I dig the history/review combo. Fun idea and really helps remind you of the nostalgia

Final Fantasy was my second RPG after Dragon Warrior, and the first one I ever finished, on the NES in 1991.
I really like the Vancian style of magic this game uses. I think it makes magic feel more like something outside the bounds of what normal people could do, and also encourages and rewards learning your enemies and managing your resources wisely. I do wish that since they were cribbing so much from D&D anyways, they had let your mages swap spells among the ones they had learned.
The best thing about Final Fantasy 1 to me has always been the freedom with which you can approach the game. After the Lich, you can pretty much sequence break most of second half - between that, class choice, and the relatively short length, it makes it the most replayable of the NES FFs in my opinion.

Totally agree! I'm excited to play through FF3 again, I remember that job system made it pretty repayable. But yeah, I clocked in at only 14hrs on this very casual playthrough. Very short and sweet

I'm thinking about buying the first couple of FF on Steam because of the fun retro look. After that maybe buying the newer ones if I like the franchise

I always go with thief, monk, knight, and red mage

So I've seen guides for FInal Fantasy several times, but in the past just thought it was too hard of a game for me to play for myself. I recently bought the Pixel Remaster on my PS5 and I had a blast playing it. I do appreciate the boosts and the ability to turn encounters off. If it didn't have those, I just would not have been able to dedicate that much time to the game just grinding for experience and farming for gil. You are right, it is a bit repetitive and, in my opinion, grindy. But overall, it was a positive experience for me. I am happy I got the platinum for it, as I've experienced the appeal that I couldn't see years ago.

The added boosts are a godsend for these super early RPGs. When I reviewed the game, the console versions weren't put yet, so I just played it vanilla. No Gil boost, no EXP boost, and a very high encounter rate that I couldn't turn on or off. But even with the vanilla version, I still had a total blast with the game! I even went back and fought Warmech and completed the bestiary. Congrats on getting the platinum, man!

Probably a solid 6/10 now if we're being completely honest. Still enjoyable but most of the gameplay isn't really fun anymore. It kinda autoplays itself. Great at the time but undeniably outdated. Still have A lot of nostalgia but we gotta be honest

I played it when it was released on the PS1, and the series have definely improved since then lol. I am not that fond of the first 3 games, even if I pretty much agree with everything you said. I only really recommend this game is someone wants to learn about the evolution of the series. This might be an unpopular opinion but the series did not get amazing until FF6, FF4 and FF5 are great but FF6 was on another level.
I grew up with random encounters but I dont want to see it in any new games. I vastly prefer visible enemies as a design choice. I love how the pixel remasters looks, I never personally liked how the PSP games looked. My favorite version of FF4 is the DS version, mainly because I think it has the best script.

I totally get you! I appreciate the NES titles for what they were, but similarly to the original Dragon Quest games, they serve their best purposes as history lessons. I respect what they do as primitive RPGs, but I wouldn't really recommend them unless you're someone who wants to see the grass roots and see how the series has developed over time.
When I get to FF4, I'll spend a little time talking about the 2D vs 3D versions, but I think I will primarily be reviewing the 3D remake. I've played the PSP version of FF4, but I've never touched the 3D remake, and I'm most interested in the updated script and cinematic approach with the voice acting. Thanks for watching!

@@MrRPGcrazy That's the goal! Hopefully even all the side games and spin-offs! I'm even working on a review right now for the novelization of FF1

Great video, earned a sub from me. The pixel remaster was so disappointing as it’s mostly just a port of the mobile, it’s a disservice to fans to call it a remaster. I recently picked up the GBA version, it’s perfect and in my opinion has the best sprite art, music, and UI of all versions. You are right, FF1 really sticks out because of the music. I share your pain on the encounter rate, it way too high with the backtracking.

I actually really like Final Fantasy 1 in spite of its comparative simplicity. I definitely enjoyed it more than other entries. Nice video.
