In 1964 I was 12 years old. The Beatles had "hit the scene" and even in my small Texas ranching and farming community, kids my age were suddenly aware of their music and the 4 lads were making music unlike anything we had ever heard before. Before that I listened to Elvis and the Beach Boys. But this new sound, most importantly, was "our" music. The squares didnt get it, boy but we did. So when this album came out. We slapped it in our turntables and listened. Once we got over our dissapointment that there was only some corny symphony music, we began listening to the boys intently, we hung onto every word, because there were no cell phones, 3 channels on tv (which was in the living room controlled by our parents) no computers, and no internet. So what we had was our turntables. So we loved it. It was our guys talking to is. Everybody bought it and we all played it. That's why it went so high on the Billboard charts. I still have my copy, I never listen to it, but I can still quote certain lines from it. Thanks for posting and bringing back so many fond memories. Those were complicated times then too, but in our rooms, with our turntables, we felt complete.

My copy is on Apple and I think I've listened to it only once in about 45 years!

You have to look at this album in the context of when it was put out. As a first generation fan, this was a way to hear the voices of the fabs whenever we wanted. There was no way to hear them talk back then unless you heard them on radio or on tv. Of course looking at it now doesn’t give you much to write home about but back then it was more essential.

It's a shame that "The Beatles Story" has never been issued as a standalone CD as it would be nice to complete the US canon without going to the expense of a box set.

The part that gives me the chills is on disk one, when the narrator says: “…but what is that makes the Beatles great?” And “I want to hold your hand” starts.

I've owned the Beatles Story for more than half a century, the stereo version. I was fascinated with it as a child, much as I was with anything Beatle-related. I also appreciated the Hollyridge Strings versions of Beatles songs playing in the background. It was a fun, yet somewhat fabricated story, with obvious mistakes. For example, with some of the interview pieces they might say "George Harrison explains," and then suddenly you hear Paul McCartney's voice speaking. I remember seeing The Beatles Tapes in the stores in the mid-70s. I think that started the trend of unofficial releases popping up in stores. The Star Club album came out shortly afterward, which I also purchased. I also purchased the Decca album back then, which was just in a regular store as though it was an official release. The Beatles had their hands full trying to get these albums removed around this time. Only the Hollywood Bowl was official at the time.

The epitome of Capitol's insatiable greed concerning the Beatles.

The Beatles Tapes was released in 1976. It got a lot of free publicity from the Beatles as they tried unsuccessfully to block its release. In the ‘80s it got a CD re-issue too.

A bit of useless trivia for you Brian. The Wigg LP features musical interludes by The Martyn Ford Orchestra that featured a harmonica player called Graham Smith, who had many credits as a session musician in the 1970's, including a track that features on the CD re-issue of Nilsson's "Son Of Schmilsson" album which also features George, Ringo and Klaus Voorman.

I took it out as a library loan when I was a teenager. That satisfied my curiosity. Good you discussed it, provides another aspect of The Beatles history. PS- like to revisit The Beatles Tapes- David Wigg.

Strangely enough, I received a copy of the Beatles Tapes in the mail this very week. In the pre-internet days, a double album full of interviews was certainly big deal. For years, I owned the CD. (Have no idea what the contents of "The Beatles Story" are!)

I think you could make the argument that another Beatles album you don't need is Capitol's Early Beatles. If I want those songs, my first choice is "Please Please Me." My second choice if I want those songs is "Introducing The Beatles."
Thank you for the video and content as always. It's a shame The Beatles' Story isn't more interesting as the front cover is very cool

I disagree this official beatles album is a musical documentary. Since it is an official release it should be included. Without this LP the beatles story your beatles collection can't truely be called comeplete.

It's not an official album. It's like all early US Beatles albums ... an excuse by Capitol to make money.

If you watch the full video you will see that I give my reasons for keeping it in my collection. I’m saying the casual fan doesn’t need it. I also list the reasons for that. Again, if you watched the full video you might know that.
