  • Saying goodbye to residency Part 2.
In this final goodbye video, I leave you with 3 nuggets of interpersonal skills that I’ve learned along the way and have found make my job easier.
Tip #1: The patient is the most important person of the day. If you keep your focus on the well-being of the patient, you can almost never go wrong. With this, comes a lot of weight on our first impressions with patients. I think it’s valuable to go the extra effort to make a trusting relationship with your patient so they feel at ease before going off to sleep. Remember, this may be one of the biggest days of their life and we get to play a role in it - it’s a huge privilege.
Tip #2: Know the names of your coworkers, from the preop nurses, to the OR staff, the pacu nurses, your anesthesia techs, and turnover team. First of all, it makes for a much more enjoyable work environment when you know everyone by name and they know you. But more importantly, addressing someone by their name makes for effective communication in times of crisis.
Tip #3: Know when to speak up when something doesn’t seem right in the surgery. In anesthesia, we have the vantage point of seeing the patients entire body at work and have the ability to manipulate multiple organ systems’ physiology. If something appears to be wrong outside of the scope of the surgery, we may be the only ones aware of it and need to speak up in order to resolve the issue. Sometimes this may mean pausing or ending the surgery. That comes with territory of our monitoring and care.
I hope this was helpful for anyone new to medicine, residency, or just curious about what I do for work. Looking forward to talking about topics in critical care in the near future! For now, thanks for all the love and support these past few years. I’m lucky to be surrounded by incredibly supportive people in my life and inspiring leaders in this field of medicine.
