- On trial at Bow Street Magistrates Court for inciting the public to riot, on 24th October 1908 Emmeline Pankhurst made a powerful speech from the dock. While onlookers were moved to tears, the magistrate was unmoved and found Emmeline and her co-defendants guilty. Pankhurst was sentenced to three month imprisonment.

Pick pockets had less of an option of survival than middle class women had of the vote. How dare she regard them as morally beneath her and therefore deserving of more ill treatment in prison, in her speech!
