  • The U.S. Marine Corps released video of modern ship-launchable and ship-recoverable 8×8 wheeled combat vehicles, known as Amphibious Combat Vehicles (ACV).
On 13 March, the official Twitter account of U.S. Marine Corps posted a video of new Amphibious Combat Vehicle and added that vehicle is off the tracks.
The ACV performs best in class mobility in all terrains and has a suspended interior seat structure for 13 embarked Marines, blast-mitigating positions for a crew of three, and improved survivability and force protection over currently fielded systems.

An amphibious vehicle that's fast is an extremely difficult exercise in engineering. Speed on land, speed in the water, crew protection and decent fire power. Not an easy thing to design. They've been at it since WWII.

As a former crewman on the AAV, my guess is that like its older brother, this vehicle is loaded with more compromises than marines, less firepower than it needs, more maintenance requirements than can be performed to keep it rolling, armament systems that dont work in the field. I hope I'm wrong, but that was my experience with the P7.

Dad was at the invasion of Salerno in 1944. Remember the brilliant opening scenes in Saving Private Ryan. Well they were staging in rough seas for hours and everyone was terribly sick. Every guy screamed to get on land. When they landed under heavy fire with only one way to go...ahead. what balls.

Comments about the suspension being "rough" seem true. Launching into relatively calm water looked like a roller coaster ride. [Strategically placed barf bags might save one or 2 getting sick from the sick might they not?]
If a commander could get a diesel fuel additive [like Power Supply Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost] to baby the diesel engines from time to time, would that make sense? [One of the vehicles put out much less black smoke than the others. Making it less visible.]

But your chickenshit navy released your amphib tanks too early into very deep water and, in the very high seas of that day, plunged straight to the bottom. This meant your troops, unlike the Brits and the Kanuks who took their beaches relatively easily, were without heavy armour backup. This is why you took four times more casualties on the day than we did, and why you got stranded on the beaches and nearly lost us all the goddam fucking day. Read some history books over there sometime.

I'd be nervous about riding below deck if that driver hatch leads to the main compartment. Even on a calm sea, thee trick was riding very low in the water. It looked like a moderate swell could fill up the cabin and cause the whole thing to sink like a rock. They probably have some kind of safety measure against that - but I didn't see one here.

New does NOT always mean better. First off, with that brief view of the interior - try stuffing a full Marine infantry squad in there .. and their gear, ammo, food, personal gear, water, ect ... and there is NO space. You're going to have exhausted Marines piling out of the back of that thing; not even adding in what a rough/bouncy ride does to a combat trooper. And yes, while it is faster on land, it will not be able to transverse rough, soggy, sandy terrain as well as tracks. And overall, this vehicle is designed for the recent past and current conflicts the Marines are engaged in. If you send this into the larger scale, conventional conflicts the US is looking at in the near future (ie, North Korea, China, and Russia) you're going to be looking at a lot of dead Marines. I have major doubts the armor can withstand even the more advanced anti-armor RPG rounds you see these days, much less 30mm API or dedicated ATGW's. Not to mention, it has next to no weaponry of its own. Congratulations Marine Corp, you have your very own version of the LCS. Yeah its all sleek and can go fast on paved roads but beyond that .. the price tag and anything your future enemies will do is going to be extremely painful.
