What a tragic story. I am so sad thinking about this ever since hearing about it yesterday. My deepest sympathies to the families, but I HATE even saying that because it's offered randomly and thoughtlessly and automatically tens of thousands of times a day on social media. Let's just say we should use this as water awareness and always use life jackets and always be aware of conditions on the water, especially if you're a novice as I am.
This a tragedy. There were life vests on the boat. They chose not to wear them. I hope the family do not try to go after the company. I’m glad that the family has closure.
It's called " The Law of absolutes" If you can't swim, or can't swim well ( that is me) and don't wear a PFD, and go into deep water you will undoubtedly drown without intervention, and your cell phone wont save you. Not checking weather conditions and knowing what to do to handle a vessel in changing weather is also a bad situation. Anchor lines are NOT commonly "secured" to a vessel, the pilot, or another passenger that is in charge of anchoring should know of secure attachment points for anchors, and also know knots used to fasten the line. I ALWAYS wear a PFD when boating, or even on deep water docks.
The family absolutely should sue the rental company and should win because the company failed to connect the anchor to the boat. The users did all they could to learn how to operate the boat safely. But for the unattached anchor the three may never have gone into the water.
@@americanmeteoritefan9670 If someone on the boat had the common sense to tie the rope on from inside the boat, nobody would have died. If the two men, or at least one would have done the smart thing and drove the boat to the woman, nobody would have died. If they would have worn life vests, nobody would have died. Yet, you place the sole responsibility on the rental company? Many boaters don’t attach the anchor to a fixed position as it gives you the flexibility to tie at different locations to account for wind direction. It’s not uncommon to do that.
I’ve been boating my whole life…my family owned boats…etc. however, I have never of the practice of jumping into the water with an anchor. I recall my dad and brothers dropping the anchor over the side of the boat and with the nicer boat all you had to was press a button. The anchor should have a rope or cable attached and you drop it over the side of the boat….you don’t jump in with it. If it’s not attached, then you tie it or attach the rope or chain to the anchor while you’re sitting on the boat deck. We even had a little anchor for our canoe that was attached to a rope and you just dropped it over the side. This entire event defies logic. I can’t imagine what went on out there.
I lost my 19 year old baby brother in a boating accident that happened in North Florida after an extensive search unfortunately his body was never recovered and that makes closure must more difficult. I am so glad these families found their loved ones and can put them to rest properly. May God be with them at this horribly sad and difficult time.

It sounded like a larger recreational boat, and, anchors are stowed in a compartment and not used often.
