I fry mine then add the sauce (no water to sauce) to the pan and re-add the fried spam into the heated sauce forming a glaze. I also put spam first then rice and seal. The rice helps the musubi seal.
When I had my first one in the 70s it was just a basic one. Fried spam, rice and nori. To me that combo was magic. When we would go riding dirt bikes we would stop at a small okazuya run by one older lady and buy a pile of them. Perfect for a long day of riding. Now there are an endless ways of making them. Today I still prefer them plain.
I bought one of those little musubi gadgets recently, I haven't used it yet but NOW after seeing your vid, I am going to!! I prefer fried, crispy spam so I'll use your sauce both to simmer and fry it, trying not to burn the sugar sauce. Thanks for this!! Also: I SMASHED! (Greetings from nyc!)
Mine is cooked first and marinated after because Spam still absorbs the sauce after being cooked. I like to avoid burned soy/ sugar where I can, while still having a crunchy texture to the Spam. This is the crowning feature that sets my Spam (that and the ‘Deluxe’ Japanese style scrambled egg) apart from the rest of Hawaii. Try it!
Just make plain rice balls. Some people just fry the spam and mix soy and sugar in the pan to give the sauce that gloss. We add little water to cut the salt.
Aunty, I fry my sliced SPAM. I also use salt water on the mold and my hands on the hot rice to season it. I brush a thickened sauce like you made with a little cornstarch to thicken the sauce.

I always say there's no right or wrong, as long as it works for you, good.
Whats the recipe?

If everyone had an auntie like you, 7-11 would be in trouble.
What a compliment! Thanks.
We googled it and the price of one in L&L in LV is $4.25! In Hawaii is $3.95! RIDICULOUS!

Spam musubi sauce: shoyu, water, mirin, sugar. Simmer spam in sauce for ten minutes.
Yes, exactly.
Sugar ?…
Yes a little.
Will try
🥦I don't eat meat, but I subscribed because you're adorable ❤️
Thanks for subbing. Maybe you can substitute tofu or plant based meat.
@@HawaiisPickleLady🥦 yes, thank you, I will
I have many other recipes that don't have meat and a lot of pickles.
You boil the Spam? 😱
That's one way, there's different ways of doing it. Some people just fry the spam in a skillet and pour over mixed sugar and soy.
No water in my sauce and I really dislike seaweed. Sacrilege! I know!
