  • SkycamWV crew had the opportunity to get out to the town of Thurmond, WV this past Sunday. The weather was awesome and we were able to catch some pretty good footage of this old coal town. We hope you enjoy!
Thurmond is a town in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States, on the New River. The population was five at the 2010 census. During the heyday of coal mining in the New River Gorge, Thurmond was a prosperous town with a number of businesses and facilities for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The town was the filming location for John Sayles' 1987 movie Matewan since it still possesses many of the characteristics of a 1920s Appalachian coal town.
Today, much of Thurmond is owned by the National Park Service for the New River Gorge National River. The C&O passenger railway depot in town was renovated in 1995 and now functions as a Park Service visitor center. The entire town is a designated historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

Very well done video, music and narration. Been there in the past helping the NPS with some erosion issues along the River. Walked across the RR bridge, very cool town. Look for Jaw Tooth on You Tube, he has train videos of the downtown as well. The Amtrak Cardinal passes through Thurmond on the way to DC.

I don't think Thurmond is so forgotten these days. It seems to be getting a lot of attention especially from rail enthusiasts, but tourists as well. Amtrak trains still stop there. It's nice to see it's been preserved. I hope the National park's efforts continue. For al the money the US Government fritters away, things such as this are well worth some funding.

Capt. Thurmond actually wanted to name the town Arbuckle after Arbuckle Creek that flows from Minden. The name Arbuckle was rejected because of another town with that name in Mason county. Thurmond’s son submitted Thurmond and it was accepted.

I believe he sent his drone through the bridge. Notice how it heads straight up at the end of the bridge. Also, there is a road on the side of the bridge that you can drive over. I love going to Thurmond. It is truly the place that time forgot. You can sit outside the depot and listen to the water rushing buy, and feel like you are back in the late 1800's. Such a peaceful place. I highly recommend a visit if you can make it.

Yes you can. There are several swimming spots in the area along the river. I grew up near Thurmond and spent alot of time as a kid down on that river. Some of my family was born in Thurmond. My grandfather owned and ran a business for many years in Thurmond. A brother of his was the postmaster there for many years as well. Also if your into fishing , its a good area for that.
