEVED when they have the largest percentage of the population idle and dependent upon the government.

  • @Chiller11

Per capita is the only meaningful statistic if one wants to understand the real prevalence of people in a given state on welfare. I know when I lived there and was working all I had to do was pay $5 a month and my family of four had great medical insurance. No other state I have lived in has that option. That's probably why there's so many families on Medi-Cal in California.

In Eureka CA, the homeless get $675 a month, food stamps, free cell phones and internet service and get to camp wherever they want. Add that people can show up to an ER room and get free medical service as well. I get that especially now with our terrible economy these are difficult times for many. The issue I have is based on talking to local police and county and state employees, most of the homeless in Eureka are not from Eureka. It's wrong that people from other states can just show up and get welfare and food stamps. Eureka is in very rural Humboldt County and the tax base is really small and it really creates a mess because we don't have the resources. It's easy to complain but some ideas I'd like to see is have local restaurants and fast-food places cook extra food and get federal and state tax deductions for giving free food to those in need...

Expert in personal financial budgeting here. If you people knew even hallf of what I know, you'd freak out. There'd be all-out class warfare that would look less like a civil war and more like a total sociatal collapse.
Let me say this is clearly as I can...most people in the United States can't REALLY afford to live in the United States. Income inequality has reached levels that are simply too great.
And I'm not even talking about just the lower-class/middle-class (Just FYI, these definitions mean nothing. There's only the worker-class and owner/capitalist-class). Even people who drive a Lexus and have a nice pool in their backyard of their house. Just because you can pay the bills doesn't mean you can actually afford luving in America. It doesn't mean you're really free. Many people from real first world countries are starting to see America isn't as awesome as advertised.
But don't worry. There won't be a class war (not yet anyway). You're all too divided and, quite frankly ignorant of personal budgeting. All the oligarchs have to do is point a finger at a minority group and tell you to blame them. And you will fall for everytime. American history proved it during the Rockerfeller/JP Morgan/Carnegie days. And it proved it with Trump.
So get used to all the poverty because, deep down, you all know its going NOWHERE (Because it's not).

Hell, there was a brief period when I was a very young kid where my family hit the program in the mid 80s but my dad busted his ass, took night classes and we got off within one year and moved out of a crackhouse apartment into our home on the lowest possible survival income.
But it would be unfair to those who are truly struggling to act like there is not gross abuse in the system. We all know someone who either pile on the kids, comes up with a million reasons why they can't work or just flat out will tell you they won't work. And I will never support that.
