This video has been preserved, from Dr T Noor's archives, by the sitarist Patrick Moutal and all credit really goes to him.
The present performance was part of an event to commemorate 150 years of The Times of India. I can notice Narayan Deshpande on the tanpura, but I do not recognize the other student (Edit: According to an observer, it is Rajendra Rathore). On the tabla, we have the trustworthy Nana Mulye, while on the harmonium, good old Purushottam Walavalkar. Pandit Joshi usually sang this composition, 'Soundhe sugandh', in Shuddha Bahar, but here, it is recast in Shahana Bahar. See the video description for more. 🙏

Pandit ji ke dwara gaayi gayi iss composition ke 2-3 aur versions hain UA-cam par. Woh versions Shuddha Bahar hi lagte hain aur unmein se ek mein Pandit ji khud raga ka yeh naam batate bhi hain. Lekin iss version mein Shahana ka kuchh hissa dikhayi padta hai. Pandit ji ne Shuddha Bahar ki hi composition ko Shahana Bahar mein piroya hai. Aisa unhone aur bhi instances mein kiya hai. Jaise Miyan ki Todi ki bandish 'Eri mai shubh mangal gao' ko Hindolita mein badal kar gaana, ya Asavari Todi ki bandish 'Sab mera wohi' ko Bhairav-Bhatiyar mein badal kar gaana.

Bhimsen in his later years was more akin to Ustad Faiyaz Khan stylistically. Heavy and powerful throw of voice, slower taans with heavy gamaks and VERY melodious. Unlike, the more mercurial Ustad Abdul Karim Khan or young Ustad Amir Khan type.
Well noted. How many different influences he may have had on him is likely a testament to the singers whose jalsas he must have attended in his formative years. If you can seek out the recent YT upload of his ‘Bole re papihara’ by a channel called Kansen Sangit or sth, you may find in his gayaki the phrases of another old timer. Lemme know if you figure that one out ;) Ah. I think even I will relisten to it now ^_^

You may be right actually. I did think that PBJ sounded Gwalior in places. My initial suspicion was that of a Ramakrishnabua Vaze influence. I think he too has sung this same bandish.
Another rendition that comes to mind is Gangubai’s 78 rpm of Miyan Malhar.
@@FarhanAmin1994 Absolutely agreed! I find Bhimsen's singing at times WAYY more identical to Agra and Gwalior rather than Kirana. Rather, Ustad Amir Khan is much closer to pure Kirana, although Bhimsen considered UAK as his spiritual "guru", but we see sparkles of Faiyaz Khan and Omkarnath Thakur more, especially in the 1980s and thereafter.
To all who are saying this is shuddha bahar, you may hear shuddha nishad from 5.55, which is absent in shuddha bahar.

This is Shuddha Bahar
Indeed, the bandish is usually sung by Kiranaites in Shuddha Bahar. There is a 1930s 78 rpm recording of Gangubai of the same and a later 1960s recording of PBJ singing the same as an extended 23 min rendition, where he even stops in between to say 'ह्याला शुद्ध बहार म्हणतात' and demonstrates the subtle difference between regular Bahar and Shuddha Bahar. Here, in 1990, however, not only do we have the announcement by the lady at the start but also, if one notices, he does deploy some Shahana phrases, even veering close to Bageshri, perhaps, on one occasion.
One can also find a lovely lec-dem on raga-specific swarochcharan by Pt K G Ginde where he sings the same bandish but with slightly different words and in regular Bahar. Be fun to see an entirely new perspective on the same song there.
