For those who would consider car/minivan camping in winter I would use a car cover (or 2, why not?). I used to live in Chicago and always used a car cover in winter. There is at least a 10-20 degree F difference, and I have NEVER been unable to start my then 20 year old car, plus I have never needed gloves to start driving. So that is my plan when I will be winter camping. Just beware of the effect of freezing water -say freezing rain, you may have to wait for the sun or you car being warm enough...as the cover will be stuck to the car (yes it did happen to me). Slim your videos are just magical, between the quality of the shots and the editing they get you into the soul of each place. The humor is appreciated as well.
I must say your vids are akin to old cowboy poets of the west. So well done and enjoyable. Very happy I discovered your posts. Perhaps I’ll see the places you feature when I hit the road.
I don’t know how I missed this video from two years ago. Slim your videos are great. Funny, informative and often philosophical. Thank you for being such a positive force in world that has become somewhat ugly. I retire in a few years and that is when I plan to really get into boondocking. I am taking lots of notes 😊. I miss Albert.
You are on "propane" and I have become addicted to your videos, good trade! Winter in the snow is really beautiful, the snow muffles all the noises and the silence is majestic. Snowflakes look like diamonds and it is just fun. But, after living too many winters in Minnesota (one of the coldest places on earth) I am ready to start rving and looking for sunny days. The cold is easy to prepare for, the gloomy dark days... I had enough of that, I need sunshine on my shoulders, makes me happy!
Oh I agree, winter camping is great. I camped in a popup in the snow. Got up early morning after a fresh snowfall to look for animal tracks in the woods. It was interesting and I did find some. It was a very wet, heavy snow and a young tree bent over in front of my car, blocking it. Thankfully, it sprang back up after I knocked all the heavy snow off. I was in a state park and had electricity, so no problem keeping warm and I had hot meals. Enjoyed your video. The fire looked great. So did the candy bar :)
I've been following your videos for a while now and I truly enjoy them. You have inspired me to begin plans to get my own camper trailer. I really like...no, LOVE...all the customization you've done to your trailer. I've decided to adopt many of your modifications for the trailer I plan on getting. And thank you for your list of items that will freeze, I have no doubt you just saved me from having to learn a few things the hard way, lol.
i applaud you, slim. you get out there & overcome all obstacles & look what you enjoy by doing so! absolutely gorgeous surroundings! i am very happy in my 13ft casita patriot deluxe (deluxe means full wet bath in casita language). i've done a bit of winter camping but not to your extreme here in north texas. there are a few "all season" trailers like 1.bigfoot 2.escape 3.oliver but i've never seen the need for one. obviously you do just fine too in your aliner. keep up the adventures & please continue to share them with us. safe travels.......
Another great video. I agree, may as well use the camper when you can. Winter has plenty of beauty. You prepare well. Good info. You crack me up, very humorous. 😂👍👍
Your videos are always inspiring and soooo informative . . . just love your sense of humor too :D That Oh Henry bar . . . I almost fainted, LOL!!! Thanks, Slim . . . safe and happy travels.
Folks told the Wright brothers they were crazy and would die. Continue to “Hike your own hike “ Have been dog sledding along Canadian border and sleeping in the snow at -36F and will do it again. Personally, enjoying your vids.
I have my FR A-frame set up in my side yard with an extension cord and a little heater like you have. I've winterized it, as far as draining everything, but want to use it to head south soon. Meanwhile, it's my little getaway space when I want quiet. The heater keeps it in the 60's no problem.
just found your chan. a few days ago. great vids im def. a new sub.! I am with you 100% on winter camping. I don't use a camper I sleep in a hammock, on a canvas tarp, in a shelter or at times a tent. I love the outdoors & winter camping is def. my fav. activity to do & I am by no means an extremist lol thx for sharing your adventures slim.
Hi Slim. I too love winter camping. Winter is actually my favorite season. Something about cold that cleans the air and when it snows it really adds to nature's beauty. One suggestion for you. I see you are wearing blue jeans. Wearing anything cotton in the winter when outdoors is not a good idea. If you sweat on it it will not dry. Same if you spill anything wet on it. I suggest all synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon. Other than that you have it down well. Look forward to more of your adventures.
Hi John, Glad to hear you like winter as well. Yes, synthetics and snow pants are a great idea when I do deep snow mountain hikes and snowshoeing. This trip was more laid back around the fire, with a warm dry trailer is just a short distance away. Thanks!
Nice video on Winter camping. Here in Central California there are plenty of places to camp without snow, but its still below freezing at night in many places. I try and camp by the coast in the Winter time for the best weather. My 2000 watt Honda generator comes along every trip if I'm boon docking.
Excellent!! We live in Arkansas (Ozarks) now, but husband is from Wisconsin and I'm from Ohio--not unfamiliar with snow. We always carried cheap-o kitty litter in the back of the vehicles for traction. Alcohol in a spray bottle as a defroster (windshield washer fluid works too). And space blankets/cheap-0 down blankets--not so much for us as for those who didn't come prepared. We're considering a Lowe's bucket w/toilet seat and kitty litter as our toilet solution. Your thoughts? Just bought our Aliner and have been binge-watching Slim Potatohead videos in preparation for our first camperventure.
Hi Donna, sounds like you've got a good plan. Although kitty litter may be good for ice, I don't think it will help in sand or mud. Pick up at least one real traction aid for your travels. Good Luck! SP
Your enjoying it, you do it, your not just talking about it. Here parks are closed in winter, fundy national park use to and stopped , I guess this yr there going to start it again
When at a campground without power, it will be interesting to see how well my solar unit (Renogy 200w suitcase) does in keeping the battery charged enough to run my Ranger's furnace fan, and lights.
Hi zendt66, I use 200W panels for the same purpose. Most of the year it is quite adequate, including daytime running of the cooler on warm sunny days. In extreme cold and with the sun low on the horizon it's more of a challenge for more than a couple of days. The power pig is the furnace fan! Thanks
Slim, if I may, the small battery charger is to connect to your car battery overnight to keep it warm all night while you sleep and to help start your car in the morning.
Caddyshackesk...funny stuff! I love camping in the winter. I'm hoping to break my little home made stove out soon. I made mine out of a propane bottle.
Lol I showed my 12 yo and cracked up...thx for the good laugh😂🤣 which you’re never short on thx for sharing...and yeah caddy shack is too one of my favorite movies
Hey SP, great video once again. My wife and I just picked up our Aliner this week. We drove 6 hours to get it, was a great deal, BUT, had to drive in black ice and slushy brown salt to get it out of Sudbury. Once out, hotel was imminent and necessary. Was minus 27 plus windchill. What a mess the trailer is, wiped off most of the salt now.Going to test our winter camping guts in our driveway this weekend to see what will work, and what will not. Thanks for your inspiration and wisdom. We will be trying a bunch of your suggestions for winter prep of an Aliner.
Congrats on your new Aliner Axeman! Yes, salt is one of the worst enemies of a trailer. Please get it powerwashed or to a carwash ASAP, as corrosion damage happens pretty fast, specially underneath. All the Best on your future travels! SP
@@SlimPotatohead Thanks SP. Yes, this is my plan for tomorrow, as I tried to use my home hose, but, it froze on me even in the garage, would not work when I connected it. So, off to an indoor self wash place up to the road. I plan on making a top or cover for my Aliner made of Tyvek material or what is called house wrap. This material is made to breath while allowing moisture out and keeping weather out as well. I plan to wrap the Aliner so it is protected from roof, to sides and will install round gromets to hold it down with bungie cords. Ontario has Salty roads, but I want to winter camp so badly, I have to find a way to protect my little camper. :-) Thanks for replying SP, you are the greatest. If you ever need some guitar music to add to your channel, let me know, I am a writer and guitarist, multi instrumentalist and would do it happily for you. Just tell me the mood you want, and I will record ideas and sent them your way, no cost of course, its my hobby, not my occupation. :-)
Sounds like you have a good plan. Yes, Ontario winters can be nasty! I'd always be happy to feature music from my talented viewers, with full credits of course. My email is on the "about" section of my channel. Thanks! SP
@@SlimPotatohead That is awesome SP. I will write some suitable material and send it your way. Something fun to do and gives me a purpose to do it, because I love watching your channel, even when you talk, because, you always have something good to say. Cheers! Al
Have you ever experimented with skirting the trailer to keep the floor warmer and I guess the entire camper? I figure foam board and some small Velcro circles would do a great job
Hi Slim! This is a great winter camping video! I wish I could find a campground in NYS that has electric! Where did you find winter camping with electric available? Thank you so much. ~ Maria

OK. OHH Henry. Glad you told us that you hadn’t used that bag yet! Love your videos but I don’t think I could handle that much COLD. Maybe my Aliner could (with your suggested modifications).
I have never enjoyed cold weather! The coldest place I was in would be Korea! I was born in Texas and lived most of my life here. Enough temp differences in Texas! But I am seriously looking at getting a used Aliner and applying most of your upgrades to it.

Love your humor ! And your beer stays cold too !!
Ken I ikr love his humor, candidacy and honesty! I love winter camping, not many get it, so I’m glad there are others that like it too.
I also love winter camping, especially because the crowds are gone. My favorite was Yosemite National Park in the snow. Very peaceful and quiet. John

Very funny with the Oh Henry bar! It reminded me of the Baby Ruth scene in Caddyshack. Love your vids, man.
That little heater is the best heat source. Enjoying your video so much tips to learn.

Enjoying the show

Here's where I throw in the towel. It's the 1st week of October and I already miss summer. My outdoor adventures will be ending until next spring.
I was laughing as you sit there without a hat in the ice- snow. Your SUV looks similar to my Jeep. An A-Liner Would work!
