  • I'll say without reservation, this group is the best fife ensemble that ever played together. The original Veterans Fife Club of McDonagh, McEleney and Douglas expanded to include Bob O'Brien and "Bucky" Buchanan. This arrangement "Gathering of the Clans" and "Yankee Doodle Took A Drink" are unfortunately the only extant recordings of the group.
Going back to my time as a junior in St. Benedict's I had the great fortune to be taught fife by two of these guys; McDonagh and O'Brien. Following that, I was privileged to play with all of them (except Bucky) over the years in various corps' such as the NY Regimentals, The Ancient Mariners, The Blue & Gray and McDonaghs Fife Study Group.

I agree with your statement. I've looked at a book with McDonagh's arrangements, and my eyes get crossed and my fingers start cramping. What incredible musicians!!

Kara Loyal the book only published the arrangements John felt could be played correctly if taught by a qualified fife instructor. the stuff you've never even seen would make you pass out..

For those with good stereo separation, you can hear John McDonagh playing on this recording. His part comes thru on the left channel..it winds up with John playing Devils Dream at somewhere over 150 bpm....single tongued..

I was wondering if you had any access to the music for this piece. I am a fifer and I am very interested in learning this. Thank you
