Kids often hang out in school during the school day because their home life is terrible, they don't want to be home, they don't want to be in class, but they can't be outside of the school without being harassed either. So they're in school, probably with friends, not having cops or anyone called on them, and not having to deal with everything going on at home.

yeah, this anime is a product of its time. i don't have all the facts, but somewhere around the 1980 to early 1990 there was apparently a real issue with teachers using "discipline" as an excuse to be borderline abusive in their practices in japan, and the type of punk counter culture that developed because of it that urameshi is a part of. after all, if the place that is supposed to educated you treats you like trash and a waste of time, no matter what you do, why even bother going? if you look back, there are actually quite a few manga and anime of the time that tackle the same issue, like GTO (great teacher onizuka) for example. although i don't think that one would be quite your cup of tea. it's pg13+ and pretty horny, especially early on, and focuses more on very unorthodox teaching methods. then again, it does portray a unique point of view from a person who was a victim of the failed education system, finding himself being part of the same system.

As far as I know… Japanese school uniforms are navy style. That’s why Keiko and Yusuke are dressed like that. I’ve seen military schools here in the U.S with a somewhat similar uniform
Makes sense…… in the U.S. if a school has a “uniform” it’s usually just khakis and a polo shirt. I haven’t seen a navy-style uniform here, but I’m sure it exists somewhere! 😂
Another series episode probably worth looking into would be Battle for Dream Island S1E3 - "Are You Smarter Than a Snowball", in which characters are given worksheets to fill out, though that doesn't begin to happen until around 2 minutes and 50 seconds into the episode. Other than that, the rest of BFDI generally has nothing to do with education. For some context, BFDI is an animated web series by the UA-cam channel jacknjellify in which anthropomorphic objects compete in a series of contests for a prize. (in the case of the first season, an island resort called Dream Island, hence the name) After each competition, viewers were instructed to vote on which member of the losing team would be eliminated (similar to how it works in shows like Survivor or Total Drama Island) and the results were subsequently revealed at the beginning of the next episode.
So I've been watching this show since I was in elementary school. I'm now nearly 30 and it's still one of my favorites. Great video thus far, but I think there are some cultural things that we as Americans just brush aside that actually bear much more importance in Japanese culture. Being class rep is one of those things. Considering they make students clean up classrooms daily, including things like the chalk erasers, i totally believe Keiko would have gotten repremanded for her fellow classmate not showing up. I used to have tea and baked goods every friday with my principal and a small group of other students. Only those that were in the know had any idea it would even happened. One of my favorite memories.
5:13 I think a few motives I’ve heard of are managing a top-secret black market-like facility (such as the one in the bathroom stall from The Simpsons) or simply trying to avoid getting caught if suspended or expelled. These aren’t the most common, but they’re the ones I know best.
6:40 the concept is more so to display that, the actions of the class is the responsibility of the class representative, just like with any team or group, when one player screws up, it makes the team look bad and the leader needs to correct that whether it be by setting a better example themself or by force/punishment. She may not have the capacity to enforce the rules with certain classmates like yusuke but then at that point the administration understands that she’s not a bad farmer, he’s just a bad apple But of course we know there’s a lot more behind that grouchy look yusuke gives everyone
16:48 After looking at pictures of Japanese uniforms, I can confirm that those look a lot like regular school uniforms. Military uniforms are more often green than blue.
You know there's life outside of school he actually helps protect order and safety for othe's like a deterrent for crime Despite his age it's like he's a one man gang, that protects his turf through his presence and reputation
Schools in Japan are super strict, and especially in the 90s I wouldn't be surprised by any of the things the teachers do here. And they absolutely do gaslight good students into feeling bad about the less fortunate students.
Your video got me curious about corporal punishment in Japan, so I looked it up. While most states in the US banned it before 2000, Japan didn't ban it completely until 2020. It was supposedly banned in schools back in 1947, but apparently this ban was not taken seriously. It was commonplace even as recently as 2010. Yu Yu Hakusho was first published in 1990, and according to a poll conducted by the Nichi Bei Times paper in 1987, 60% of junior high school teachers that year believed corporal punishment to be "necessary." Also, Japanese school uniforms were based on German infantry uniforms for the boys and German naval outfits for the girls, so you were on point when you said they looked military.
@@SchoolPrincipalReacts Wow, you're right. It's still legal in 17 states, including mine! Here in NC, the districts have all banned it, luckily. I edited my original comment to fix it. I don't know why the search engine spit out that date. I should have double-checked that part, too.
Keiko's friends talking about how yusuke "k!ll$ for fun" actually resonates with me. I was bullied through all of elementary school and most of my 7th grade year until someone actually punched me and i retaliated at a multi-school event. Fast forward 3 years when I was a sophomore in highschool and someone recognized me from the incident. He immediately started going off about how i smashed a chair over the kid's head when the reality was that i only punched him twice. Funny enough, the worst rumor came when my brother went to the same event and his classmates told him about how they heard from "a reliable source" that i k!lled the kid and that i was in jail. Rumors get out of hand very quickly.
Principal Takenaka does seem to care about Yusuke. Tbh I would never endorse hitting a student but that school is so violent, everyone just seems to communicate by throwing punches lol. Needs a maaaaaajor overhaul in policy if you ask me.
I think it's a thing few may notice, even though Takenaka has good intentions he is undermining his efforts by getting physical. This episode shows there are a variety of ways Yusuke is being failed by his school.
17:04 yes, this is known as the japanese tradition school uniform, and its quite common in school animes because thats been their go to uniforms. (Idk or think that is still the case) I also am unsure if anyone told you that this was made in the 90s 😅
@SchoolPrincipleReacts I think you would enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho. It's a good series. There are some other anime series that definitely has more of a school atmosphere.
I left my High School once because I thought it was after sixth period and I missed the bus!! So I tried to walk home, but I missed my turn and had to call my father and my grandfather because I stopped at a cab company!! But I later found that I left after fifth period ended and THAT'S why the busses weren't there!! 😂😂 I know, I'm a goof!! 😂😂
One thing I like about manga and anime series is the sheer amount of effort that schools put into “festivals.” I’ve seen a little of it in the United States, but I don’t think it’s nearly as extensive. Since Japan largely follows a homeroom system, I think the students become more of a community. thus, different classes will compete at the festivals with various booths, shows, and other activities to represent their class. Some of the series where I have seen this include #MyDressUpDarling #MyHeroAcademia #HitomeChanIsShyWithStrangers and #Inuyasha . Sometimes it will just be one episode. Other times it will be a full story arc spanning several episodes. Don’t know if I would have been into it when I was in high school, but it’s definitely something that I wish we had more of in the United States.
Lucky Star is a great slice-of-life anime; nearly all the episodes revolve around the school, and even the ones that take place outside of the classroom often involve the teachers
And don’t forget about the group of students who were happy about one of their classmates being dead. Yusuke may be the one with a reputation, but those kids make him look like a saint. 😤
This was written and produced in Japan in the early '90s. Although corporal punishment had been illegal since the mid-1900s, it was still quite prevalent at that time.
It’s very telling that you say yusuke was speaking in a manner that would get himself in trouble while his “you shouldn’t talk, it makes you sound stupid” comment is both called for and true. Faculty being ‘better and higher’ than students was the whole reason I dropped out. Plus, free speech is still a right even as a child. Short of threats or hate speech a SMART educator would just respond accordingly to a quip or snide remark.
This episode originally aired in Japanese language in October 1992, before we had access to the internet. I am shocked to see the principal resorting to physical actions (e.g. ear pulling) on the minor student. However in episode 3, the principal is more refined. On the other hand, there is no channel like you who make educational reaction videos, who educates and explain about their experiences.
You should watch High School the Dead anime about high school kids trying to survive a zombie apocalypse and how they work together and develop great friendships
Scrolled a bit and didn't see this mentioned: the gum was actually a cigarette in the manga, very confusing as a child to see Keiko and Takenaka not let Yusuke have some gum
I have the same questions as you about how he’s even enrolled if he’s a known serial killer. He should probably be in some kind of education program administered by the prison or some other legal system. I’ve seen JJAEP before, but I don’t know how they handle this in Japan.
Honestly, I hate how those students were happy about the death of a classmate and weren’t called out for it by the principal. That school may put a lot of focus into grades, but the teachers there (aside from the principal) aren’t good at judging a person’s character.
Its not necessarily school related, but it involves 2 teachers and the principle at his funeral. It would have been cool to get your opinion on that. Its in this episode if I remember correctly.
5:22 family issues, they are at school so aren't lying when asked where they where all day, participanting is not apart of their agenda. 13:25 and thats why American Kids still act like kids, they were never taught how too be treated as adults.....
There are also some anime movies that contain extensive scenes in schools. A few that come to my mind are #TheGirlWhoLeaptThroughTime , and to a lesser extent #WhisperOfTheHeart and #WolfChildren . I think there are others that take place more primarily in a school environment, and I would recommend exploring that.
I know it's not related to your theme here, but even if not for you channel and for your own free time, you should watch the whole series. It generally covers a lot of human themes really well, but in particular, it follows Yusuke's growth from his more negative traits in a really grounded and realistic ways that I feel a lot of other shows don't, and as someone that has to oversee the growth of kids, you might have a particular appreciation for how it's handled.
I am probably wrong, but I think Japanese schools have Class Presidents who basically are suppose to enforce the rules on the rest of their class and if someone is breaking them they can also get in trouble for it.
@@SchoolPrincipalReacts I was reading a bit about it. Depending on which school could change their responsibilities. Some are there to make announcements and take role call. While others might be the leader of the classroom who makes sure certain tasks get done like cleaning the classroom or even resolve disputes between classmates. My personal guess is they encourage this for students as a way to get some experience as being a leader of a group or maybe experience in a management position for later in life.
He doesn't kill for fun and actually helps people its more he beats up bad people and others pick fights with him a lot because hes the strongest if i beat him up ill be the best he even helped his so called rival so called by said rival but to yusuke hes not a actual rival
Now as for the mother not caring , based on her tone Id say she DID care at some point but the shits been going on long enough and not changing so at this point shes tired and done with it? that can happen can it not? I mesan whats that saying? "You can lead a horse to water but you cant force it to drink"
Yusuke = ichigo Botan = Rukia Kuwabara = renji Kurama and hiei = uryu and Chad Keiko....no she's not some god defying super being like Orihime also keiko doesn't scream SAVE ME SAVE ME all the time.
sorry teacher dude but its only cause I disliked my teachers and they disliked me or ignored me making me feel like what am I even doing here if they dont care
A very good one you could watch is Card Captor Sakura (japanease version with subtitles pls, unfortunately the dubbing isn't good and they changed a lot of things when it went to America, like the order of the episodes and cutting episodes), more than half of CCS takes place on a day-to-day normal Japanese school and he touches on very delicate topics such as a romantic relationship between an adult teacher and a student.
Teachers and principal definitely shouldn’t hit students. But are they allowed to defend themselves? I heard about a teacher taken a phone away from a teenage student and she pepper sprayed him in his eyes, twice I think. Another instance, probably an elementary school or middle school, a teacher took a student’s Nintendo Switch away and he stated beating her on the ground. Would they have been allowed to defend themselves, or would that be a firing? Would the students not get in that much trouble?
Teachers (along with everyone) have the right to defend themselves. A lot of people get confused though about what “defending yourself” actually means. If you’re a teacher or principal, and you get attacked, you can use physical force to defend yourself and get the person off you. If they are no longer attacking you, it doesn’t mean you can turn around and attack them back. It’s helpful to be aware of how things will be perceived when they are investigated afterwards, too, and how they will look on camera. 👍
The creator of yu yu hakesho got married to the creator of sailor moon and the Creator of sailor moon did some shading for hunter x Hunter manga which is the same creator of yu yu hakesho and sailor moon the fans call her dumb but she got into one of the top schools in Japan and with how they grade things and everyone else being way smarter then her she's going to look dumb in comparison it's like putting Albert Einstein in a room filled with everyone else being brainic hes smart to us but dumb to them

I think you'll find episode 3 of Yu Yu Hakusho interesting as a principal.
I just filmed it!!!!! It was super crazy 😂😂😂😂😂
You’ll see it in a couple of weeks after editing and upload. 👍
6:40 the concept is more so to display that, the actions of the class is the responsibility of the class representative, just like with any team or group, when one player screws up, it makes the team look bad and the leader needs to correct that whether it be by setting a better example themself or by force/punishment. She may not have the capacity to enforce the rules with certain classmates like yusuke but then at that point the administration understands that she’s not a bad farmer, he’s just a bad apple
But of course we know there’s a lot more behind that grouchy look yusuke gives everyone
Every time Yusuke tries to chew a piece of gum, it's censoring he was trying to light up a cigarette
Ahhhh ok interesting!
16:48 After looking at pictures of Japanese uniforms, I can confirm that those look a lot like regular school uniforms. Military uniforms are more often green than blue.
?!?! You're reacting to this show now? I never thought you would react Yu Yu Hakusho, I just figured you never react anime. Or something like that.
It was a viewer recommendation! 😎👍
You know there's life outside of school he actually helps protect order and safety for othe's like a deterrent for crime Despite his age it's like he's a one man gang, that protects his turf through his presence and reputation
Interesting take 👍
Schools in Japan are super strict, and especially in the 90s I wouldn't be surprised by any of the things the teachers do here.
Yu Yu Hakusho was first published in 1990, and according to a poll conducted by the Nichi Bei Times paper in 1987, 60% of junior high school teachers that year believed corporal punishment to be "necessary."
Also, Japanese school uniforms were based on German infantry uniforms for the boys and German naval outfits for the girls, so you were on point when you said they looked military.
America never banned it, and schools still do it today in some places. Interesting though.
@@SchoolPrincipalReacts Wow, you're right. It's still legal in 17 states, including mine! Here in NC, the districts have all banned it, luckily. I edited my original comment to fix it. I don't know why the search engine spit out that date. I should have double-checked that part, too.
nice to see people watch this show, its really good in the later seasons
Anime's typically take place in Japan, so you'll usually see Japanese everything
True, especially the names.
Principal Takenaka does seem to care about Yusuke. Tbh I would never endorse hitting a student but that school is so violent, everyone just seems to communicate by throwing punches lol. Needs a maaaaaajor overhaul in policy if you ask me.
Yes!!!! 😂
(Idk or think that is still the case)
I also am unsure if anyone told you that this was made in the 90s 😅
Yes it is quite old now 👍
Another good show from back in the day was Big Time Rush and the episode Big Time School Of Rocque is a good episode to react to
Thanks!
I dont know whats going on this year but I love that Yu Yu Hakusho is getting so much attention!
😀👍
@SchoolPrincipleReacts I think you would enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho. It's a good series.
There are some other anime series that definitely has more of a school atmosphere.
Been watching your Ned's Declassified reactions & would never have imagined you reacted to YYH. Awesome
Thanks! Hopefully you enjoyed it!
I think the public announcements that summon a student to the office have been phased out in favor of paper slips delivered to the classrooms.
Wish you would’ve commented on what the teachers said at the funeral 😢 they are downright sad and disgusting 😢
Wow 😮
Hey notice this principal and Mr. Takanaka are wearing the same color suit.😂😂
Yep! Totally unintentional! 😂
Iwamoto and Akashi are the worst types of teachers; you'll meet them later
Yes!!!!! They were horrible in episode 3! 😂
Once you get deep into this series, it gets really dark......But totally unrelated to school.
Great video!
Thanks 😊
This episode originally aired in Japanese language in October 1992, before we had access to the internet.
I am shocked to see the principal resorting to physical actions (e.g. ear pulling) on the minor student. However in episode 3, the principal is more refined.
On the other hand, there is no channel like you who make educational reaction videos, who educates and explain about their experiences.
Thanks for the feedback! 👍
Remember this is also based in the 90s and/or the order late 80s There wasn't a lot more freedom of expression good or bad with less consequence
I haven't looked at his reaction list, but anyone else agree Great Teacher Onizuka would be interesting to react to.
I will jot it down! 👍
I have the same questions as you about how he’s even enrolled if he’s a known serial killer. He should probably be in some kind of education program administered by the prison or some other legal system. I’ve seen JJAEP before, but I don’t know how they handle this in Japan.
Darn, you missed the best part; the funeral. I don’t know a single person who didn’t cry or get choked up by that scene.
Awww you didnt finish the episode. The latter half really does show a lot of these characters in a better light
Actually in Japan going to the roof is forbidden and most of the time the door is closed
Thanks 😊
I am probably wrong, but I think Japanese schools have Class Presidents who basically are suppose to enforce the rules on the rest of their class and if someone is breaking them they can also get in trouble for it.
Interesting
@@SchoolPrincipalReacts I was reading a bit about it. Depending on which school could change their responsibilities. Some are there to make announcements and take role call. While others might be the leader of the classroom who makes sure certain tasks get done like cleaning the classroom or even resolve disputes between classmates.
My personal guess is they encourage this for students as a way to get some experience as being a leader of a group or maybe experience in a management position for later in life.
It would be interesting to do a commentary on a circumculum masters versus a teaching masters in education, through your experience.
Do one on the prurd family
Yusuke = ichigo
Botan = Rukia
Kuwabara = renji
Kurama and hiei = uryu and Chad
Keiko....no she's not some god defying super being like Orihime also keiko doesn't scream SAVE ME SAVE ME all the time.
sorry teacher dude but its only cause I disliked my teachers and they disliked me or ignored me making me feel like what am I even doing here if they dont care
Thanks
You should totally react to #MyHeroAcademia . I can’t vouch for accuracy, but I like that it takes place in a Japanese academic environment.
Coming soon! 😎👍
A good series for an educator would be GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)
Got it!
If you react to movies I want to hear your input on a movie Called Middle school the worst years of my life.
wait... wheres episode #2???
Sorry. I just did the ones that were recommended by viewers.
The creator of yu yu hakesho got married to the creator of sailor moon and the Creator of sailor moon did some shading for hunter x Hunter manga which is the same creator of yu yu hakesho and sailor moon the fans call her dumb but she got into one of the top schools in Japan and with how they grade things and everyone else being way smarter then her she's going to look dumb in comparison it's like putting Albert Einstein in a room filled with everyone else being brainic hes smart to us but dumb to them
Interesting!
There are not many episodes in this show involving school, so I'm not sure if you should watch the whole thing.
I won’t watch the whole thing, just the couple that were recommended. 👍
@@SchoolPrincipalReacts i see
1ST 2ND 3RD 4TH
Also in Japan things are very different. Not the good kind of different either
I see!
Classroom of the elite would be awesome for you to watch
You should watch the original japanese dubbed with english subtitles. Sounds more authentic and less censored with their original voices
No 😂
They sound flat in the original
