Thanks guys! This video is fantastic! I wrote a short version of the steps on paper and used it to remove and replace the 2 HP motor. If you are hesitating or unsure of being able to do this, review the video 2 - 3 times and get comfortable with the steps. You will save money. I estimated 2 hours and it was just under that. Removing the old motor was fast and disassembling (less than 25 minutes). However, I ran into the wire stripping rework and paced myself to ensure my son and I got it right. I suggest stripping the electrical wires to expose new copper. It made it a lot easier to tighten and secure screws. Many thanks for the video!!!!
Ok so now I know how to replace and rewire a pool pump motor. Item # 600 on the list of things I never thought I would need to know when I bought a house. Perfect video.
My pool guy suggested I replace the motor on my own. This video was so comprehensive and easy to understand that I took the challenge. Thank you for this.
I know this is a video that has been up for awhile. I was left babysitting my sister's pool for the summer, so of course, the pump had to break down on my watch. This video , along with your trouble shooting videos have been a great help. My brother-in-law in Florida and INYO pools videos and I have been on "conference calls". Great Instructions Thanks so much
I had a 1.5 HP pump replaced by a local pool guy with another 1.5 HP pump and it kept overheating. He blamed my plumbing and I didn’t know enough to challenge him on it since this was my first pool. Thanks to you guys, I figured out that my old pump was actually 1.9 “total” HP (because of the 1.3 Service Factor), and now with this video, I replaced my motor myself and I can’t tell you how thrilled I am with it. Thank you!!!
Hi to all at INYO. Thanks for a great video, easy to follow and very informative. Changed my pool motor with no hassle. THANK YOU all again.Happy and cool in Spain.
This was perfect for me when I got to the part about getting the impeller off the shaft - saved me time figuring that out for myself. Excellent video., thanks.
Thanks INYo Pools, you saved us a lot of money watching this video. Our new energy efficient motor is so very quite! Also had the best price on it and the free shipping really helped too. Again Thank You!!
I'm in the process of replacing an old and rusty Century pool pump motor which I inherited with the house I purchased recently. Upon disassembling the pump housing which is a Sta Rite unit, I noticed that the impeller did not have a plastic ring around it as shown in your video. Is this normal, as I ordered a bunch of replacement parts on Amazon for my rebuild, but cannot find a ring for the Pentair C105-236P type impeller.
A lot of questions about capacitors: Shorting out the capacitor is done by placing a load across the terminals/wires of the capacitor. Usually this is done using a screwdriver for an instant discharge. However, for any large capacitor that has a DC voltage applied, the charge could be quite big and it will blow a large chunk of molten metal out of your screwdriver. It can be dangerous. Luckily these motors are AC. AC motors usually have at least a starting capacitor, but may have a run capacitor as well. There shouldn't be any charge on an AC motor capacitor because it flips polarity every cycle, so you shouldn't get any sparking or it will be very minimal. The capacitor is there to reduce the inductive reactance of the motor windings while the AC motor is starting or running. This allows the voltage and current to be closer to being in phase with each other so that all magnetic fields are properly aligned and there are no dead spots in the motor. This reduces the current requirement of the motor and makes it run much smoother and cooler.
Opened up my pool this year and the motor was dead. The earliest anyone could come out to replace it was 7 to 10 days. All I could think of was 10 days of hot, humid weather and what my pool would look like without any circulation. Thanks to your video I replaced the motor myself the next day!
Just watched your video.. This is exactly what I am trying to do. >Thanks for the detailed instructions. Only one thing which I could not follow. I am replacing shaft seal 37400-0027. I wanted to know the orientation of the second part of the shaft seal. Does the metal side of the second part face the white ceramic seal or does the rubber side face the white ceramic seal while loading it on the impeller. Please respond. Thanks.
For most pumps, the white ceramic piece is on the side closest to the motor and the spring loaded side is setting on the impeller. The orientation of the shaft seal is dependant upon your pump model. For example, the Hayward Super Pump shaft seal is installed the way I mention above, but the Pentair WhisperFlo is the opposite. What is the model number of your pump?
Can you use most motors on a hayward Pool system, from other pump companies? I have a Super II pump and wanted to install a AO Smith 1.5Hp 2 speed pump motor.
Just replaced my motor, easy once I had the right tools (needed larger channel locks for impeller). However, mine did not have a bonding wire, is that an older technology?
Hi Tom, attaching the bonding wire is an extremely important step to provide protection from electrical shock in the event of electrical insulation failure. It is usually required by your local electrical code for all metal objects around your pool to be bonded. If you are having trouble finding the bonding lug on your new motor we would suggest having a licensed electrician help you out.
@@Inyopools Thanks, I can find the lug, there just isn't a bonding wire to connect to it. I had the old pump/motor installed by a local pool company when we put in a new heater 10 years or so ago and it's never had one. What does the bonding wire connect to external to the motor?
You'd want to use a silicone or teflon lubricant on the o-rings & gaskets. Magic Lube makes a good product. You don't need to lubricate the shaft seal. You can wet the rubber part with some water to help it slide into place.
I'm trying to replace a Marathon. Is there a reason why it won't just unbolt from the pool pump housing? I unbolted the 4 bolts but it will not separate. Are they designed differently or is there a trick to getting them off?
There may be a clamp or nut assembly that secures the back half of the pump to the front. What is the make and model of the pump side (not the Marathon motor)?
@@jonro3739 The link below will take you to a schematic for the Pentair Superflo. Once you remove the Key 12 bolts, the motor assembly should slide back. Removing the key 19 bolts will not help separate the motor assembly from the front housing. If it is not sliding back easily, try opening the air relief gauge on the filter or removing the pump lid. That will release pressure that may be making it difficult to slide the motor assembly back. www.inyopools.com/pool_parts_pentair_superflo.aspx?Keywords=superflo+parts

Does it have to be HAYWARD? also what about the correct voltage? How am I to know> maybe i should hire you to do it! ALL extra advice is greatly appreciated.
A good thing to add as a final check before replacing the lid at the back of the motor is to be sure that no wires (motor capacitor wire most likely) are anywhere near the motor shaft. I had a motor capacitor wire that slipped out from under the capacitor when replacing it and rubbed against the motor shaft until it shorted out. I've never had that happen before but it's easy to watch out for.
I have a Marathon Electric 1.5 hp motor but I can't seem to be able to get the impellor off. It turns clock wise or counter clock wise it doesn't seem to have any way to loosen it.

you kind of glossed over how to short out the capacitor. I didnt see how you did it, and i dont want to get zapped !
Hold a screwdriver by the insulated handle, and touch the metal blade to both terminals of the cap at the same time.
Hi there. I've been trying to find a good video for a while and this is a quality video. Thanks for taking the time to take the mystery out of this job. While I can't find the right pump on your website at the moment (SP1607Z1M) I will be calling you guys tomorrow. Thanks again!
Step 1) Call pool technician
Step 2) Let him do the job
Step 3) Pay him

This is a pretty bad video. Half the time, what you're doing is out of frame. And you should show how to short out the capacitor.
What an ordeal.
