- In this video, I discuss and celebrate my 5 year anniversary of making vinyl videos. I discuss the good and the bad about being in the vinyl community and how I feel about my passion for vinyl after all of these years. I do bring up some negativity but the good far outweighs the bad.

I am also not only vinyl, because Cd Technology has so much evolved… that it surpasses some records… definitely depends of your Cd player.. and processor/ preamp (Oppo are so much musical and missing) I rediscovered a lot of beautifully remastered audio.) but Vinyl is always beautiful… artistic work… the best simple affordable music format. Period!

Love this video, Melinda. I’ve met some great people through the vinyl community that I have no doubt will be friends for life. As much silly nonsense occurs, if someone in the VC has a problem, everyone seems to come together and help them out. It’s of course nice to have found other collectors, because my friends think I’m nuts. IMO, there’s nothing wrong with monetizing one’s channel, and just be kind to each other. It really is easier than being a jerk…lol. Congrats of 5 years, Melinda! 🥳🔊🎶

On this happy landmark for your channel, here's one of the ways I appreciate your work.
Representation matters. Most youtube channels about vinyl and hi-fi are run by men, mostly middle-aged white guys (like me).
My wife and I are super happy together. But she doesn't get my obsession with vinyl collecting and hi-fi gear (she accepts it, but doesn't get it or have any interest in it).
A couple months ago, I was watching one of your videos and she was in the room. She saw & heard you in the video. She was interested, and stopped and watched the rest of the video with me. She asked if we could watch another of your videos, and we did.
You didn't convert her into a vinyl enthusiast. But your video spoke to her. She started to understand my passion for vinyl, because she saw you, someone like her, who has this same passion and is super articulate and interesting and relatable.
Over the years, she's also been in the room when I've watched videos by Michael 45rpm and other male youtube channels, and none of them ever caught her interest or spoke to her the way your videos did.

Melinda, congratulations for being in the book! You deserve it! Collecting vinyl for some can be a lonely pastime and your channel, among others, makes vinyl collectors feel connected to a community and therefore feeding joy to the loneliness that can sometimes occur. Congrats on 5 years Melinda! That is something! Sorry to be 3 days late, but the whole new year thing is rough on me as I am still denying 2024 is even here. Also congrats on being in the book! That is really cool! Wow, I don't think that is something I could ever agree to for myself if I was asked. I am extremely introverted, I think it is the ultimate way to protect myself, but it comes at a high price.
My philosophy is "Never turn down a free record"! If you like it, then it gives ample opportunity to be very grateful, if you don't like it one can still show gratefulness by giving it away or something like that "if permitted". Those that claim you are grifting or fake or something just because you got a free record or whatever are simply super jealous and can't control themselves or put themselves in the shoes of others on anything. Their universe does not extend beyond their own nose. They don't even stop to think that they don't have such opportunities because they are not grateful and more so likely because they don't have a channel or are in the hobby at all! It is called ignorance.
As for UA-cam pay, what pay. Even those who claim to make $2000 or $3000 per month or more on UA-cam are not telling the truth. UA-cam pays next to nothing. I will never understand how some of these people choose to quit a well paying job/career to do UA-cam fulltime thinking they will make a fortune. UA-cam is mostly just hardwork and not that inexpensive when one considers the hobby one is Youtubing about.
As for being a part of the vinyl community. I'm not clear on what you said about even if one just watches videos one is part of the community. I just don't see how that can be personally, just my personal understanding or lack thereof. Being part of a community requires action and acceptance of said community.
Personally, I don't think I am part of the vinyl community and never will be because my practical and venerate approach to it ruffles too many feathers. In other words, I am in it for the music and historical significance 100% and I don't listen to music less than maybe 20 years old or more.
That said I am fixing to attempt making a UA-cam channel mainly to share my collection and the music I listen to starting by end of this month. As to when the first video will be posted? I have no clue, it could even be never as I do not know what I am doing when it comes to UA-cam. I know my content backwards and forwards, but doing UA-cam, it may be best to keep me away from it. My channel will strictly be about sharing, period. UA-cam is not cheap (nor easy) to do and I do not have the capital so the channel will likely fail shortly after leaving the gate, but I just want to see if I can do it. I don't care about algorithms, etc. I will never monetize beyond affiliate marketing, if that (which pays far less than UA-cam). Patreon, sponsorships and the like are the things of nightmares as far as I am personally concerned.
I can't be in front of a camera either and that alone will keep one out of a community on UA-cam.
Hello and happy new year. Thank you for the kind words.To make real money on UA-cam, you have to get hundreds of thousands of views of not millions on a weekly basis. Vinyl record collecting isn't the easiest format for big views.

What I love about your channel is your enthusiasm of collecting vinyl. I received the "Now And Then" 12 inch record from my wife for our 60th anniversary and really enjoyed it. We then caught Covid and haven't celebrated Christmas yet and I am sure that I will get more vinyl and can't wait! Congrats on 5 years and keep up the awesome job!!

First and foremost congrats on five years! I’ve been a regular viewer since about 2019 I think. What I like about your channel is you’re just one of us, you’re not a record store or a promoter, you’re just a fan who likes to talk about records. I tried making a video a while back. I was talking about the then just released Jackson 5 “Greatest Hits” reissue that uses the rare Japanese mixes. I talked about some other things as well. Then I went back to watch it before posting it and I couldn’t get thru it. Although I thought what I was discussing was interesting, I hated watching myself and how I spoke. So I never posted it. Perhaps one day I’ll give it a go again.
Regarding anyone who has a problem with monetizing or getting free albums, that’s just jealousy pure and simple. I like that you talk about the Elemental Music albums for instance, I’ve gotten several of them because YOU spoke about them. I would not have known about them otherwise. So you’re doing your “job” as far as that goes.
Anyhow, can’t wait to see what’s coming down the road for you and your channel! Happy New Year!

Happy 5th anniversary. Melinda your success comes from your love of music first and vinyl records second. I think that is what makes your channel successful; music lover first and foremost. You review pressings which I love and at times I have taken your advice and even tested your advice. I have pressing x, let me buy pressing y and see if I agree with your assessment. I have done this two or three times and value your assessments; you have saved me some grief in what not to waste my time with. I also appreciate that you don't put out a vibe like your infallible; you come across as sincere. I like how you go over the details of your gear; but don't go deep into the details; you don't need to. Agreed, support your favorite vinyl content creator. My favorite channel is "Pieces Of Vinyl". A lot of channels that I have found speak more on Rock, but Rocco Richardson has a abundance of information on great soul, modern soul, funk that I love, and his collection is top notch as well. This is a great community and I believe we learn new things every day from each other.

Hi Melinda - congrats on your 5 years anniversary on utube, keep up the good work. As far as monetizing your channel goes - I dont have a problem with it all, and getting free records from the record companies - I dont have any issues with that either. I mean its great advertising for the record companies who are getting their content reviewed, and seen by thousands upon thousands of people, who like me, watch similar utube channels - AND lets face it, its super cheap advertising for them - and for what, the cost of a record or box set. I struggled with monitization at the start but once I hit 2000 I said screw it, why not. Half my videos I don’t monetize because of the samples I post. For me samples are important so I continue to do that on Sunday. My midweek I don’t. Like you I do this for the comments. I have had the same people for years comment to me, that is my enjoyment, interacting with others. Congrats on the book, how fun. Happy New Year. I had the US Mono of bookends. I still have the vinyl but, sigh, the mono cover is no more.
You have a very special channel and I always enjoy listening in. I have still been around listening while at work and I love your needle drops. I didn't realize you had to demonetize for those videos. That's a shame.

You and your videos as I have always seen them when you get down to it is that you are a genuine person...no bull or build up at all. The videos to me are great...it IS a passion and a love. As for others who we have made friends with in our lives whether it be in the VC or elsewhere it is the common love of in this case records and the music. Music to me is one of the few things I believe most everybody loves to some degree or other.
As for monetizing you channel...that is your choice...if people have an issue with that don't watch them. At the end of our road we each travel on all we ultimately take with us is friendships and family relationships and our mind, heart and soul. I honestly can't see anyone raking you over the coals about anything because of how you present yourself...just being you and being honest.
I have known about YT for a long time and watched once in a great while when a friend mentioned something that was posted on it. And then hell came to us all to some degree or other via Covid...being stuck home and everything shut down...YT I think got a TON of people through it being it's free and theres so much info about anything it seems. I ditched cable TV...best move ever and don't miss it. I love getting on here and seeing the channels I sub to posting great videos about stuff I love and record collecting is one of those things.
You were one of the first channels i discovered and subbed to...cause you are you Melinda and you as far as i am concerned are the real deal...don't change a thing. A HUGE congrats on 5 years and I hope you have many more years showing us all and talking about finds that are good and stuff to avoid.

I don’t always comment on your videos, but I do watch all of them. Your videos are not only informative, but your personality shines through, bringing fun and excitement to your viewers. Regardless of what subject matter you might present on UA-cam (traveling, diet, cosmetics for example), there will always be those sick haters/trolls out there who find enjoyment with insulting others. Ignore them! Block them! You now have almost 30,000 dedicated followers, and I have no doubt in my mind that like myself, they both admire and honor you for your efforts! Though I only found you this past year, I'm glad I did, as your generousness and genuine spirit is apparent with none of that shrill, click-baity narcissism all too ubiquitous around YT and the (anti) social media sphere in gen. I'm more into CD's and never really got into vinyl - I've only owned 8 in my life, but I watch your videos. Good to see people are still into physical media (I'm big on ownership and not renting,) music in general and actual hi-fi!

Hi Melinda. Jealousy is a weird thing. Some people seem to think that one person getting records is somehow away from them. Getting promotional records is only technically different to having vclt. If you can get money through yt, why not take it? Basically it's money that belongs to you, you have worked for it. Personally i haven't even looked into what needs to be done in order to monetize your channel. As far as i'm concerned, anybody wanting or able to do so, go for it.
Mostly i follow your channel because you show recors that interest me and because i like your style.

Your videos have certainly been a part of my vinyl collecting journey, and I can’t be the only one. I think the fact that record companies would send you records to review on your channel, Mofi would invite you out to see how they make their records, etc… just proves that you’re a big part of the vinyl community. As for the haters, they’re just unhappy people trying to spread their negativity and should always be ignored. Lastly, I’m happy to be one of those regular commenters, as you mentioned.
