I used to hunt down the best companions. For fun, I now take them as I find them and then train and equip them for the role I have planned for them.

I’m doing a companions/family members only campaign. My party is 32 strong right now because my wife and brothers wife can’t keep their legs shut and I save scumed to get all boys so they can bring a wife into my party. It hard at first but if you put in the time and effort it’s fucking hilarious to watch 30 companions slaughter an army of 400 elite troops

currently on my first playthrough, so idk when this was added, you can also talk to the barkeep in the taverns and for 2 gold ask for rumors for someone with particular skills and they will say last known location if they have so a bit of tracking down but hey
Another tip is to note their title!

“The wolf” are great fighters….find empire companions for governors because the majority of cities are empire based.
Mods are good for this as well. I use character editor mod to edit them a bit and make them as I like. My engineer looks like my best friend and is designed to his style of play and real life traits, extremely honest and calculating. I made battanian twohanded sword maniac to look like Mel Gibson in Braveheart.
The best companions are the ones that are low level. On a level 10 the start skills almost do not matter as you can build them how you want. Good luck finding a list for levels that is current though. Gotta hire them and let them go until you get one.
Companions despawn and respawn, you can also reroll by hiring companions and then kick them out of the party. They vanish/despawn out of the game and a new companion, of the same category, but different stats will spawn in a town. Hero made some video about it
I haven’t considered that they respawn more when you get rid of one. I’m currently too scared to get rid of some because they basically die when you let them go. Should I stop being a baby and trust in RNGesus?

Sadly overtime certain companions are lost forever , probably they left calradia through Charas port. The most likely is some random thugs killed them when they go Job hunting @_@
Ehm the companions are random the skills are not the name AND culture dictate stats there's I think 3 wanderers. It's the perks thst are random
Do the fighter companions actually have a difference in battle? If so, are they better at leading an army or left on their own in battle?

The Distinguished Service mod is essential to get the most out of your companions.
Companions should be trained into governors or captain leaders IMO. So culture you pick is vital.

Having skills is of course the important part of choosing a companion , but ends up my cruel wife hates my guts for always avoiding raiding and pillaging towns !
I know being Merciful helps in getting good companion to like you , but does a Devious or dishonourable good traits in a companion ?
I wish I could build them up like myself 😅 sometimes it feels like they are just tear 7 solders
Turn off auto allocation of skill points in the campaign options menu, you can choose their perks and what not.
Hard work and they will become better
In the beginning of the game choose the option to chose their perks urslf
I do not remember the exact name of it but it does have that option
Then level them up as you wish
I wish they had a skills list for the PC and one for the NPC like my character isn't governing a settlement give me skills that help me also being able to choose my troops for battle the games fucked me so many times you're outnumbered 4 to 1 here's 40 archers 10 calvary and 1 infantryman good luck
