  • What are the benefits of attending a trade show as a product developer? Should you attend a trade show? Should you pay to display a prototype at your invention? No. Displaying a prototype of your invention - and not an actual finished product that you are ready to ship - is like asking to get ripped off. Product licensing expert and "One Simple Idea" author Stephen Key discusses trade shows and inventors with entrepreneur, investor, and business advisor Marc Portney.
Make sure to watch Stephen's other interviews with Marc as they debate different go-to-market strategies.

I've been in the invention biz since 1997 specifically the garage door business. You wanna talk about land sharks, holly heck. So my second big thing is the flushmount garage door, let me tell you, everyone and their brother in the business calls me, all looking to pump me for free information, in the beginning I was chewing up days just answering tech questions, finally got sick of it.
So now I look for my own jobs, install my own products, which pays me very well. If someone now wants my technology, they have to buy a dealership from me, it's a very structured contract, then I will sell them parts.
If you don't set boundaries, business people tend to be ruthless, they will use and abuse you, try to pump what ever they can get from you.

If you go to a show, you'd better have at least a provisional patent and you'd better go for a patent because once someone takes a picture and puts it on the internet it may become public domain.

Your PPA is suppose to give you a whole year of protection.....to help you promote the product and test its eventual public response ....while manufacturers scramble to test and find the most efficient methods of fabrication.

If a person makes a prototype, takes a picture and put it in a google image search, and comes up with no match....does google keep a file on that item that did not return any results?

I wouldn't do it. In fact, might want to scramble up your google searches to confuse the AI. Wouldn't be shocked if intimate search patterns might reveal an idea.

@@breatheagain7775 I've modified a product , that could not possibly be modified any further, without violating the IP of the designer...if the wording of the modification is well done.....guaranteed 100%. Just wondering what that would be worth...in terms of potential royalty percentage...

Do we need patents to protect prototypes?

    • @inventRight

Patents are tools that can help you further your business goals. You would use a provisional patent application, for example, to raise money for your startup or secure a licensing agreement.

yeah, that's too bad. I'm sure he's very busy...however, he did say in an earlier inventright video that he would reply with feedback and suggestions but that didn't happen when I sent him an idea, someone else from his company replied with a basic "no thanks," oh well.
