  • Maximal Lactate Steady State (MLSS) is the maximal exercise intensity that is sustainable for a prolonged period. Generally, that period is 60min. However, the time will vary depending on the training state and economy of the athlete.

Have to ask. Why 6mmol? Is that specific to you. I thought Lactate turnpoint 2 is 4mmol. Is this different? Many thanks

MLSS purpose is to find your individual lactate threshold. 2mmols and 4mmols are estimations for the general public. 2mmols is close, most are around there. but the 4mmol is large estimation. Some athletes second lactate threshold is upwards of 8mmols. The purpose of this test is to see were you as an individual accumulate lactate. run or cycle 10 min at an intensity right below your estimated lactate threshold. Take blood lactate. Increase power for another 10 min. take test. YOu dont want to increase more than 1mmol in a 10 min block. So if he was at 4.9 he doesnt want to increase by more than 1mmol, or 6mmols. Not sure how long he took after the run, but you would want the reading within 5-10 seconds. especially if you stop exercising. Lactate is used as a fuel source so once you stop exercising lactate levels will build up fast as they are no longer being recycled for cellular respiration. His read 21mmols. theres no way hes running at 21mmols for 20 min. Either its a bad reading or the time from him stopping caused lactate to build up and not clear.

@First Principles Fitness thanks for the detailed reply. I understand a bit now. I have a meter now but 5-10 sec to sample is fast in the outdoors. I will have a go.
